______Confident Chapter/Lesson: Chapter 7 Lesson 9, 10, 11 Page: 326-330 ______Ok Objective/Title: Convert Fractions, Decimals, and Percents ______Lost Important Terms Quick Solve Decimals: a number that has one or more numbers to the right of a decimal Decimal to %: move decimal point to the right 2 places Percent: ratio of a number to 100 % to Decimal: move decimal point to the left 2 places Fraction to %: write equivalent fraction with denominator of 100. Then write the numerator as the %. a × ? Fraction: a number that names a part of a whole, part of a collection, or part of a region b 100 % to Fraction: put the number over 100. Simplify. n% = n ÷ 100 ÷ Fraction to decimal: divide a b a b Practice Questions Express each decimal as a percent or percent to decimal. Then order from least to greatest in original #’s 1. 17% 0.56 0.18 0.17 56% 18% 17% < 0.18 < 0.56 5. 48% 0.48 2. 250% 2.49 200% 2.50 249% 2.00 200% < 2.49 < 250% 6. 2.38 238% 7. 77% 0.77 3. 18% 0.15 99% 0.18 15% 0.99 0.15 < 18% < 99% 8. 6.01 601% 4. 0.22 0.01 0.83 22% 1% 83% 0.01 < 0.22 < 0.83 9. 37.5% 0.375 10. 6.8 680% Write an equivalent percent or fraction in simplest form. 1. 1 4 6. 80% 25% 2. 2 5 4 5 7. 9 10 40% 90% 3. 8. 75% 50 200 3 4 25% 4. 17 20 9. 145% 85% 29 20 5. 160% 1 9 20 8 5 13 5 10. 2% 1 50 Change all numbers to a decimal or percent. Then order from least to greatest in original #’s 1. 0.65 3 5 3.0 1< 2 3 < 0.65 < 5 5. 3 5 1 2 3.0 0.61 1 < 3 < 0.61 < 2 5 1 2 65% 65% 2. 5 6 80 100 1.2 80 < 100 5 < 6 1.2 < 1.9 6. 7 5 1.9 43% 43% < 7 < 5 1.95 1.95 3. 0.12 1 10 11% 0.20 4. 6 125% 0.95 5 1 < 11% < 0.12 < 0.20 10 7. 1.1 7 10 99% 7 < 99% < 1.1 10 0.95 < 6 < 125% 5 8. 4% 4% 0.05 2 20 < 0.05 < 2 20 Notes and Examples 1. Convert decimals to percents by moving the decimal point to the right exactly 2 places. Then add the % sign *Add zeros if necessary. example: 0.45 0.45. 45% Decimal Percent *Think alphabetically Decimal Percent 2. Convert percents to decimals by moving the decimal point to the left exactly 2 places. Then remove the % sign. **Add zeros if necessary *If you do not see a decimal it falls at the end of the number on the right hand side example: 45 % 045. 0.45 *Groups of Numbers: Change all numbers to either decimals or percents and use original #’s in your answer. (If you choose to change to decimals line up the #’s to compare) 3. Convert fractions to percents by writing an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. Remember to find the number to get from 4 to 100, which is times 25, and multiply by the same number on top. Then convert the equivalent fraction to a percent (the numerator becomes the percent.) × 25 example: 3 4 = 75 = 100 75 100 75% × 25 * If you can't write an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100, then you must divide the fraction to get a decimal. Then convert the decimal to a percent. example: 0.571 0.57 4 (being divided) 7 (dividing into) 0.571 7 4.000 -35 50 -49 10 -7 *Round to decimal to the nearest hundredths place. Then convert the decimal to a percent. 57% 4. Convert percent to fraction by putting the number over 100. ÷ 20 *Remember to take the % sign away! example: 20% 20 100 *Simplify if you can! 20 100 = ÷20 1 5
