Grandma’s Famous Apple Pies
Name:
Date:
My grandma’s neighbour Sue has the loveliest green apple tree. Every year before the Royal Show Sue
brings her 30 of her biggest and juiciest green apples. With those apples grandma has just enough apples to
make 4 delicious apple pies to enter into the show. The best part is she always has two special apples left
over so we can eat them while we wait for the pies to bake. I always watch grandma make the apple pies
every year, but I still don’t know how many apples she uses in each one. She tells me it is a secret when I ask
her. I want to be able to tell mum I can help her bake them at home, but I don’t know how many apples she
uses. Do you think you could help?
Explain your thinking
Extension: This year Sue didn’t have a good yield on her apple tree and they were much smaller than usual.
She told grandma that she would need to use 2 extra apples in her pies this year. She still could only give
grandma 30 apples. How many apple pies could grandma make this year? Would there be any apples left
over to eat? How many more apples would grandma need to make 4 of her famous apple pies?
