University of East Anglia Physical Education and Sport Ziggurat Challenge Inter-School Sport 2014/2015 20 recreational sporting events for all students & staff FREE ENTRY Last Year’s Winners 1st School of Biological Sciences 2nd School of Medicine 3rd School of Education ‘Most Sporting HOS’ Prof Dave Stevens MTH WHAT IS IT? The Ziggurat Challenge is a ‘recreational-level’ programme of events open to all students, alumni, staff and faculty of the University including those based at the Norwich Research Park. The programme has been designed to promote enjoyable participation in the spirit of sporting competition as well as encourage friendly interaction/rivalry between schools. Participants compete for their school of study; those in departments not directly linked to a school may attach themselves to one of their choice or compete for the UEA Staff team for the duration of the programme. (This may vary each year). All schools/depts. will compete against each other in all events. WHO CAN TAKE PART? Any student, alumni, member of staff or faculty, (including Norwich Research Park based staff) can compete in the Ziggurat Challenge. What’s more it’s FREE*!!! You can take part in, or spectate at, every event this year and pay absolutely nothing (*60p entry if not a cardholder). We value your participation more than your money, so no excuses, just turn up and join in. …and no matter how limited you may think your experience of a sport is, you can still give it a go and be in with a chance of winning valuable points for your school. WHAT SPORTS DOES IT INVOLVE? 20 different events including: ~ Fun Run/stroll around the lake, indoor rounders, men’s 5-aside football, women’s netball, table-tennis, basketball, indoor hockey, badminton, climbing all before Christmas, and in Semester 2: swimming, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, wheelchair & IZB basketball, indoor cricket, lacrosse, archery, touch rugby, tug-o-war and athletics. All sports are for teams of both men & women unless specified. SCORING POINTS AND PLAYING THE JOKER? Schools receive points that contribute towards their standing just by getting a team together and taking part. Bonus points are then added based on how well the team performs. The same scoring system applies to all the events except for the last one – Athletics; where the points are doubled. When the Head of your school participates 5 bonus points are added per event. 3 bonus points can be gained when the HOS comes along to spectate. In the event that the HOS is unavailable each school may select ONE ‘nominated other’ who will be awarded 4 points for participating and 2 points for spectating. Schools have 2 jokers to play during the course of the competition, these may be placed on any event (*that has 10 entries or more) Playing the ‘Joker’ will double the Ziggurat points for that event.
