5°C TULIP GREENHOUSE PROGRAM
ESPECIALLY SUITED FOR PRODUCING
“FRENCH STYLE” CUT FLOWER TULIPS
“French Style” Tulips are THE most sought after cut tulip flower. Their flowers are significantly larger than
standard tulip flowers and this enormous tulip flower is carried on exceptionally strong and tall stems.
However, in order to produce these larger plants and flowers the bulbs must be grown under the 5°C
temperature regime, not the more standard 9°C temperature regime.
The basic difference between the two treatment programs is that the entire cold requirement for the 5°C
program is done in the cooler dry (that is, not planted in media, cooling takes place in the storage tray)
whereas the 9°C program the entire cooling is done in the cooler wet (that is, planted into media). The 5°C
bulbs have a shorter cooling requirement, but longer greenhouse time compared to the 9°C bulbs. However,
it is precisely because of this longer greenhouse time that the tulip varieties known as “French Style”
produce such extraordinary flowers and plants.
IN SHORT here are the differences at a glance:
TREATMENT:
9°C Program
Growers give all cooling at
48°F. Cooling is done in rooting
room, bulbs planted OR
growers can split the treatment
and do ½ in the cases in the
cooler (dry) and ½ planted
(wet) still giving the total
number of weeks of cooling per
variety requirement (i.e. 16
wks).
FORCING TIME:
9°C takes fewer weeks in the
GH @ 3 weeks to force.
VARIETIES:
9°C can’t use the French Style
varieties, only standard
varieties.
5°C Program
All cooling is done in cases in
cooler (dry). Fewer weeks in
the cooler, but longer forcing
in the GH. This slower forcing
is due to the fact that the rooting
takes place in the GH, not in the
cooler. This produces better stem
quality due to better root system
and slower Greenhouse growth.
5°C takes longer to force in the
GH @ 10-12 weeks but produces
Better stems.
5°C can use the French Style
varieties which produce heavier
stems and larger flowers.
Standard varieties will also do
better with the 5°C program.
All treatment for the 5°C Cut Tulip Program is done in our state of the art
treatment facilities. Bulbs are shipped to the grower ready to plant upon arrival.

NOTE: For the planting weeks of October 17 through November 14 it is especially
important that the soil temperature remain below 55 degrees F. during the first three
weeks of growth. Planting in trays at this time tends to give superior results.

Brasbonitas® Amaryllis Cultivation Techniques
Receipt of bulbs
Carefully check the bulbs when they arrive. The bulbs have to be dry. The root system should not be allowed to dry too much if you
want to guarantee the bulbs will develop good new roots. It is advisable to allow the bulbs to acclimatize for 4-7 days in an area
kept at temperatures of 77°F to 86°F (25°C to 30°C) and at a humidity of at least 80%. Avoid temperatures over 86°F (30°C).
If the bulbs are not immediately potted upon arrival, they should be kept at a temperature of 41°F (5°C) to reduce the chance of
excessive sprouting.
Potting
The bulbs require a porous potting mixture with a PH value of 5.8 to 7.5. Do not use bark and fresh compost. Use clean pots with
drainage holes. Plant the bulbs in the pot with the tip of the bulb sticking about 1/3 above the soil. Tamp down the potting mixture
to make sure the bulb sits firmly in the pot.
Watering
Water the bulbs well after they have been potted and do not allow the potting mixture to dry out. However, over watering
must be avoided as well.
Greenhouse temperature
Keep the pots, containing the bulbs, in a greenhouse at a temperature of 72°F - 86°F (22°C - 20°C) day and night and ensure
there is some ventilation. To achieve the best possible result, it is important to keep the temperatures constant. Make sure
the temperature does not drop below 72°F (22°C) and does not go over 86°F (30°C). Water the bulbs only moderately.
Estimated forcing time is 17-35 days to reach the sales stage, depending on the variety and temperature.
