Dental Hygiene Graduate Programs SIG Met in Portland, Oregon – June 10,2013
Meetings/Programs
2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition – The SIG had a program proposal accepted.
The program was titled “Graduate Education Thesis vs. Non-thesis Scholarly Activity:
Moving the Profession Forward”
Volunteer panelists: Michelle Darby (ODU),(Unable to attend – her presentation was
delivered by JoAnn) Nancy William (UTM) and JoAnn Gurenlian (Idaho State)
Panel Moderator: Shannon Mitchell (UNC)
Abbreviated Session Abstract: With new dental hygiene master programs opening in a
variety of formats, online or onsite, and candid discussions concerning scholarly
activities in these programs, the purpose of this panel discussion is to present a variety
of scholarly activities and provide examples of each. Scholarly activity such as
thesis/research projects have been considered the traditional format for master of
science programs, however other activities such as capstone projects, documented case
studies, book chapters and others are considered forms of scholarship. Getting these
projects to publication or to present at national meetings is extremely important for
developing the profession, but can be daunting. The session will include a panel
discussion and workshop for graduate students, dental and dental hygiene faculty who
are currently mentoring graduate students or see themselves in that role at their
institution

The group would like to see a section formed and newsletter done as well as the
ADEA centralized application service was discussed.
New business:
1. Possibly forming a ADEA web portal for the sig to facilitate communication
between different grad programs. This site to have information of online courses
that students could take through different programs, have faculty expertise area
for research calibrations, list possible funding areas for students, list possible
stats services available to students, etc.
2. The group discussed with ADEA leaders what options could be looked into for
the state authorization of online education excess.
