T here will be great basketball played this weekend with the Semifinal match-ups at fine venues throughout the state of Georgia. With the addition of another classification, there was a need to separate the semifinal games from the championships games. This is the final hurdle for getting to the championship game. The players and coaches have worked hard all year to get to this point in the season. Many of you have supported these teams in various ways this season, and that is an important part of the success of these teams. The GHSA hopes you will enjoy your experience at these games, and that you will demonstrate the highest levels of sportsmanship as you cheer on your team in a positive way. Find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/OfficialGHSA The GHSA is grateful for the great venues in which these games are played, and we want to thank the administrators for working to make these games special. The GHSA began honoring girls champions in 1945, but only 12 times in the history of GHSA basketball has a school captured both the boys and the girls titles in the same year. TREND-SETTERS ... Jeff Davis was the first school to pull off the feat, winning the Class AA titles in 1958. Roopville pulled off the feat the next year in Class C, but it was four more years until Hart County claimed both AA titles. Greater Atlanta Christian won both the boys and girls Class C titles in 1972, but it would be another 15 years before Clinch County swept the Class A titles in 1987. In 2006, Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy ended the double drought by scor- ing both Class A crowns. Wesleyan took both Class AA titles in 2008, then accomplished the feat again in 2010. Wesleyan is one of just two schools to sweep both titles twice, with Columbia being the other program. Columbia also won the 2010 boys and girls Class AAA titles. Norcross pulled off the double two years ago in Class AAAAAA as Angie Hembree and Jesse McMillan piloted their teams to a pair of titles and, last year, both Columbia and Miller Grove swept the Class AAA and AAAA titles, respectively. Entering this year’s quarterfinal round, 18 schools still had both programs alive and competing for basketball titles. The GHSA’s reclassification to six classes and the decision to split Class A into a private bracket and a public bracket have helped inflate this year’s number, but the 18 schools with both teams still eligible also shows how some schools are focusing in on basketball in a footballcrazy state. While many sports fans across the country will remark how dominant a breeding ground for football players the Peach State has become, just as many basketball standouts head to colleges across the country to play at the next level. Georgia has rich traditional basketball powers and, this year, both teams at many of those powers have their sights set on state titles. PROMISING CANDIDATES ... Norcross is angling to become the third program to pull off the sweep twice. The boys have won four state titles since 2006 including in 2011 when the girls won as well. McMillan was an assistant for three titles, but won his first as a head coach two years ago and knows that sometimes in-house competition is the best form of motivation “We have one of the finest coaches in the state in Angie Hembree,” said McMillan. “Watching her prepare her teams and the attention to detail she brings to practices and games has taught us a lot.” McMillan loves the passion that both teams show for each other and while the competition is there between the programs, it is a healthy competition with a common goal. “We definitely want to keep pace with The Jostens Championship Ring. You don’t win one—you earn it. For further information contact your Jostens representative: Joe Mercer 229-435-1809 Pete Wilson 706-226-4446 Scott Jernigan 229-435-1809 Jason Wiley 706-868-0515 Jake Kellerhals 706-858-5573 Chris Baker 229-435-1809 w w w . g h s a . n e t each other and it is not a secret that championships are our goal,” said McMillan. “In the past, we might not have had as big of a crowd for the girls games, but now (since Hembree arrived) the stands are packed and everybody loves watching our varsity girls. Both teams expect to win and both teams feed off each other’s successes.” Last year Miller Grove took home both titles as Sharman White’s boys team won its fourth straight title, but Renee Breedlove’s girls won their first. Breedlove’s team is in a prime position to capture another after losing just one senior from the team. Miller Grove’s boys team reloaded after losing eight seniors, but looks to be on track to take home a fifth title and perhaps the distinction of yet another sweep. Finally, Columbia could become the first school in GHSA to pull off the sweep for a third time. Columbia’s girls fell in the AAA semifinals to eventual-champion Washington County in 2011, otherwise this year would be an attempt at sweeping the titles for a fourthstraight year. The girls are led by Miah Spencer and Yaktavia Hickson, while the boys are after their own four-peat on the back of point guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen. Proctor can be reached at [email protected]. Great Basketball Action! 8 | GHSA semiFINALS MARCH TO MACON Class AAAAAA class aaaaa Girls Girls North Gwinnett returns to the semifinals again after getting there last year for the first time since 1963. The Bulldogs will rely on a stiff defense, which has not allowed more than 53 points all season, and seniors Lexie Brown and Peyton Whitted. Brown averages more than 18 points per game along with five steals and seven assists, while Whitted drops almost 14 points per game. North Cobb traveled to Tifton and left with an easy 5530 quarterfinals win in which sophomore Kyrie’ Chandler scored 10 of her team-leading 6 points in the fourth quarter. The Warriors are looking for their first state championship. Region 3-winner Langston Hughes comes in having not lost since late December. Ten Panthers average more than three points per game while leading scorer Tia Jones scores just 10. Norcross returns to the finals after a one-year absence after winning the 2010 and 2011 titles. The Blue Devils are paced by all-everything senior guard Diamond DeShields, who was recent named the Naismith Girls High School Player of the Year. DeShields had 28 points in the quarterfinal win over Cherokee while Shayla Coper, a Georgetown commitment, led Norcross with 34. Miller Grove will look to repeat as champions, this time in Class AAAAA. The Wolverines are led by senior guard Katie Hunt, who scored nine fourth-quarter points in the quarterfinal win over DeKalb-neighbor Tucker. Senior guard Tashi Thompson, a three-point specialist, leads the team with 13.2 points per game while Klarissa Weaver and Hunt are both around the 10-point mark. Effingham County rolls into Kennesaw after a 59-53 quarterfinals win in which Kyesha Lewis scored a game-high 23. The sophomore forward leads the Rebels by averaging almost 13 points and eight boards. Southwest DeKalb is looking to win the state title for the first time since the Panthers won three straight from 2008-2010. Coach Kathleen Walton’s team beat Stephenson in the semifinals, avenging a regular season loss. Southwest DeKalb has been hot of late, winning seven in a row including the Region 6-AAAAA tournament. Forest Park will take on SWD in a battle of Panthers and will look for a different result than the 65-33 loss it was dealt by SWD in January. Junior guard Kayla Potts leads the maroon and gold Panthers with an 11.6-point average and had 17 in the quarterfinal win over Hardaway, which came in overtime. BOYS BOYS Coach Jesse McMillan’s team is back. His Norcross Blue Devils won the 2011 state title with an upset of Milton and won three straight state titles from 2006-2008. This year’s edition has not lost since a Jan. 15 defeat by Mill Creek. Seniors Brandon Goodwin and Terrance O’Donohue lead a deep Blue Devils squad. Fresh off a trip to Tifton, the North Cobb Warriors enter the semis on a high. An upset of No. 1 Tift County shocked many around the state, especially after the Warriors trailed by seven entering the final period. Senior trio Lee Moore, Jordan Neff and Jon Beausejour combined for 61 points in the quarterfinal win. On the other side of the bracket, Hillgrove enters the semifinals for the first time in program history. The Hawks have quietly advanced to this weekend after having a sensational season in which coach Ed Morris’ team won 27 games. In the quarterfinals, juniors Kyle Castline (18) and B.J. Brown (16) led the Hawks. A third Cobb County team, Wheeler, completes the final four. Like Norcross, the Wildcats are a perennial-power having won state titles in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2009 and appearing in nine semifinals appearances in coach Doug Lipscomb’s tenure. Coach Sharman White’s Miller Grove program is no stranger to the semifinals. The Wolverines have won four straight state titles and are favored to do it again. Seniors Kyre’ Hamer and Earl Bryant team up with freshman point guard Alterique Gibson and junior Keith Pinckney to make up most of Miller Grove’s production. Opposing the Wolverines in the nightcap is Northside-Columbus, which advanced to the semis after a buzzer-beating three-pointer by senior Jeremy Floyd. The Region 1-champions edged Jenkins Wednesday and Richmond Hill in another tight one last weekend. Region 3-champion Effingham County plays Gainesville, the Region 8 champ, in the first semifinal in AAAAA. Effingham County has dominated opponents thus far in the tournament, winning three games by an average of just under 29 points. Junior power forward JaKeenan Gant leads the Rebels in scoring at 18 points per game. Gainesville has won two state titles in school history, in 1983 and 1984.
