a word from the
executive director
semifinals schedule
girls
Hello, GHSA Basketball Fans!
T
here will be great basketball played this
weekend with the Semifinal match-ups at
fine venues throughout the state of Georgia.
With the addition of another classification, there
was a need to separate the semifinal games from
the championships games. This is the final hurdle for getting to the championship game.
The players and coaches have worked
hard all year to get to this point in the season.
Many of you have supported these teams in
various ways this season, and that is an important part of the success of these teams. The
GHSA hopes you will enjoy your experience
at these games, and that you will demonstrate
the highest levels of sportsmanship as you
cheer on your team in a positive way.

The GHSA is grateful for the great venues in which these games are played, and we
want to thank the administrators for working to make these games special. The GHSA
wants to thank the large number of volunteer
workers who serve at these games to make
them flow smoothly. Finally, we also want to
thank our corporate partners and preferred
vendors who enable the GHSA to produce
these post-season events.

Sweeping boys, girls titles a rare feat
By Fletcher Proctor
T
he GHSA has been awarding basketball
titles to member schools since Lanier won
the first boys title in 1922. The GHSA began
honoring girls champions in 1945, but only 12
times in the history of GHSA basketball has
a school captured both the boys and the girls
titles in the same year.
TREND-SETTERS ...
Jeff Davis was the first school to pull off
the feat, winning the Class AA titles in 1958.
Roopville pulled off the feat the next year in
Class C, but it was four more years until Hart
County claimed both AA titles. Greater Atlanta Christian won both the boys and girls Class
C titles in 1972, but it would be another 15
years before Clinch County swept the Class A
titles in 1987.
In 2006, Southwest Atlanta Christian
Academy ended the double drought by scor-
ing both Class A crowns. Wesleyan took both
Class AA titles in 2008, then accomplished
the feat again in 2010. Wesleyan is one of just
two schools to sweep both titles twice, with
Columbia being the other program. Columbia
also won the 2010 boys and girls Class AAA
titles. Norcross pulled off the double two
years ago in Class AAAAAA as Angie Hembree and Jesse McMillan piloted their teams
to a pair of titles and, last year, both Columbia
and Miller Grove swept the Class AAA and
AAAA titles, respectively.
Entering this year’s quarterfinal round,
18 schools still had both programs alive and
competing for basketball titles. The GHSA’s
reclassification to six classes and the decision
to split Class A into a private bracket and a
public bracket have helped inflate this year’s
number, but the 18 schools with both teams
still eligible also shows how some schools
are focusing in on basketball in a footballcrazy state. While many sports fans across the
country will remark how dominant a breeding
ground for football players the Peach State
has become, just as many basketball standouts
head to colleges across the country to play at
the next level. Georgia has rich traditional
basketball powers and, this year, both teams
at many of those powers have their sights set
on state titles.
PROMISING CANDIDATES ...
Norcross is angling to become the third
program to pull off the sweep twice. The boys
have won four state titles since 2006 including in 2011 when the girls won as well. McMillan was an assistant for three titles, but
won his first as a head coach two years ago
and knows that sometimes in-house competition is the best form of motivation
“We have one of the finest coaches in
the state in Angie Hembree,” said McMillan.
“Watching her prepare her teams and the attention to detail she brings to practices and
games has taught us a lot.”
McMillan loves the passion that both
teams show for each other and while the competition is there between the programs, it is a
healthy competition with a common goal.
“We definitely want to keep pace with
The Jostens Championship Ring.
You don’t win one—you earn it.

each other and it is not a secret that championships are our goal,” said McMillan. “In the
past, we might not have had as big of a crowd
for the girls games, but now (since Hembree
arrived) the stands are packed and everybody
loves watching our varsity girls. Both teams
expect to win and both teams feed off each
other’s successes.”
Last year Miller Grove took home both
titles as Sharman White’s boys team won its
fourth straight title, but Renee Breedlove’s
girls won their first. Breedlove’s team is in
a prime position to capture another after
losing just one senior from the team. Miller
Grove’s boys team reloaded after losing
eight seniors, but looks to be on track to
take home a fifth title and perhaps the distinction of yet another sweep.
Finally, Columbia could become the first
school in GHSA to pull off the sweep for a
third time. Columbia’s girls fell in the AAA
semifinals to eventual-champion Washington
County in 2011, otherwise this year would be
an attempt at sweeping the titles for a fourthstraight year. The girls are led by Miah Spencer and Yaktavia Hickson, while the boys are
after their own four-peat on the back of point
guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen.

North Gwinnett returns to the semifinals again after getting there last year for the first time since 1963. The
Bulldogs will rely on a stiff defense, which has not allowed more than 53 points all season, and seniors Lexie
Brown and Peyton Whitted. Brown averages more than 18 points per game along with five steals and seven
assists, while Whitted drops almost 14 points per game. North Cobb traveled to Tifton and left with an easy 5530 quarterfinals win in which sophomore Kyrie’ Chandler scored 10 of her team-leading 6 points in the fourth
quarter. The Warriors are looking for their first state championship. Region 3-winner Langston Hughes comes
in having not lost since late December. Ten Panthers average more than three points per game while leading
scorer Tia Jones scores just 10. Norcross returns to the finals after a one-year absence after winning the 2010
and 2011 titles. The Blue Devils are paced by all-everything senior guard Diamond DeShields, who was recent
named the Naismith Girls High School Player of the Year. DeShields had 28 points in the quarterfinal win over
Cherokee while Shayla Coper, a Georgetown commitment, led Norcross with 34.
Miller Grove will look to repeat as champions, this time in Class AAAAA. The Wolverines are led by senior guard
Katie Hunt, who scored nine fourth-quarter points in the quarterfinal win over DeKalb-neighbor Tucker. Senior
guard Tashi Thompson, a three-point specialist, leads the team with 13.2 points per game while Klarissa Weaver
and Hunt are both around the 10-point mark. Effingham County rolls into Kennesaw after a 59-53 quarterfinals
win in which Kyesha Lewis scored a game-high 23. The sophomore forward leads the Rebels by averaging
almost 13 points and eight boards. Southwest DeKalb is looking to win the state title for the first time since the
Panthers won three straight from 2008-2010. Coach Kathleen Walton’s team beat Stephenson in the semifinals,
avenging a regular season loss. Southwest DeKalb has been hot of late, winning seven in a row including the
Region 6-AAAAA tournament. Forest Park will take on SWD in a battle of Panthers and will look for a different
result than the 65-33 loss it was dealt by SWD in January. Junior guard Kayla Potts leads the maroon and gold
Panthers with an 11.6-point average and had 17 in the quarterfinal win over Hardaway, which came in overtime.

Coach Jesse McMillan’s team is back. His Norcross Blue Devils won the 2011 state title with an upset of
Milton and won three straight state titles from 2006-2008. This year’s edition has not lost since a Jan. 15
defeat by Mill Creek. Seniors Brandon Goodwin and Terrance O’Donohue lead a deep Blue Devils squad.
Fresh off a trip to Tifton, the North Cobb Warriors enter the semis on a high. An upset of No. 1 Tift County
shocked many around the state, especially after the Warriors trailed by seven entering the final period.
Senior trio Lee Moore, Jordan Neff and Jon Beausejour combined for 61 points in the quarterfinal win. On
the other side of the bracket, Hillgrove enters the semifinals for the first time in program history. The Hawks
have quietly advanced to this weekend after having a sensational season in which coach Ed Morris’ team
won 27 games. In the quarterfinals, juniors Kyle Castline (18) and B.J. Brown (16) led the Hawks. A third
Cobb County team, Wheeler, completes the final four. Like Norcross, the Wildcats are a perennial-power
having won state titles in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2009 and appearing in nine semifinals appearances in
coach Doug Lipscomb’s tenure.
Coach Sharman White’s Miller Grove program is no stranger to the semifinals. The Wolverines have won
four straight state titles and are favored to do it again. Seniors Kyre’ Hamer and Earl Bryant team up with
freshman point guard Alterique Gibson and junior Keith Pinckney to make up most of Miller Grove’s production. Opposing the Wolverines in the nightcap is Northside-Columbus, which advanced to the semis after a
buzzer-beating three-pointer by senior Jeremy Floyd. The Region 1-champions edged Jenkins Wednesday
and Richmond Hill in another tight one last weekend. Region 3-champion Effingham County plays Gainesville, the Region 8 champ, in the first semifinal in AAAAA. Effingham County has dominated opponents thus
far in the tournament, winning three games by an average of just under 29 points. Junior power forward
JaKeenan Gant leads the Rebels in scoring at 18 points per game. Gainesville has won two state titles in
school history, in 1983 and 1984. Senior Shaquan Cantrell is the Red Elephants’ star, averaging just under
20 points, while football sensation Deshaun Watson scores 12 per game. However, it was Jikeese Ruff who
knocked down two free throws to beat New Manchester in the quarterfinal.

Girls
Class AAAA features three No. 1 seeds and fourth-seeded Sandy Creek which makes its first-ever final four
appearance. Sandy Creek was in a tussle with Redan in the quarterfinals, but outscored the Raiders 23-8
in the third quarter and grabbed the 50-47 road win. The Patriots are capable of making scoring runs and
winning close games, but Mary Persons will aim to outpace Sandy Creek with its own explosive offense.
Mary Persons showcased their firepower in the quarterfinals when it led Woodland-Henry just 31-26 at the
half, but scored 44 in the second half to win 75-60. Jonesboro and Columbia is the backend of the double
header. Columbia has dominated during its playoff run never winning by fewer than 14 points (61-47 over
LaGrange) and crushed top-seeded River Ridge 68-27 in the quarterfinals. Columbia forward Yaktavia
Hickson scored 25 and guard Miah Spencer had 17 for Columbia. Jonesboro edged Howard 51-39 in the
quarterfinals behind a 16-point game from Senior Briana Benson and a big 12-point, nine rebound game
from sophomore Michaelle Smith.
St. Pius X enters the semifinals looking for the program’s first state title since 2007. Sophomore Asia Durr
leads the team with 20.4 points per game, while junior Jasmine Carter is connecting on 49 percent of her
field goal attempts. As a team, the Golden Lions have averaged 12.7 steals per game. Chapel Hill will offer
some stiff competition as three seniors are averaging more than 12 points per game. Ashley Chestnut is
the team’s leading scorer at 12.8 points per game. In the other game, Southwest-Macon will face Dawson
County. The Tigers of Dawson County put the clamps down on Decatur in the second half of a 52-47 quarterfinal victory. Senior Carly Gilreath leads the attack with 15.7 points per game while Sheyenne Seabolt
collects the most rebounds per game. Dawson County is the lone team remaining that did not win its region.
Southwest-Macon offers a balanced attack with SheKenya Peters, Jazmine Burgan and Jasmine Askew all
a threat to notch double-digit points. Emily Pennimon grabbed 19 rebounds in the quarterfinal win over
Washington County. Willie Goolsby’s team is 22-5, its best record since the 2007-08 season when the team
advanced to the Sweet 16.

Region 3-AAAA-champion Statesboro and red-hot Columbia face off in the the opening semifinal. Columbia
is led by point guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen who can distribute the basketball and erupt at any moment. The
Auburn signee comes into the Final Four averaging 26 points per game. Kyle Wallace, Maurice Rivers and
Kiair Crouch all consistently score double figures. In Statesboro’s 60-58 win over Rutland in the quarterfinals, junior Zaquazian Smith sunk the game-winning layup as time expired. Smith averages right around 15
points per game. Region 4-AAAA-champion Eagle’s Landing plays Region 6-AAAA-champion South Atlanta
in the second semifinal. Eagle’s Landing has won 17 games in a row and is headlined by Trevin Joseph and
Desmond Ringer. In the quarterfinals, Joseph had 25 points and the 6-foot-10 Ringer had 17 points. South
Atlanta has plenty of size as well and will line up 6-foot-7 Kertiss Baisden and 6-foot-8 Sylvester Bacon
down low and have talented guards that can keep pace with the explosive Golden Eagles’ offense. In the
Hornets’ 78-68 quarterfinals win over Alexander, junior guard Costa Anderson had 21 and senior guard
Naquavious King had 20 points.
North Hall is back in the semifinals for the first time since 2010. Ebo Smith leads a talented senior class
that includes Adam Kelly, Zach Tibbs, Griffin Olson and Taylor Ryder. Smith scored 26 in the quarterfinals
against St. Pius X after notching 24 against Morgan County. The Johnson Atom Smashers are led by senior
Tim Quarterman, an LSU signee who can score at will against any competition. He led all scorers with 28
points against Carver-Columbus in the second round and added 20 against Tattnall County. After making the
state finals one year ago, Savannah is thirsty for its second straight finals appearance and its first title in 15
years. After defeating Washington County, Savannah has now won 11 straight games thanks to junior Jamal
Norman (41 points over the past two games), but will have to try for 12 straight possibly without star Chris
Cokley, who left the quarterfinal game after being knocked unconscious. Allen Whitehart’s Buford Wolves
are trying to get back to the state finals for the first time since a berth in the Class AA finals in 2011. Three
seniors pace the Wolves as Isaiah Williams, A.J. Davis (32 points against Gordon Central) and Kyle Doyle
(46 points in three playoff games) are at the front of the attack.

Class AA lacks the Cinderella stories, but makes up for it with top-seeded powerhouses that arrive red hot
for the state semifinals. All four teams are one seeds that claimed double-digit victories in the quarterfinals.
The first of the two matchups is Laney against Kendrick. Laney senior Simone Smith is a 6-foot-2 power
forward and scoring machine. In the quarterfinals, she scored 12 points in the first half to give Laney a
comfortable 32-19 cushion in a 59-40 win over Pelham. As undefeated Laney looks to complete a perfect
season, the Wildcats will have to do it against Kendrick which also reached the semis undefeated. In the
quarterfinals Kendrick trailed by two points to Lovett at the half, but leadership took over in the second half
and the Cherokees scored a 53-43 win. In the other matchup, Thomasville takes on Wesleyan. Thomasville
is led by senior forward Bree Brown, who averages a double-double and scored 23 of her team’s 47 points
in its 47-41 win over Westside. Wesleyan standout Katie Frerking notched 26 points, five rebounds, six
steals and four blocks in the 66-49 quarterfinals win over Calhoun.
The semifinals consist of No. 3 overall seed St. Francis facing off with No. 2 Calvary Day in the early slot.
St. Francis is an aggressive, pressing team that averages 11 steals per game. Senior Nettie Brown and
sophomore Abby Grant average more than 13 points per game, while guard Candice Williams averages 12
points and five assists. Calvary Day has consistent scorers, but also boasts one of the most dangerous scorers in the state. Senior Alexus Parker, a Prairie View A&M-signee, averages 22.6 points and is coming off a
season-high 38 points in the quarterfinal win. No. 4 Southwest Atlanta Christian plays No. 1 Holy Innocents’
in the late game. Holy Innocents’ has one of the most talented centers in the state in freshman Erika Cassell,
who averages a double-double each game. The Golden Bears went to the foul line 25 times in their 58-43
quarterfinals win. Southwest Atlanta Christian’s offense is a high-powered machine that flew to a 41-9
halftime lead in the quarterfinals. Junior guard Marquita Daniels is coming off a 27-point outing and averages more than 12 per game. Center Alexis Carter tallied 11 blocks and 10 rebounds in the quarterfinals.

Bleckley County arrives in the semis off two consecutive emotional wins, including a 62-61 win over Westside in the second round, and a 69-67 win over Vidalia in the quarterfinals. Bleckley County’s Rydealous
Taylor scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half of the quarterfinals win over Vidalia. Senior teammates
Damario Beck (18) and Ken Hughes (15) also helped the Royals erase a 12-point Vidalia lead. Region
5-champion Jordan has been unstoppable in the postseason, winning by an average of 25.6 points per
game. Jamar Sheppard had 18 points in the 84-63 quarterfinals win over Model. Jordan is a small, but
talented team that will play the 6-foot-1 Sheppard and 6-foot-2 Cyrus Smith down low. Defending AA state
champion Laney will face region 6-AA-champ Greater Atlanta Christian in the backend of the double header.
In the quarterfinals, Laney sophomores Jervon Walker had 18 points and Jashawn Brooks had 15, while
freshmen guard Zephaniah Jasper added 14. GAC has won 16 in a row and its closest contest in the state
tournament was a 77-52 win over Manchester in the quarterfinals. Junior Isaiah Wilkins scored 21 points
in the quarterfinals with teammates Collin Swinton scoring 19 and Troy Morrison 15.
Aquinas boasts a pair of talented junior playmakers in junior Ahmed Hill (54 points in two playoff games)
and Michael Scott (17 points against Excel Christian in the second round). St. Francis does a nice job
spreading the ball around on offense as four players scored in double figures in the Round 1 win against
Pace Academy. Kaiser Gates and Kobi Simmons lead the team, but Jordan Jones is a double-double candidate as is Malik Beasley. North Cobb Christian averages nearly 70 points per game while surrendering 46
points per game. Greenforest Christian is led by UAB-commit Tosin Mehinti, who scored 14 points, grabbed
14 rebounds and blocked six shots in a quarterfinal victory over Calvary Day. Senior Ugo Celestine has
averaged 13 points in two playoff games this season. After losing in the finals to Whitefield Academy last
season, Athens Christian is back looking to finish off a state title run. Athens Christian starts five sophomores, led by Turtle Jackson (25 points and seven assists per game) and Demetrius McWhorter (20 points
and 12 rebounds per game). Jackson scored 41 points in the quarterfinal victory over North Cobb Christian,
including 22 in the fourth quarter to help Athens Christian rally back from 21.

The Randolph-Clay Red Devils bring an 18-game winning streak and a 28-2 record into the semifinals
against Wilkinson County. Head coach Jennifer Acree has two pairs of sisters that bring seem to push each
other to being better each game. Kobi Thornton was the second-leading scorer with 14.2 points per game
and scored 21 in the quarterfinal win over Mitchell County. Brianna Thornton scored 12 points and had 10
rebounds. Whenika Washington scored 16 points and her sister Kaneika notched 10, nearly five below her
average. Adriana Blackmon is the point guard that runs the show. Wilkinson County is paced by a pair of
juniors in Lyric Jordan and Ngozi Ware, who each average more than 10 points per game for coach Jenean
Cooper-Bolston. Samford-signee Kassidy Blevins scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help Gordon Lee to the program’s first semifinal appearance. Blevins has teamed with fellow senior Katie Barger
all season to lead Gordon Lee to a 23-7 record. The Lady Trojans will face Towns County, a team they defeated 70-69 earlier this season. Towns County edged Claxton in the quarterfinals and is led by sophomore
Stephanie Patton.
BOYS
Jenkins County will enter the semifinals on a roll, having held Seminole County scoreless over the final four
minutes of an exciting quarterfinal game that saw Justin Ellis notch 20 points. Jenkins County starts four
seniors in its lineup. Trentin Drayton, the lone non-senior starter, is playing with a torn ACL. This is Jenkins
County’s first trip to the semifinals. Wilkinson County, meanwhile, is looking for another state title after capturing the 2011 Class A title. Torrico Simmons scored 24 points in Wilkinson County’s quarterfinal victory
over Randolph-Clay. Portal is paced by Stacey Morgan, who is filling up the basket at more than 23 points
per game. Cory Reese and Robert Lee also offer double digits each game as Portal is averaging more than
64 points per game. The defense has been stellar this season as the team takes away roughly nine steals
per game with Lee and Shawn Hagins leading the attack. Wilcox County is led by a pair super athletes that
stood out for the football team prior to transitioning to the hardwood. Makail Grace and Johnathan Howard
each average double-digit points with Howard putting up nearly 20 points per game. Junior Calvin Rawls
averages a little more than 10 points per game this year.
