Biosphere Reserve trophies
2014
Encouraging commitment to biodiversity
and sustainable development
Why opt for trophies ?
The trophies are awarded as part of a competition for original ideas from the biosphere Reserve
stakeholders, promoting the sustainable management of natural resources, the combat against
climatic change and sustainable development generally.
The trophies participate in identifying the key players in each biosphere Reserve and promoting their
action. They create the opportunity to commit to setting up exchanges and partnerships in order to
promote the organization of networks. From there, a close collaboration between these players and
the biosphere reserves generally develops..
The promotion of this team approach, on and beyond the local level (on a national, and also on an
international scale if Euromab adopts the idea…) will encourage those involved. The trophies also
result in the mobilization of the network of institutional and private reserve partners, by providing a
positive and concrete approach. The trophies are awarded during a media event..

How do the trophies work?
In 2014, the biosphere Reserves of France will organize their first trophies together. Each reserve will
set up the trophies on its own territory, following the same rules.
The trophies will be awarded as part of a competition destined to provide financial support for those
responsible for particularly innovative and original exemplary projects in each biosphere reserve. The
joint specifications define:
the starting dates (February 2014) and the date of awards for the winners in each biosphere
Reserve (June),
the regulations and a common framework for making up the juries,
selection criteria.
The themes of the competition, in the general domain of biodiversity and sustainable development, are
specific to each biosphere Reserve. They correspond to the challenges faced by each territory, as
defined and formulated in the management documents
Each biosphere reserve will have its own jury made up of diverse personalities (from the business,
scientific and artistic domains, as well as from associations and administrations…) who will evaluate
the projects and award the trophies. In each biosphere reserve, the projects will be judged from a
qualitative point of view, taking account of the following criteria:
Reinforcing the links between Man and nature
Linking the project to the territory
Benefits of the project for people other than those steering the project
Exemplarity, capacity for diffusion and duplication
Creation of social links
Originality and innovation of the project
Educational value for the public, elected officials and professionals
Value for the territory
Taking account of landscaping, esthetic and artistic criteria
Project creating employment
Enhancing specific skills
Local nature of the project lead
Technical construction of the project and relevance of the ideas
The value and the number of prizes will be defined by each Reserve, depending on the means of each
Reserve, the surface, population…
