Why the 11:40 AM Start time? The Titanic hit the ice berg at 11:40 PM (Ships time) on April 14, 1912.
So why is the race on April 15, at 11:40 AM? The Titanic actually sank at approximately 2:20 AM on April
15, 1912. But I though getting runners to run at either 11:40 PM at night or 2:20 AM in the morning
might be pushing it, but I will consider it for the 110th anniversary!
Why do the men start later than the women and children? That’s how they loaded the life boats!
How is the scoring done? Both men and women are scored in the same age groups and we will go at least 8
deep?
Is that fair? Well, yes and no, We are giving the women and children a three minute head start, which we
thinks helps even it out, plus think of us as going 4 deep x 2 in the awards! Plus it was not fair how the
lifeboats were loaded was it? Complain and you might get the ice bath challenge!
Is the stress toy being given out as an award, actually a model of the Titanic? Come and find out!
Our race starts and finishes near The National Museum of the Great Lakes. Operated by the Great Lakes
Historical Society, it celebrates the natural and built heritage of the North American Great Lakes. The
museum is also the docking location of a museum Lake freighter, the SS Col. James M. Schoonmaker. The
ship began life on 1 July 1911 at the Great Lakes Engineering Works in Ecorse, Michigan. At the time of her
launch in October 1911 approximately seven months before Titanic sank, she took the title of Queen of
the Lakes which is given to the biggest ship on the Great Lakes, a title she kept until 1914. She was the
flagship of the Shenango Furnace Company where in her first year she broke many Great Lakes cargo
records for hauling iron ore, grain and coal. The Schoonmaker is one of the few remaining vessels afloat
that were contemporaries of the Titanic. She also had long career under three different owners, sailing
until 1980 and ending her career as the Willis Boyer, the name given her by her last owners. The
Schoonmaker became a museum ship in 1987, and was rechristened to its original name on July 1, 2011, its
100th anniversary. Sorry, while the museum is open on April 15, the ship does not open until May 1st.
Our race course spans both sides of the Maumee River in an area that a century ago was lined with many
commercial docks that ships like the Schoonmaker would visit to load and unload cargo. Docks that were
very busy on that fateful day in 1912. So as you run or walk, you are very much journeying through
maritime history.
