The accounting graduate program was ranked 24th in the nation in 2006 by the Public Accounting Report. Our students achieved a higher pass rate on the 2005 CPA exam than any other graduate program in Texas and were second nationwide. Established in 1997, the MAcc degree provides you with an educational experience to meet the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy’s 150-hour requirement to sit for the CPA exam. Our program affords the opportunity to build on your undergraduate accounting education in preparation for an exciting career in accounting, whether in public accounting, private industry, or government. The MAcc degree is a 33-hour program, requiring 18 hours of graduate accounting coursework and 15 hours of supporting graduate business (non-accounting) coursework. The program is flexible, allowing you to choose all of your accounting courses and all but one of your non-accounting electives. Thus, you can tailor your degree plan to your individual career path. You can use the graduate electives to concentrate your study in a second area of expertise or to broaden your graduate business education. The flexibility of the MAcc degree provides for the creation of several career-specific degree tracks. Among the degree tracks available are accounting information systems, auditing and assurance services, and managerial accounting and controllership. While some tracks are accomplished primarily through selected accounting coursework, other tracks require selection of complementary graduate business courses. If you prefer not to specialize, a general graduate accounting program also can be designed. Why do I need a graduate accounting degree? Leading Faculty As a result of the changing accounting environment, the body of professional knowlege has expanded. This knowledge cannot be taught effectively in just four years. Graduate education leads to higher starting salaries, with master’s degree holders receiving a 10 to 20 percent premium over individuals with bachelor’s degrees. Accountants with master’s degrees are typically promoted at a faster rate than those with just a bachelor’s degree. Professional accounting organizations are promoting the 150-hour requirement as the standard for entry into the accounting profession. And finally, master’s degree holders have a higher first-time pass rate on the Uniform CPA Examination. Interning at KPMG gave me the opportunity to put much of the classroom theory I had learned into practice. This hands-on learning experience greatly contributed to my education. Had the MAcc program not allowed time and class credit for the internship, I might have missed this unique opportunity. — Michelle Veve, MAcc 2003 Dedicated to academic excellence, faculty in the MAcc program hold doctoral degrees from leading universities and have professional work experience that brings practical relevance to the classroom.
