QUOTES FOR REFLECTION
MARK LILLA, "GETTING RELIGION: MY LONG-LOST YEARS AS A TEENAGE
EVANGELICAL." NY TIMES MAGAZINE
I wanted to cast doubt on the step he was about to take, to help him see there are
other ways to live, other ways to seek knowledge, love... even self-transformation.
I wanted to convince him his dignity depended on maintaining a free, skeptical
attitude towards doctrine. I wanted... to save him... Doubt, like faith, has to be
learned. It is a skill. But the curious thing about skepticism is that its adherents,
ancient and modern, have so often been proselytizers. In reading them, I've often
wanted to ask: "Why do you care?" Their skepticism offers no good answer to
that question. And I don't have one for myself."
ORSON SCOTT CARD, ENDER'S GAME
Perhaps it's impossible to wear an identity without becoming what you pretend
to be.
NT WRIGHT, LUKE FOR EVERYONE
Jesus’ task is therefore not simply to teach people a new way of life; not simply to
offer a new depth of spirituality; not simply to enable them to go to heaven after
death. Jesus’ task is to defeat the satan, to break his power, to win the decisive
victory which will open the way to God’s new creation in which evil, and even
death itself, will be banished
JUSTIN CRONNIN, THE PASSAGE (AFTERWARD)
It wasn’t too long before I pretty much fell in love with the story. By the end of the
fall, I found myself unable to refuse these characters and my responsibility for
their fates. (Among other things, Iris herself had traveled into the book as both
Amy and the character Alicia, who, like my daughter, has red hair.) You could
say that the whole thing had begun to seem too personal for me to ignore it, while
at the same time, I had a sense that it was simply a better story than anything I’d
ever imagined on my own. I had lots of other professional commitments,
including another novel I was supposed to be working on, but I decided over the
Christmas holidays to record what we’d come up with in an outline, so it
wouldn’t be lost. I sat down at the keyboard, and when I looked up a few days
later, I had thirty single-spaced pages—an outline that would stand pretty much
intact through the writing of the book itself. Then I decided I would write the
first chapter, just to see how it felt. After that, the whole thing just snowballed. I
jettisoned everything else. My motto has always been: write the book that wants
to be written. The Passage wanted to be written.
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I
might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons
for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open
me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is
coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.
PRAYER OF BELIEF
Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared
admit, but through you I am more loved than I ever dared hope. Thank you
for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer
me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the
dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.
PRAYER FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH SIN
Lord Jesus, enable me to see in you the fulfillment of all my true needs,
and may I turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and
living bread. Enable me to see that your Gospel is bigger than my sin, and
that your work breaks the power of sin as well as freeing me from its
penalty. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely and run with
perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and
author of my faith. Amen.

Let us break bread together on our knees
Let us break bread together on our knees
CHORUS

ORDER OF WORSHIP
BRING FORTH
You are salt for the earth, O people,
Salt for the banquet of God!
Share the flavor of life, O people:
Life in the dreams of God!
Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,
CALL TO WORSHIP
TITHES & OFFERINGS
We recognize and respond to the fact that we
worship because God has called us to worship.
The call to worship, usually taken from the
Psalms or one of the poetic prophets, is a
transition from everyday life to the presence of
God.
We acknowledge that God owns everything,
and that our daily bread is from Him. We
worship as we give cheerfully, content with His
provision, generous with what we’ve been
given. If you are visiting today, and especially if
you do not claim the name of Christ, please feel
no obligation to give.
Bring forth the kingdom of peace.
Let us drink wine together on our knees
Let us drink wine together on our knees
Taste, and see the kingdom of justice,
SONGS OF PRAISE
Bring forth the dreams of God!
Let us praise God together on our knees
Let us praise God together on out knees
You are a light on the hill, O people,
We sing songs of praise and worship to
celebrate the beauty and truth of our God as
reflected in the beauty of music and lyrics.

Light for the city of God!
Shine so holy and bright, O people:
Shine on the dreams of God!
You are a seed of the Word, O people,
We worship as we read the Bible aloud,
believing that the Word of God is a living and
active means of grace.
Bring forth the dreams of God!
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Seeds of mercy and seeds of justice,
Grow in the city of God!
We worship as we pray for one another, asking
God to meet the needs of the community.

BENEDICTION

SCRIPTURE READING
We worship as we gather together for
fellowship, sharing life with one another.
SERMON
We submit ourselves to the way of faith and
practice revealed in the Word of God. The
sermon is explanation and exhortation, making
this Word clear and applying it to our lives.
CONFESSION
We confess corporately to acknowledge that
we all alike fall short of the glory of God, but we
also all alike can rest with assurance on His
amazing grace.
COMMUNION
We worship as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper,
or communion, a memorial ritual in which we
celebrate the life and death and resurrection of
Jesus. It is a means of grace in which the gospel
is made evident by the bread and the wine. It is
a meal for the people of God in Christ. We ask
that those who do not claim to follow Christ
would abstain from this meal.
BENEDICTION
We worship as we depart with a “good word”
from God to remind us that He is Lord of our
lives, even when we leave this place.

HYMN OF THANKS
4
For the beauty in our eyes,
from the earth sea and sky.
For the grace in our lives
that reveals the image of Christ.
For giving us daily bread,
homes, family and friends...
For minds to think hearts to love
and hands able to serve.
For strength and health to work,
leisure to rest and play.
For the brave in suffering,
faithful in adversity...
CHORUS
We give thanks, thanks,
Here's our hands in return
For those who seek after truth,
liberty, and justice for all.
For the communion of saints
in every time and place.
Above all for the mercy of Christ,
his promise that heals our lives.

Father we come now in prayerful confession because you have first entered
into communion with us through your Son, our Lord. Through your
sacrificial love you've established and offered peace and reconciliation. Yet
we've wanted to remain your enemy and do life on our own. In our autonomy
we've pretended to be experts for so long that its now become reality, life
without you. In the power of the resurrection you hold forth the promise of
the New World but we've been too satisfied with the status quo. Jesus
forgive us for making you a publicly traded stock that provides just a bit
more wisdom and security for our life. In making your salvation a mere
commodity we've completely missed the magnitude of your proclamation.
Open our eyes and widen our vision to see that the Kingdom of God is near.
Let us practice your New World and lead us with joy to proclaim it's
inauguration to the people we love. Amen.
COMMUNION
All:
Christ has died,
Christ has risen,
Christ will come again.

SERMON TEXT READING
NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD
GOD WITH US
Luke 10:1-12; 13-20 (NIV)
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood,
Nothing but the blood
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood,
Nothing but the blood
You've come to bring peace
To be love, to be nearer to us
You've come to breathe life
To be light, to shine brighter in us
Oh Emmanuel, God with us
5After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead
of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about
to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are
few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out
laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as
lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no
sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say,
‘Peace be to this house!’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest
upon him. But if not, it will return to you.7 And remain in the same house,
eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages.
Do not go from house to house.8 Whenever you enter a town and they
receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them,
‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a
town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the
dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you.
Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell
you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are
subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like
lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on
serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, andnothing
shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are
subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

People:
Thanks be to God!
Oh, the blood I know
It washes white as snow
And O, I am redeemed
It washes me clean
For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood,
Nothing but the blood
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood,
Nothing but the blood
Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood,
Nothing but the blood
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood,
Nothing but the blood
Our Deliverer you are Savior
In Your presence we find our strength
Over everything our redemption
God with us you are God with us
You've come to be hope
To this world, for Your honor and name
You've come to take sin
To bear shame, and to conquer the grave
Oh Emmanuel, oh God with us
You are here You are holy
We are standing In Your glory

NEW TESTAMENT READING
Acts 16:6-16
6 And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having
been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And
when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia,
but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 So, passing by Mysia,
they went down lto Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the
night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and
saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul
had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia,
concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. The
Conversion of Lydia. 11 So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct
voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, 12 and
from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of
Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some
days. 13 And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the
riverside, here we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat
down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14 One who
heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a
seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened
her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 15 And after she
was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you
have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and
stay.” And she prevailed upon us.

SONG OF PREPARATION
GOD OF ALL COMFORT
God of all comfort, You laid all comfort down
Emptied Your power, poured Your power out
You took up our flesh, more than glory's disguise
You unveiled heaven, the hour You bled and died
CHORUS
O Great King, O Redeemer
Your comfort proves all other chains
It was for freedom that You freed us
that we'd live as Love's bold slaves
God of the heavens, You moved into our town
took up our curses to bear Your renown
Your heart is a scandal, love beyond belief
You'll flood this world, as waters cover the seas
King of all wisdom, You've made us all fools
gifting salvation through Love over rules
You took our chorus, “I am my own”
And gave us a new song, “Lord, You are my home.”
As You are, may we be
Make Your good work complete
By Your Spirit we sing Amen
Your kingdom come without end
