The U.S. Constitution is based on seven principles, or goals. Remembering them is easy, use the mnemonic… FLIP RoCS Federalism (FLIP RoCS) Federalism is the sharing of powers between the state and national government. National State Some powers are state powers, some national, and some are shared. Limited Power of Government (FLIP RoCS) Power is limited by laws. Rule of law – everyone must follow the same laws no matter who you are, what your jobs is, or how much money you have! POWER Individual Rights (FLIP RoCS) The basic liberties and rights that are guaranteed to citizens. These rights are listed in the Bill of Rights. Popular Sovereignty (FLIP RoCS) “Popular” means people. “Reign” is the root word of “Sovereignty” which means rule. Popular sovereignty means that the people rule. All political power come from the people Republicanism (FLIP RoCS) Elected representatives serve at the will of the people. Checks and Balances (FLIP RoCS) Each branch of government can check, or control, the power of the other two branches. Separation of Powers (FLIP RoCS) Powers are divided among different government branches Separating powers guards against putting too much power in the hands of a few people.
