Director’s Welcome Board of Directors Peggy Kutcher, President Dana Philbrook, Treasurer Robert Snyder, Vice President Joanna Vanden, Clerk Anne Cushman Steve Landau Maggie McNally Janet Murray John Musser Welcome to our eighth annual Party Under the Harvest Moon. This year we celebrate Food For Free’s 30th anniversary and honor those who created the organization. Party Under the Harvest Moon Committee Julia Auger Dianne Butt Anne Cushman Christine Hannon Michelle Holcomb Peggy Kutcher David Leslie Maggie McNally Patrick Mertens John Musser Robert Snyder Joanna Vanden Michael Walz Food For Free Staff David Leslie, Executive Director Michelle Holcomb, Development Director Dennis McCarthy, Operations Manager Adam Collins, Driver’s Assistant Julio Francisco, Driver’s Assistant Dann Friedman, Driver Jordan McCarron, Field of Greens Farm Manager Christian Oviedo, Driver Blake Roberts, Administrative Assistant Simon Walsh, Home Delivery Driver 2 Present tonight are five of Food For Free’s founders: Bill August, C. T. Butler, Brian Feigenbaum, Mary Russell, and Jai Wilson. Their work has helped to feed tens of thousands of people over the last 30 years, and to rescue millions of pounds of food from the landfill. We salute their commitment to ending hunger and their vision of a world where everyone has access to healthy, safe, delicious food. Food For Free was created in 1981 when a group of Cambridge activists realized that local food programs were running out of food, while nearby grocery stores were throwing away their surplus. Using borrowed vans, these volunteers began rescuing surplus food and distributing it to pantries, meal programs, and shelters. Food For Free was incorporated in 1983 and received 501(c)(3) status in 1985. Today our Produce Rescue program serves 80 local food programs and helps to feed more than 20,000 people. In 1991, Ari Kurtz created our Field of Greens program to increase the amount of fresh produce available to local food programs. In 2010, we harvested 7,000 pounds of nutrient-dense organic vegetables for distribution to local food programs. In 2002, the City of Cambridge asked Food For Free to launch a Home Delivery program. Home Delivery now brings food to 54 lowincome clients, all of whom have disabilities or chronic illnesses. Our newest program is the Transportation Partnership, created in 2010 at the request of the Greater Boston Food Bank. The Transportation Partnership brings food from the GBFB to 11 food programs that lack their own transportation. Your participation tonight means that 20,000 people at risk for hunger will get to share in this season’s bounty. 3 • Home-bound seniors and people with disabilities will receive deliveries of food right to their doorsteps, not just at the holidays, but all year long. • Food pantries in Cambridge and Somerville will have all the trimmings to go with their Thanksgiving turkeys—sweet potatoes, squash, collard greens, apples, and onions. • Emergency shelters can offer their guests the same fresh fruit and vegetables you would want your family to eat. Every dollar you contribute tonight — whether that be at the silent auction, the “Farm Stand”, or through a Fund-A-Need donation — will support our Produce Rescue program, which brings fresh food to pantries, meal programs, shelters, and clinics, and which also provides fruits and vegetables for our Home Delivery program. Each dollar becomes three pounds of food for someone who really needs the help. So, enjoy the evening, and feel good about bidding, because when you win, so do they. Food For Free thanks all of our sponsors for making this event possible. They then visit grocery stores, bakeries and farms, where they gather produce, baked goods, and other foods. May through November, we collect from eight Farmers’ Markets, annually rescuing 80,000 pounds of local produce. We distributed 1,005,000 pounds of food in 2010. In 2011, our Produce Rescue and purchasing programs are expected to distribute more than 1,000,000 pounds of food to 80 local food programs. The Transportation Partnership This new program picks up food from the GBFB and delivers it to nine Cambridge food programs that lack their own transportation. Field of Greens Each summer, we supplement the food we rescue with vegetables grown by our own staff and volunteers. In 2010, we harvested over 7,000 pounds of organically grown vegetables. Home Delivery Home Delivery brings monthly deliveries of food to low-income elders and people with disabilities who live in Cambridge. 34
