The value of
Owning Your Future
A
move to a Life Plan Community can bring with it questions about how life will
change. But at The Cypress of Raleigh, Members enjoy the benefits of changing
their address while leaving the life they are accustomed to intact.
“The Cypress gives our Members the opportunity to own their future instead of being
subject to the endless uncertainties of life at this age,” says Craig Huggins, one of the
Managing partners at The Cypress of Raleigh. “At The Cypress our Members tell us they
have more choices, more control and as they look down the road – greater independence
compared to living in their previous home. They also tell us they have virtually eliminated
all surprises in their cost of living and that their families have much greater peace of mind.
The value we offer is the freedom to live as you wish.”
The core of The Cypress of Raleigh’s value is the flexibility and control it offers to its
Members, who own their own homes, and enjoy amenities that exceed other communities,
but at a price that others cannot match. “Our community operates debt free, and this
allows us to offer our Members the highest level of services, benefits and amenities at the
lowest monthly cost in the area. Services and amenities include: a flexible dining plan with
the option of home delivery of meals, housekeeping, transportation, a library, a salon, an
art studio, fitness and wellness programs, elegant landscaping, and first rate health care
benefits,” continues Craig.
“The value is felt monthly by our Members who on average are dealing with fewer bills
to pay. The living is easier here and our Members are free to live life on their own terms
with less hassle but much more predictability and value. What really changes is their
address and that they have a lot less to worry about.”
ART
THE A RT OF
Earthscape sculpture Forum
HOME
Visitors to the new Aloft Hotel on Hillsborough Street across
from NC State’s campus will notice a 55 foot sculpture entitled,
Overtones. The artist behind the spire-like sculpture that pays
homage to the iconic university bell tower, Thomas Sayre, is
familiar to Members at The Cypress of Raleigh. In 2015, Sayre
Thomas Sayre
used outdoor space at The Cypress to produce another large-scale
Earthcast sculpture, entitled Forum, that later was installed at the University of Maryland at Baltimore.
Members have fond memories of Sayre’s time at the community as they were able to become active
participants in the creation of Forum. Setting up lawn chairs to watch the artist’s progress, they
chatted with Sayre about the concept, design and process of creating the piece, which was cast
from the earth of their community. As witnesses to the digging, construction, pouring and raising
of the structure, Members of The Cypress felt a strong bond with the work. Several Members even
journeyed to Baltimore to see its installation and final home among the students and faculty at the
University of Maryland. Though the swirling spiral at NC State is much closer, Forum will always
be close to the community’s heart.

The Four H’s
David Ratchford, an industry thought leader and speaker on senior living
and Life Plan Communities, visited The Cypress of Raleigh in May to discuss
successful retirement living with the “Four H’s”. He defined communities like
The Cypress of Raleigh as the best representation of four major industries:
Housing, Hospitality, Holistic Wellness and Health Care.
David Ratchford

Housing is the cornerstone of a great community, and the more options the better. Villa and
Cottage homes at The Cypress of Raleigh cater to the diverse tastes of today’s senior and afford
them the opportunity to customize. “Beyond stylish and modern homes, club-like amenities and
common areas allow residents to engage with their neighbors and enjoy a sense of community.”
H OS PITA LIT Y
Hospitality addresses the opportunity for social stimulation that a community offers.
“Today’s retiree comes to a Life Plan Community with high expectations,” says Ratchford.
“They are assertive, well-traveled, tech-savvy, racially diverse and socially-minded. They are
young at heart.” Communities like The Cypress of Raleigh answer these hospitality needs
with creative and engaging programs and partnerships.
H O LI S TI C W E LLN E S S
Holistic Wellness addresses all the areas of well-being with a focus on prevention and future care
should the need arise. “Communities like The Cypress emphasize vitality and health,” Ratchford
continues. “And, they foster social, spiritual, emotional and intellectual wellness as well.”
H E A LTH CA R E
Like The Cypress of Raleigh, a quality Life Plan Community offers multiple levels of healthcare
from skilled nursing and rehabilitative services to assisted living, memory care and in home care.
“Look for healthcare certifications, consistent high quality ratings and state-of-the-art,
wellness-centered design,” says Ratchford.

DINING
“Cook what our Members want,” is the creed
of John Mersinger, Executive Chef at The Cypress,
who lets the tastes and interests of his diners inspire his menu.
Dining at The Cypress offers both formal and casual dining,
and its culinary explorations are always creative and satisfying.
Chef John and his staff of twenty plan and prepare lunch and dinner
six days a week, plus Sunday brunch. The extensive menu is heavily
influenced by seasonal produce and local fare. Freshness, in both
ingredient and taste, is always the emphasis for his staff.

Members can enjoy this creativity with a new menu every three to four months as well as special
themed meals, ranging from traditional holiday menus and chocolate Valentine’s Day themes
to German or Asian cuisine. Chef John also creates meals around special dietary needs, including
low calorie, lower cholesterol and sodium choices, and gluten-free options. But the center of effort
for Chef John is always the Members’ taste.

THE
INRY SYNDROME
Have you ever heard of the INRY Syndrome? Well it’s often heard in
our Discovery Room as we sit around the table and discuss the idea
of a move to The Cypress of Raleigh. In fact, I know it’s a common
conversation for lots of people when asked about moving to a
retirement community – “I’m Not Ready Yet”.
When an individual
Too often people say the phrase “I’m not ready yet”, and when we discuss
things further it turns out to be that they just may not want to face what
it takes to make a move. Perhaps the better answer is “I am ready for
a move, I just need some help to get started”.
where to start, we
When an individual or a couple comes to us interested in moving but
not knowing where to start, we have an incredible breadth of resources
to support them. First and foremost, we explore what interests them.
We determine the size of residence that's going to be comfortable for
them and determine their time frame. Next, we discuss where and how
they live now, plus what they would like to bring to furnish their new
residence. Often people find that they are able to bring many of their
important possessions and furnishings, and they begin to make plans
for gifting or donating the rest. We can help with resource specialists
in our area who support the need for downsizing. These individuals are
quite helpful and make moving much easier. In the end, our Members
often say, “this was easier than I thought it would be, and I’m so happy
with my new home”.
to support them.
I invite you to learn more about The Cypress of Raleigh and the
opportunity for a move to one of our new Phase II Villas in 2018
or perhaps something already in place with a move to a current Villa
or Cottage home. We can help you overcome your concern of “I’m not
ready yet” and enable you to think that “I may be ready a bit sooner!”

Joy at The Cypress
M E M B E R PRO FI LE : JOY H A RT ZO G
Resident Joy Hartzog took a longer road home to The Cypress of Raleigh
than others. Her husband first discovered the community prior to his death
in 2007, at which time the couple were interested in moving to one of the
community’s cottage homes. It would be another two years before Joy
adopted Piper, a black “snoodle” (Schnauzer/Poodle mix) puppy and came
home to the community that had drawn her and her husband.
“We were attracted by the self-directed ease of life at The Cypress of Raleigh.
We didn’t want to have to worry about continuing care as we aged, and
we wanted a community close to our age group. The Cypress could offer
all those things with an assurance of quality. It sounded perfect,” says Joy, who changed her plans
from a cottage home to a two-bedroom villa apartment and moved to The Cypress in 2009. “This is
a community who cares for its own, respects your privacy but also lets you have the social life you
want, whether that is a little or a lot. The community is also welcoming to new residents. A new
neighbor will never sit alone in the dining room. Members always reach out to get to know people.”
Walking Piper provides Joy with a lot of opportunities for exercise and socializing in this pet friendly
community. But she also participates in a number of other activities. From social and teaching groups
through nearby Research Triangle universities to art classes and fitness, Joy has remained involved
on her own terms. “Nearly anything I could want is available to me at The Cypress,” she continues.
“I have taken three years of art classes and I am active in the community’s social activities committee
and wellness program. They have excellent fitness classes located in the Clubhouse Fitness Center
and are patient and gentle with all attendees. You never feel stressed to attend every class or that
you have to catch up. It is the same attitude you find everywhere at The Cypress. Your life here
is self-directed and as low key or active as you want.”
