- iii INTRODUCTION
The purpose of t h i s study i s a dual ones (a) to trace the number of
Jews i n each of the urban centres of Canada i n a l l the census years during the period
of one hundred years from 1851 to 1951? and ascertain what relationship there may be
between the s i z e group of the Jewish population and the growth or decline of the
Jewish population i n that community; and (b) to provide a gazetteer or l i s t of every
incorporated c i t y , town and v i l l a g e in Canada which had Jews among i t s residents i n
any of the census years during the century from 1851 to 1951* arranged alphabetically
by provinces, and also i n order of s i z e of Jewish community־
In Canada we are fortunate i n having as r e l i a b l e source material the
o f f i c i a l decennial census s t a t i s t i c s from 1851 to 1951, and are not compelled to
f a l l back upon estimates which are often haphazard and unreliable. The sources of
the s t a t i s t i c s showing the number of Jews i n each urban centre i n Canada l i s t e d i n
this study are the o f f i c i a l censuses of the provinces of Upper and lower Canada
(Ontario and Quebec) taken i n 1851-52 and i n 1861, and the nine censuses of Canada
and i t s provinces taken decennially since Confederation and commencing i n 1871•
Every one of these « l e w n decennial censuses included a question on the
r e l i g i o n of each person enumerated, and a l l of the decennial censuses from 1881 to
1951, with the sole exception of 1891, also included a question on the ethnic origin
of each person enumerated ״There were censuses taken i n Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
i n 1851 and 1861, but the s t a t i s t i c s for these provinces prior to 1881 do not give the
number of Jews i n those years־
In the study here presented we have c l a s s i f i e d the urban Jewish community
in Canada into s i x main size groups, and some of these size groups into smaller s i z e
groups. The number of Jewish communities i n each of these size groups, as compared
with the number of Jewish communities in the same size groups i n the United S t a t e s ,
w i l l be found i n Table 1״
Our estimate of the Jewish population of Canada i n 1957 i s 2U0,000, which
i s U06 percent of the estimated Jewish population of the United States *־Of the
Jewish population i n the United S t a t e s , 75 percent are r e s i d e n t i n urban centres whose
Jewish population exceeds 140,000, as compared with 72 percent l i v i n g i n urban centres
with Jewish population exceeding 1*0000 עi n Canada־
Montreal and Toronto are the only two Jewish communities i n Canada with
Jewish population exceeding 10500ן, the size group which i s usually considered as
including the large Jewish communities i n the United States, but we have added to
t h i s group a sub-group with Jewish population ranging from 15,000 to 39,999, which
includes Winnipeg, so that the group described as large Jewish communities i n Canada
includes the metropolitan areas of Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg.
In the medium sized group of Jewish communities i n Canada we have placed
those i n which the Jewish population ranges from 1,000 to 114,999, and have divided
them into two sub-groups: those with Jewish population exceeding 5$000 but l e s s than
15,000, and those with Jewish population exceeding 1,000 but l e s s than 5,000 ־A l l the

comHranities ,within the f i r s t sub-group with Jewish population ranging from 5*000 to
114,999 with the exception of-Vancouver, were s a t e l l i t e communities of Montreal and
Toronto. In the second sub-group with Jewish population exceeding 1,000 but l e s s than
5,000 are such Jewish communities as Ottawa, Hamilton, Windsor, Edmonton, Calgary and
Halifax.

In the group of small Jewish communities i n Canada we have placed those
which have at l e a s t 100 but l e s s than 1,000 Jewish residents, and have divided them
into two sub-groups? those with Jewish population exceeding 350, or approximately
100 Jewish families5 and those with at' l e a s t 100 but l e s s than 350 Jewish residents,
and i n which the number of Jewish families ranges from 29 to 99.
In the group of very small Jewish communities are those with Jewish popul a t i o n ranging from 35 to 99 i n which Jewish families number from ten to 28. Such
communities are usually too small to maintain a synagogue and rabbi, although there
are s u f f i c i e n t male adults i n the community to form the "minyan" necessary for communal r e l i g i o u s worship.
We have c l a s s i f i e d a l l communities i n which there are l e s s than 35 Jews,
or the minimum of ten Jewish families under the heading of ״unorganized," for there
can be no organized congregation and few i f any f a c i l i t i e s necessary for Jewish community l i f e where there are fewer than ten families, and i n the period from 1921 to
1951 there has been a minimum of 128 and a maximum of 211 towns and v i l l a g e s i n Canada
with no more than one Jewish family among their residents.

In Table II w i l l be found the number of urban Jewish communities i n
each size group, c l a s s i f i e d by provinces in each of the census years 1851
From that table i t w i l l be seen that the number of incorporated c i t i e s ,
villages in Canada in which Jews were resident increased from 9 in 1851
191*1, and decreased to 612 in 1951•
The decrease which took place in the decade from 191*1 to 1951 was
not in the larger Jewish communities, but in the smallest Jewish communities i n
which the Jewish population was l e s s than 35• !here was no decrease i n the number
of urban centres i n Canada i n which more than 35 Jews were resident.
Of the 612 urban Jewish communities in 1951 in Canada, three had
more than 15,000 Jewish residents; twelve had more than 1,000 but l e s s than 10,000;
forty-one had more than 100 but l e s s than 1,000; f i f t y - t h r e e had more <than 31* but
l e s s than 100; and 5^3 had l e s s than 35 Jewish residenis.
Of the nine urban Jewish communities irt 1851 i n Canada only three
had more than ten Jewish resident families® In each census year the number of communi t i e s with less" than ten resident Jewish families increased until i n 191*1 the
number of urban Jewish communities in Canada with l e s s than ten Jewish resident
families reached a peak of 631. Of these communities, 93 had only one, 61 had two,
and 63 had only three Jewish residents.
The decade between 191*1 and 1951 was the only period i n which the
number of urban centres in Canada with Jewish residents decreased from a peak of
731* i n 191*1 to 612 in 1951. The number of communities i n Canada with 35 or more
Jewish residents increased from 3 in 1851 to 103 i n 191*1 and to 109 i n 1951; while
the number of communities with l e s s than 35 Jewish residents, which had increased
from s i x in 1851 to a peak of 631 in 191*1, decreased to 503 i n 1951•
There were no Jewish communities i n Canada with 15,000 or more Jewish
residents before 1911, and those with more than 15,000 Jewish residents but l e s s than
100,000 numbered two (Montreal and Toronto) in 1911 and 1921, increased to three
(Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg) in 1931, and s t i l l numbered three i n 1951•
Canadian Jewish communities with more than 1,000 but l e s s than 15,000
Jewish residents! numbered two in 1891 (Montreal and Toronto), increased to three i n
1901 and 1911 (Winnipeg, Ottawa and Hamilton), and eight in 1921, of which three were
i n Ontario, two in Quebec, and one each in Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.
By 1931 Canadian communities with more than 1,000 but l e s s than
15,000 Jewish residents had increased to ten, of which four were i n Ontario, two each
i n the provinces of Quebec and Alberta, and one each in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and the total number i n this size group remained the same i n 191*1.
By 1951 Canadian communities with more than 1,000 but l e s s than
15,000 Jewish residents had increased to twelve, of which s i x were i n Ontario, two
each i n Quebec and Alberta, and one each i n the provinces of British Columbia and
Nova Scotia.
Montreal was the only Jewish community in Canada i n 1851 with more
than 100 Jewish residents, and i n the census years 1861, 1871 and 1881 the number
of Jewish communities within the size group exceeding 100 but l e s s than 1,000 had
increased to three (Montreal, Toronto and Quebec). The number of Jewish communities
within that size group has continued to increase and numbered 1*1 in 1951, of which
22 were i n Ontario, s i x i n Quebec, foutf in Nova Scotia, three in New Brunswick, two
in each of the provinces of Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Col&abia and
one in Newfoundland.
- viii There were only two retry small Jewish communities in Canada i n 1851
and 1861 in which there were at l e a s t ten but no more than 28 Jewish families, and i n
which the Jewish population ranged frott a minimum of 35 to a maximum of 99 ־Those
two communities were Quebec and Toronto i n 1851 and Hamilton and Victoria i n 1861.
By 1901 the number of very small Jewish communities i n this size
group had increased to eight and by 1911 the number had jumped to U1 and continued to
increase u n t i l they numbered 53 in 1951, of which 25 were i n Ontario, seven i n Manitoba, s i x each i n Quebec and Saskatchewan; four in British Columbia, two each in
Alberta and Nova Scotia, and one i n Newfoundland־
The number of towns and v i l l a g e s in Canada with l e s s than ten r e s i dent Jewish families increased from s i x in 1851 to 88 in 1901; jumped to 281 in 1911
and continued to increase u n t i l a peak of 631 was reached i n 191*1, and then decreased
to 503 i n 1951» The greatest decrease i n this size group took place i n Saskatchewan
from 188 i n 191*1 to 112 i n 1951־
In the period from 1861 to 1911 inclusive, Ontario was the province
with the largest number of towns and v i l l a g e s i n which fewer than ten Jewish families
were resident. In the period from 1921 to 191*1 inclusive, Saskatchewan became the
province with the largest number of towns and v i l l a g e s with fewer than ten resident
Jewish families־
Ontario was the province with the largest number of towns and
v i l l a g e s with only one Jewish resident in the census years from 1871 to 1911 inclusi v e , as was the Province of Quebec i n 1921, 1931 and 1951? while Saskatchewan was
the province with the largest number of v i l l a g e s with only one Jewish resident i n
191*1•
Of the 503 towns and v i l l a g e s i n Canada i n 1951 whose Jewish
population numbered l e s s than 35, those with Jewish population ranging from 1* to 31*
numbered 312; those with three Jewish residents numbered 1*5; those with two numbered
58! and those with only one Jewish resident numbered 88, of which 27 were i n Quebec,
18 i n Alberta, 17 in Saskatchewan, 7 each i n Ontario and Manitoba, 6 in British Columbia, 3 i n Nova Scotia, and one each in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and the Yukon־
The f a c t that i n every one of the decennial censuses during the
hundred years which have elapsed from 1851 to 1951 more than two-thirds of a l l urban
centres in Canada i n which Jews had l e s s than ten Jewish families among their residents and that there were 191 towns and v i l l a g e s in 1951 with no more than one resident Jewish family, and 88 towns and v i l l a g e s i n which only one Jew was resident shows
that the mar$r d i f f i c u l t i e s which faced the Jewish immigrant who ventured to establish
himself i n the pioneer stages of settlement did not deter him from settling in the
hamlets and v i l l a g e s strung like beads along the single tracked railroads which pushed
their way across the continent־
Although the southern portion of the virgin prairies became accessi b l e for settlement and cultivation when the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway
was couple ted from the Atlantic to the P a c i f i c i n 1885, i t was the period from 1903
to 1911* which was marked by the largest influx of immigrants and the greatest spurt
in the construction of railway branch l i n e s i n the area which became the provinces of
Saskatchewan and Alberta i n 1905־
Before 1901, except for a few Hudson's Bay Company trading posts
and North-west Mounted Police posts, the c a t t l e ranches adjoining the f o o t h i l l s of
the Rockies and the Indian reservations most of the vast expanse of park land and
prairi* north of the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway was uncultivated and
very sparsely populated־
- ix The Canadian Government's offer of free homesteads of 160 acres of
land to a l l who would s e t t l e upon and cultivate i t was the main inducement which
attracted the great stream of immigration to the newly established provinces of
Alberta and Saskatchewan and the adjoining western portion of Manitoba.
Many of the homesteaders came from the older provinces i n EiBtern
Canada, the western United States and Great Britain, but almost half of them were
European immigrants, among whom were many Ukrainians, Germans, Poles, Roumanians,
Hungarians, Doukhobors, and Scandinavians ־Among the homesteaders were also the
Jewish immigrants who settled with the assistance of the Jewish Colonization A s s o c i ation i n the Jewish farm settlements of Hirsch, lipton, Sonnenfeld and Ederibridge
in Saskatchewan and Rumsey and Montefiore in Alberta i n the period from 1892 to
1910.
Branch railways followed population* and population moved in, in
anticipation of railways. In reality, the s e t t l e r s took up homesteads i n areas i n
which a railway was already projected or under construction, and i t was reaaQnable
to assume that branch lines would follow i f the new community could o f f e r s u f f i c i e n t
traffico
As a rule, the f i r s t land settled by the incoming population was within a
b e l t extending ten miles on each side of the projected railway, and stations or f l a g
stops were usually provided by the railway at distances seven ־to ten miles apart,
and i t was found not profitable f o r farmers to haul grain to market more than ten to
f i f t e e n miles.
At each of these f l a g stops or s t a t i o n s on the railways a small
centre developed to serve the needs of the farmers within hauling distance of that
point. Such service! centres, u s m l l y very small, were unincorporated hamlets with
a t o t a l population ranging from 20 to 80 persons, containing from 5 to 20 houses,
a small railway station which included a telegraph o f f i c e , one or two grain e l e c t o r s ,
one, or at most two, general s t o r e s , and 9. post o f f i c e , usually housed i n the general
store or i n a room i n one of the houses i n the hamlet.
Hamlets are not considered as urban centres, and are not l i s t e d i n
this study, which includes only incorporated v i l l a g e s , towns and c i t i e s and such
portions of unincorporated but urban communities as are within the metropolitan area
of larger urban centres־
A v i l l a g e , the smallest incorporated urban centre, must have a minimum population of 100 resident within an area not exceeding 214.0 acres i n Saskatchewan; a minimum of 35 separate dwellings i n Alberta; ijO inhabited houses within
a maximum area of 60 arpents and immoveable property valued a t $50,000 at l e a s t i n
Quebec j a minimum population of 500 within an area not exceeding 614.0 acres i n
Manitoba, and a minimum population of 750 within an area of 500 acres i n Ontario.
I t i s estimated that for every incorporated c i t y , town and v i l l a g e
i n Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, there are at l e a s t two hamlets with l e s s
than 35 houses.
Unlike the older provinces on the Atlantic coast and the provinces
of Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, no one ethnic group forms the majority of
the population i n the three provinces of Manitoba,, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
The Jewish countxy storekeeper who conducted the general stores i n
many of the hamlets and v i l l a g e s of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta i n the
period from 1901 to 1939 played an important and practically indispensable role i n •׳־
the development of the country north of the Canadian Pacific Railway's main l i n e .

The population which streamed in to clear and cultivate the land in
that area were mainly from the peasant stocks of Eastern and Central Europe ־Few of
then knew any English, and many could not understand the language of their neighbours
©f different ethnic origin ־Merchants of Anglo-Celtic origin from Eastern Canada,
the United States or Great Britain who understood English only could not have served
the needs of the immigrant s e t t l e r s whe differed so widely in ethnic origin, language
and folk ways, even i f they had been willing to make their homes amongst them.
The Jewish merchant conducting the general store in the hamlet or v i l lage had himself come from Russia, Poland, Austria or Roumania, and was no stranger
to the needs, language and customs of most of the s e t t l e r s who, like him, had ceme
to make their new home i n Canada. He soon acquired a knowledge of English and could
often make himself understood in German, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Roumanian and
Hungarian. I f he did not knew these languages upon arrival, he made i t his business
to pick up a speaking knowledge of them, and i f there was an Indian Reservation in
the neighbourhood, he soon acquired a smattering of one er two Indian dialects f e r
good measure.
He often opened a store before the railway actually reached the community, and freighted his supplies by waggon team from the railhead ־His store was
usually the community meeting place in the early days of settlement. He sold groceri e s , shoes, clothing, yard goods, fur coats, household remedies, harness and hardware. He bought butter and eggs, hides and raw furs from the farmers, and knew the
name of each a r t i c l e in several languages ־He was not only the merchant, but also
l e t t e r writer, translator, adviser and friend to h i s customers־
In the period between 1930 and 1951 several important changes took
place in the agricultural economy of Western Canada. A major economic depression
which drastically reduced the purchasing power of the farmer was followed by the
outbreak of World War I I in 1939, which in turn was followed by higher prices for
agricultural products and higher land values ־The shortage of manpower on the farms
brought about by the war was counterbalanced by rapid mechanization ־Fewer men produced larger crops than ever before־
The mechanization of farm work and the displacement of horse-drawn
implements and waggons by tractors and motor trucks caused a sharf57xfin1ihe u s e
horses, and the distance the farmer can travel in his truck or automobile became much
greater than the ten to f i f t e e n miles he had previously travelled i n his horse-drawn
waggon.
This brought about a change i n buying habits. The farm family no
longer depended upon the v i l l a g e general store and the mail order house to supply
a l l i t s needs. The farmer s t i l l hauled his grain to the grain elevator i n the neare s t hamlet or v i l l a g e , where he also bought his groceries and received his mail, but
v i l l a g e general s t o r e s declined i n number and importance ־The farm family purchased
i t s shoes, clothing, furniture and radios i n the larger urban centres where the
specialty stores offered greater variety and better values than the general store in
the nearby village could provide־
Most of the rural population in the prairie provinces by 1951 could
speak English and more than 70 percent of the population was Canadian—born ־The
Jewish general storekeeper no longer f u l f i l l e d an indispensable function; and as the
older merchants retired and others moved to the larger towns and c i t i e s the number of
villages with l e s s than ten Jewish resident families declined, so that while the total
Jewish urban population increased, the number of incorporated c i t i e s , towns and v i l lages in which Jews were resident in 1951 decreased.
- xl Jews have never formed the m a j o r i t y of the t o t a l population i n any
c i t y , town or v i l l a g e i n Canada, and i n Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg, the t h r e e
l a r g e s t c i t i e s i n Canada, Jews formed l e s s than seven percent of the t o t a l population
and t h i s percentage shows signs of decreasing since the t o t a l population i s i n c r e a s ing a t a g r e a t e r r a t e than the Jewish population i n these c i t i e s .
No municipal ward i n any c i t y i n c anada has had a m a j o r i t y of Jews
i n i t s population since 1931, the only year i n which two municipal wards i n Montreal
had a majority of Jews among t h e i r population, S t . Louis Ward with 514»9 p e r c e n t and
Laurier Ward with 51.0 percent. Despite a prevalent impression t h a t there i s a p r e dominantly Jewish f e d e r a l and p r o v i n c i a l constituency i n each of the c i t i e s of Montr e a l , Toronto and Winnipeg, Jews have never foiroed the m a j o r i t y i n any f e d e r a l or
p r o v i n c i a l constitutency i n Canada<>
Increases i n the number and percentage of Jews among the urban popula t i o n have been c h a r a c t e r i s t i c i n the period from 1931 to 1951 i n the newer suburban
areas of Forest H i l l Village and York Township i n Metropolitan Toronto; Outreraont and
Mount Royal Ward i n Metropolitan Montreal and the municipality of West Kildonan i n
Metropolitan Winnipeg, while decreases i n the number and percentage of Jews among the
population have characterized the older wards and the areas where the housing accommodation available i s outmoded and sub-standard i n q u a l i t y . The Jewish population i n
the new suburban areas i s spread over a wider a r e a , and i s not l i k e l y to reach the
degree d!f concentration which developed i n the older low r e n t a l a r e a s .
The c h a r t s i n Figs. 1 to 14 i n c l u s i v e on page®
and
show graphi c a l l y the increase or decrease i n the Jewish population of communities with more
than 300 Jews. From the graph i n F i g . 1 i t w i l l be seen t h a t the growth of the
Jewish population i n comsunities with more than 10,000 Jews since 1911 has been continued and p a r t i c u l a r l y Barked i n the c i t i e s of Montreal and Toronto. I n Winnipc g
the growth was rapid u n t i l 1921 and has l e v e l l e d off i n the period from 1921 t o 1951.
All the Jewish communities which have had a Jewish population exceeding 1,000 i n the period from 1911 to 1951* with the exception of Regina, have shown
a continuous and comparatively rapid r a t e of i n c r e a s e . Regina i s the only exception.
I t s Jewish population reached 1,010 i n 1931 and has decreased i n the years 19141 and
1951. Regina has comparatively few manufacturing i n d u s t r i e s and i s the p r o v i n c i a l
c a p i t a l and the service centre f o r the surrounding r u r a l population, whose purchasing
power was d r a s t i c a l l y decreased by the drought and depression period between 1931 and
191*1.
The graphs i n Fig. 3 shew the trend of t h e Jewish population i n the
four Jewish communities which have had a Jewish population exceeding 500 but l e s s
than 1,000 a t some time within the period from 1911 to 1951 ־Of the f o u r communities
shown i n t h i s graph, London and S t . Catharines* have shown a continuous and rapid
increase, p a r t i c u l a r l y since 19141, while the Jewish population of S a i n t John i n New
Brunswick, which showed a rapid increase to a peak of 8148 i n 1921, declined s t e e p l y

Saskatoon Jewish community grew r a p i d l y i n the period from 1911 to 1921, b u t i t s
growth -slowed down i n the period from 1921 to 1931 and has l e v e l l e d o f f i n the period

The graph i n Fig״
shows the growth of the Jewish community i n
Canadian c i t i e s with Jewish population exceeding 300 but l e s s than 500 in the period
from 1921 to 1951. There was a steep increase of the Jewish population i n a l l of
these communities i n the period from 1891 to 1911. The communities i n the industr i a l c i t i e s of Oshawa and Kitchener-Waterloo have continued their increase i n each
of the censuses from 1911 to 1951* while the Jewish population of Kingston, which
increased rapidly to 1921, decreased i n 1931, and resumed i t s increase in the period
from 1931 to 1951־
The population of the Jewish communities of Glace Bay, Sydney
and the combined twin c i t i e s of Fort William and Port Arthur reached a peak in 191*1,
as did the c i t y of Quebec in 1931, and declined i n 1951־
The gazeteer of Jewish urban communities in Canada which forms
the major portion of this study contains f i v e tables ״Tables 1 and 2 give the
number and proportion of Jews to the t o t a l population in a l l urban centres i n
Canada with Jewish residents, c l a s s i f i e d by provinces and l i s t e d alphabetically

1951 i n 296 out of the 378 c i t i e s and towns i n Canada with t o t a l population exceeding 2,500 ־There were Jews resident in a l l of the 31* largest c i t i e s in Canada with
t o t a l population exceeding 30,000 ־Jews were also resident i n 69 out of the 72 Canadian c i t i e s and towns with t o t a l population ranging from 10 5 000 to 29,999 ־The
only three c i t i e s i n this s i z e group i n which no Jews were resident in 1951 were

The c i t y of London, with a t o t a l population of 95,3143 i n 1951 and
Jewish population of 969 w i l l no doubt see i t s t o t a l population exceeding 100,000
and i t s Jewish population exceeding 1,000 by 1961.
Of the 214 Canadian c i t i e s and metropolitan areas with t o t a l populat i o n i n 1951 ranging from 30,000' to 99,999, communities with Jewish population exceeding 10a numbered 22, and the only two c i t i e s within t h i s size group with Jewish populat i o » l e s s than 100 were Hull, which i s r e a l l y a p a r t of metropolitan Ottawa, and Three
Rivers, both i n the province of Quebec.
A l l other Jewish communities i n Canada with Jewish population ranging
from 100 to 1+00 in 1951 were i n c i t i e s and towns with t o t a l population exceeding
10,000 but l e s s than 30,000, with the exception of the Jewish communities of Yarmouth
in Nova Scotia and Noranda i n Quebec, i n which the t o t a l population ranged from
8,100 to 9,700.
There were no Jewish communities with a t l e a s t 35 Jewish inhabitants
or 10 Jewish f a m i l i e s i n the v i l l a g e s or hamlets with t o t a l population l e s s than 1,000.
The t o t a l urban population of Canada increased by 31*8 p e r c e n t i n the
decade from 1914-1 to 1951 while the urban Jewish population i n Canada increased by only
23.5 percent during the same period.
Seven of the 56 c i t i e s and towns i n Canada with Jewish population
exceeding 100 i n 1951 were suburbs forming p a r t of the metropolitan area of other
c i t i e s . I f we regard those suburbs as i n t e g r a l p o r t i o n s of the l a r g e r Jewish community i n t h a t metropolitan a r e a , the number of Jewish communities with Jewish popu l a t i o n exceeding 100 i s reduced to 149.
As may be seen from Table 3, the Jewish population i n 114 of those
149 Jewish communities decreased during the decade from 19141 t o 1951, and increased
i n 35 of them.
The greatest decrease, amounting to more than 140 percent, occurred
i n the gold mining town of Kirkland Lake i n Northern Ontario. The g r e a t e s t p e r c e n t age increase took place i n the comparatively small communities of S t . Agathe des
Momts i n Quebec, a holiday r e s o r t some 69 miles north-west of Montreal, and im
Peterborough, i n Ontario, approximately 76 miles e a s t of Toronto. The g r e a t e s t p e r centage increase i n any of the l a r g e r Jewish communities with Jewish population
exceeding 1,000 i n 19141 took place im Metropolitan Vancouver, which showed an
increase of 933 ־percent i n the decade from I9I4I to 1951 as compared with an increase
of 27014 percent during the same period im Metropolitan Montreal and Toronto.
