The Trumpet Winter 2013 Mission Statement: The Literacy Center is dedicated to improving basic adult literacy in our community. National World Read Aloud Day is March 6th. Celebrate by reading aloud to a child or volunteering for a story time at your closest library. By: Scott Saalman From a bare SCRABBLE board, beauty blooms. I love how different the board looks after each completed game, the varied ways the lettered tiles branch out from the initial center word and fill the 225-spaced game grid like oil on canvas. Sometimes the letters lay thickest at the bottom half of the board, sometimes at the top half. Sometimes the board favors the left side, sometimes the right. Sometimes there is an even distribution so that all eight triple-word squares are put to good use. Like a snowflake, each finished board possesses its own, unique design. It is word art at our fingertips, a game of pinches—the masterpiece of board games. I have one problem with SCRABBLE: I’m in a slump. Dad has schooled me nine games straight—me, his first-born son, his SCRABBLE teacher. Rarely now will a game occur without him achieving a bingo. He became obsessed with SCRABBLE, his appetite so monstrous that, as his creator, I proudly nicknamed him SCRABBLE-stein. Our games became tighter until one day he beat me. I wasn’t worried. I figured such a feat would be a rare repeat. Soon, though, it became a toss-up on who would win. We play each other tightly, each patiently waiting for the other to crack in our father-son battle of wits. Seldom does a game end without it being a seesaw battle throughout. There’s no better feeling than to chalk up a come-from-behind victory on the last turn with a seven-letter word. We’ve done that to each other many times. Neither of us gives up, ever. We both love the rattlesnake sound of a full bag of SCRABBLE tiles shaken at a game’s start, the From me, he learned about the sacredness of the two blank tiles. The More You Know by: Courtney Keating, Education Coordinator Nelson Mandela said that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” How very true that statement is. As the new Education Coordinator at The Literacy Center, I find Mr. Mandela’s words to be an inspiration every day. My name is Courtney Keating. I am a recent graduate of Ashford University with a Bachelor’s degree in history. I suppose I ended up being a student of history because I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I never really knew, which would frustrate my school counselors! When they would ask me what I wanted to do, I would just say that I want to make a difference in the world. Each morning, when I open the door to my office, my childhood dream is not lost. I realize every single moment how lucky I am to have the opportunity to bring a positive change in our community. The Literacy Center’s students strive everyday to reach their goals. These goals range from getting their GED and starting college courses to being able to explore the won- derful world of books without reading help from friends or family. To our students, there is no goal too small or too great. And, as adult educators, it is our duty to realize this and work just as hard as our students to help them achieve their goal, because their success is our success. Not just ours, as individuals, but as a community and society as a whole. My door is always open for our dedicated volunteers and students. I can be reached by phone at 429-1222 or by email at [email protected]. Please, feel free to stop by, call, or write a note with any questions you may have. I look forward to working with each of you to better the world we inhabit. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ~Nelson Mandela 3501 First Avenue Evansville, IN 47710 812-429-1222 www.litcenter.org NONPROFIT ORG US POSTAGE PAID EVANSVILLE, IN PERMIT NO. 1054 2012-2013 Board Members Lori Saxby, Chair Nan Benedict, Vice-Chair Kate Sherrill, Secretary Liz Walker, Treasurer Suzanne Bias Jennifer Briggs Katy Dunigan Lamont Ellison Rachel Nadeau Stacy Newton Ethel Taylor Staff Executive Director Jennifer Wigginton Education Coordinator Courtney Keating Return Service Requested The Literacy Center Wish List Postage Stamps i-Pad Pencils Wall Clock AA Batteries Lysol & Antibacterial Wipes Ink Cartridges: HP27 & 28, Epson 40120 Paper Hanging Files– Blue, Red, Green, Yellow Projector T H I S C O U LD B E Y OU R L A S T I S S U E ! _______Yes, I want to continue receiving The Trumpet newsletter! □ Print format □ Electronic format (email) _______Please accept my donation of $______________ (your employer may match this) Name/Organization: ________________________________________________ Address:___________________________________________________________ City/State_________________Zip:_____________________________________ E-mail: __________________________ Phone: __________________________ If you can donate items from our Wish List, please call 429-1222 or stop by the office at 3411 A First Ave. Please complete and return this form to: The Literacy Center 3501 First Ave. Evansville, IN 47710 To renew by phone or email: 812.429.1222 or [email protected]
