September Problem of the Month
Master logicians ambush a college and capture three men. The logicians give the men a single chance to
escape. The captives are lined up in order of height, and are tied to stakes. The man in the rear can see the
backs of his two friends, the man in the middle can see the back the man in front, and the man in front cannot
see anyone. The logicians show the men five hats. Three of the hats are black and two of the hats are white.
Blindfolds are then placed over each man's eyes and a hat is placed on each man's head. The two hats left
over are hidden. The blindfolds are then removed and it is said to the men that if one of them can guess what
color hat he is wearing they can all leave unharmed. The man in the rear who can see both of his friends' hats
but not his own says, "I don't know". The middle man who can see the hat of the man in front, but not his own
says, "I don't know". The front man who cannot see ANYBODY'S hat says "I know!" How did he know the color
of his hat and what color was it?
Solution:
The man in front knew he was wearing a black hat because he knew the first man did not see two white hats
and he knew that the second man did not see one white hat because if he saw a white hat, the second man
would have known that his hat was black from hearing the first man's statement.
Technology Education Department News…
Heather Gilpatrick and Dan Takita, two of Mr Rose’s top CAD students are working closely with Mr Dave
Fontes, the districts facility manager, to create drawings of many of the high schools rooms and gathering
spaces. These drawings are going to be used to help aid the Burrillville Fire and Police departments as well as
the community for future gatherings and events held on campus.
The technology club has begun meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the c-wing. The club will be working on
acquiring basic homeowner/handyman skills including some basic plumbing and house wiring. They have
already successfully diagnosed and repaired an electric space heater for office use and a pug mill for
reconditioning clay in the art dept. The club hopes to provide skills and experiences that many interested
“tinkerers” don’t have time for during the school day or that are no longer provided for in the Tech-Ed curricula.
54 Woodworking and CAD students have received their official NCCER (National Center for Construction
Education and Research) transcripts. Mr. Rose in conjunction with the Associated Builders & Contractors of
Rhode Island have provided our students with this competitive dge in the construction field as well as college,
when they leave Burrillville High School. If you know of a recent graduate of BHS that was passed either the
Woodworking or CAD course have them contact Mr. Rose (568-1310 or [email protected]) to make
arrangements to pick their NCCER transcript & ID. Card. For more information on NCCER please visit

Music Department News…
BHS Musicians Help Celebrate Dr. Palotta’s Recent Honor
It was recently announced that our own Dr. Palotta, Superintendent of the Burrillville school district, was named
Rhode Island Superintendent of the Year. The School Committee organized a special tribute to him at the
opening of their September meeting in which the BHS musicians were invited to participate. Just prior to the
start of the meeting, the members of the BHS Wind Ensemble lined up in the auditorium lobby and treated Dr.
Palotta and the rest of the guests to a medley of John Philip Sousa marches. After marching into the
auditorium, the meeting was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Alex LeClair. The Select
Choir then led those gathered together in the singing of the National Anthem. The musical tribute ended with
the BHS Wind Ensemble and Select Choir serenading our good doctor with a special rendition of the school
fight song. The rewritten lyrics were:
Give us three cheers for Dr. Palotta!
Give us three cheers for Dr. Palotta!
The Broncos think that you’re so great,
That’s why you’re number 1 in the state!
Some ask why we are cheering so loud
You’re top in the state and we’re very proud.
So now we’re cheering “Job Well Done!”
We know why you’re number 1!

BHS Bronco Wind Ensemble Select Next Drum Majors
Prior to the first home football game, current
senior Drum Majors Rebecca Hudon and
Juliette Latendresse conducted auditions for
their successors. Interested students attended
several Drum Major workshops to learn the
commands and maneuvers that they would have
to perform for the audition. Although Rebecca
and Julie make it look easy, the job is extremely
demanding and requires great attention to detail.
Special thanks go to all the students who
auditioned but congratulations go to Junior
Jeremie Harnois and Sophomore Anna Pacheco
for their selection as next year’s Drum Majors!
First Home Football Game Starts the Season off Right
The Wind Ensemble played during the
first home football game on Saturday,
September 22nd against Narragansett
High School. Although the weather was
just shy of being inclement, the sun
soon poked through the clouds and
revealed a beautiful autumn morning.
The group received several
compliments from our fans and those
from Narragansett as well as the
principal from Cranston East High
School. The could also be seen (only
for a second or two) on the 6:00 and
11:00 news on Channel 10.
What a great way to start football
season off right!

Social Studies Department News…
The Social Studies department is off to a great start this
year with several events that have already occurred and
several upcoming events to look forward to. Friday,
September14th was a busy day within our department.
Valerie Demarco hosted the Rhode Island League of
Women Voters to aide in the voter registration process.
This was an important first time event for any student about
to turn 18, and embark on the lifelong experience of voting.
This was also an excellent hands-on activity for Mrs.
Demarco’s American Government class, which was the
hosting class for this event. This voter registration drive
occurred during all of period 5 in the Media Center, so all
eligible students had access. With announcements of the
event’s occurrence starting a week in advance, Mrs. Demarco was able to sign up over 25 students. As a
follow up to these efforts Mrs. Demarco plans on using a $350 grant she also received from the League to fund
a state house field trip, thereby completing the circle of knowledge associated with registering to vote.
Also, on Friday the 14th Mr. Sheehan’s and Mr. Siner’s classes received a
speaker from the Federal Air Marshall Service. All types of 9-11 topics were
covered from security improvements, to international air security, to cooperation
amongst nations to combat terror. Student engagement levels were high and
much was gleaned through this day long presentation.
On Monday September 17, the social studies department received Mrs. Carolyn A. Mannis Esq. as a guest
speaker to our school. Mrs. Mannis a private practice lawyer, who focuses on Constitutional issues as her
area of specialty, is a volunteer pro bono lawyer for the ACLU, as well as a previous student here at the
Burrillville High School. Through the efforts of Mr. Sheehan, the entire department was able to participate in a
day long speaking event hosted in the library as our recognition of Constitution Day.

On Friday September 28, students will be attending a Civil War symposium entitled “America’s Bloodiest Day:
Antietam, Emancipation, and Memorialization”
held at Rhode Island College for high school
students. Through Ms. Lamontagne’s US History
II EEP course, initial contact was made by
Professor Karl Benzinger, the cooperating
professor for our EEP history course. Through
departmental consensus and discussion, it was
decided it would be a departmental wide field trip
with a full complement of five department
members attending and three busloads of
students. While we know who won the Civil War,
this trip should be a win for all parties involved! A
special thank you goes out to Ms. Carlton and Mr.
Ferraro. Through their awareness and interest in
students, they were able to assist in making this
trip a no cost field trip for all students going. Very
helpful indeed.
More to come from the Social Studies Department
in October for sure.
Freshmen Team News…
The Freshman Team has been off to a busy start of the school year. Here’s a quick recap of September’s
activities.
In science students on the freshman team have been studying Earth science topics through the process of a
geologist. Topics have included: the structure of earth, rocks, and plate tectonics. Students are currently
working on constructing a 3-dimensional model of the earth.
In history, students closed out September with a test on the “Roots of Terrorism” unit. Students will now turn
their attention a unit focusing on the origins of man and the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages.
In math, students began their yearlong focus on problem solving as well as
addressing mathematical issues that the students may have had (such as
signed numbers, fractions, and word problems).
In English students have been reviewing the eight parts of speech. Students
have also been working on their first major essay dealing with an
informational text about behavioral modification schools.
Finally, on September 28 the entire Freshman Team assembled for a
ceremony to honor the 2012-13 school year’s first Freshman Team Student
of the Month recipient. This award is for the student who earns generally
good grades, but also works hard, participates in class, and sets a positive
example for his/her classmates. The award for September 2012 was
presented to Leah Turner! Congratulations, Leah, and keep up your fantastic
work!

Great start to the new school year. Many student activities are taking place and many more are in planning. On
September 27th, 33 Science and Academy students, along with 3 staff members, attended the 8th Annual
Aviation Education Exposition at T F Green Airport in Warwick. Students were given the opportunity to tour and
board various aircraft and airport equipment along with conversing with airport personnel and institutions of
post-secondary learning connected with aviation and related fields.
October will feature trips to New England Tech and General Dynamics at Quonset Point, along with career
presentations by Lincoln Tech and others at BHS.

DIGITAL PORTFOLIO UPDATE
It’s hard to believe that we are already several weeks into a new school year!
Before too much time passes, it is a good idea for students and parents to familiarize
themselves with the BHS Digital Portfolio system. Here are a few reminders that will help to ensure that your
student is primed for portfolio success:
Students at BHS complete their online portfolios during their senior year. A complete portfolio shows
that the BHS student has mastered all 15 of the school’s 21st century learning expectations. These
expectations include problem solving, communication, personal and social responsibility, and
technological competence.
To keep on track toward completing their portfolios, BHS juniors should have 12 portfolio expectations
complete by the end of their junior year, while sophomores should have 8, and freshmen 4. Students
not on track with their portfolios may be placed on social suspension.
All BHS students are responsible for maintaining an Individual Learning Plan, or ILP. Maintenance of
the ILP fulfills one of the BHS learning expectations and can provide assistance to students as they
develop post-secondary plans. ILPs are maintained through WayToGoRI.org.
With the arrival of October, students can expect to be receiving their first common tasks of the year
very soon. Common tasks form the backbone of a BHS portfolio. Therefore, it is extremely important
that students earn proficient scores on their common tasks. Only tasks that receive scores of 3 or
higher are considered portfolio worthy. Students who fail to achieve proficiency are strongly
encouraged to revise their work and improve their scores!
The senior portfolio presentation schedule will be released soon. Presentations will begin at the start of
second semester.
Finally, parents and students are reminded that any portfolio related questions should be directed to Mr.
Goodwin, BHS graduation requirements coordinator, at [email protected].

BHS Theater goes to BROADWAY!
This fall, students who are currently enrolled in a theater course at
BHS, have taken a theater course in the past, or are members of the
Drama Club are planning a trip to New York City. The trip will take
them first to the Sony Wonder Technology Lab, where students will be
able to try their hands at virtual surgeries using nanotechnology,
create and manipulate photos of each other, use motion-capture
technology to create and animate their own creature, and take part in a virtual newscast, complete with cameras
and special effects.
Once their time is complete at the lab, they’ll travel with their group
through New York City, past Rockefeller Plaza and the famous tree
towards Times Square to see the Tony Award-Winning production of
Peter and the Starcatcher. This comedy was nominated for 9 Tony
Awards, winning 5 of them at this year’s ceremony. Following the
show, the Burrillville students will have an exclusive talk-back with the
cast and crew of the show, giving them a chance to speak with the
actors and technicians about their audition and rehearsal process as
well as question them about
life in the theater.
Students have until Friday, November 2nd to return their permission slips
and $105 to either Mrs. Blissmer (in B12) or Ms. Fleming (in B19). Any
students who are interested in attending this trip must qualify as a theater
student, and if there are any financial difficulties, please contact either
teacher. The chaperones reserve the right to limit attendees based on
academic eligibility, behavior, and absences of each student. There are
only 50 seats available, and spots will be given on a first-come, first-served
basis. We hope it will be a trip the students will never forget!
News from the Nurse’s Office
Season Flu Vaccine
This is an important reminder from Burrillville High School and the Rhode Island Department of Health
regarding the season flu vaccine. A vaccination clinic will be held for our students at the Burrillville High School
Cafeteria on October 25 at 7:30 a.m. You may register online at www.thewellcomp.com/school and the form
will be sent directly to the clinic or simply fill out the consent form you received in the mail and return it to the
school nurse teacher no later that two weeks prior to the event.
Getting your child vaccinated during the school day is the most convenient way to protect them. There is no
out-of-pocket cost for ANY child regardless of whether or not they have health insurance.

We know how overwhelming it can be for kids to change schools. To assist in
this transition we are again offering newcomers groups for students during the
school day to orient them to what BHS has to offer. If you signed the newcomers
permission form in your enrollment packet, your son/daughter will have a chance
to speak to one of us and may be eligible to participate in a group, as available.
ATTENTION PARENTS OF NEW STUDENTS  We are hosting new (to BHS)
parent informational sessions this fall. You will have your choice of a
breakfast hour in the morning or a coffee hour in the evening. The dates
will be announced soon – a letter will be sent home with your son/daughter
and invitations will also be mailed. We hope that one of the sessions offered
will fit into your schedule, and that you will consider joining us to learn what BHS
is all about and how you can ensure your child makes a smooth transition to

*A Special Thank You: We would like to acknowledge the Burrillville Schools
Alumni Education Foundation, Inc. (BSAEF), as they have made these parent
information sessions possible through grant funding. We truly appreciate their
generosity in helping to fund our program so that we could expand it two years
ago to include this very important component. Thank you, BSAEF!
