DATES TO REMEMBER
Music Monday
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we enjoy the beautiful spring weather, please take the time to remind your child(ren)
of the safety rules when walking or biking to school. Students are reminded not to walk
or run through the parking lot to ensure the safety of everyone. Thank you to all of the
students who remembered that scooters and bikes must be walked on and off the
property. It is also a good time to remind everyone about our Dress Code here at
Westmount. The Dress Code can be found in the student planner. Please take a moment
to review the guidelines to ensure that all students are appropriately dressed and
wearing shoes that allow for full participation and safe play.

take place from May 27th – May 29th. Students in Grade 3 will complete the

Celebrating Earth Day at Westmount
On April 22nd at 2:22 p.m., all of the Westmount students helped to do their part in cleaning up the environment! We had a schoolwide yard clean-up and did our part to make our school yard and surrounding area a cleaner place. The weather was beautiful and
everyone enjoyed the time outdoors! The photos below show students collecting garbage and helping to clean up our environment!
Special thanks to Mrs. Ring and M. Mounin for organizing this great event!
Westmount Dance-A-Thon
Students from Westmount celebrated the end of their Dance Units
in Phys. Ed by participating in a “Westmount Dance-A-Thon” that
was organized by Mr. Dickie, Ms. Bednarek and Mrs. Sararus.
Students had a great time dancing with their friends while raising
money for activities and events here at Westmount. After all of
the donations are totaled, students raised over $2000.00! Wow! A
huge thank you to all of the students, families and Westmount
community for their generous donations!

Spring Running Club
Spring running club is coming in May! Westmount P.S. will, once again, join
the Run for Life Km program, a program through the Run for Life
Organization, providing students the opportunity to participate in an
organized running club. Run for Life is a non-profit organization that
develops and strengthens running and walking programs for students in
Canada and around the world. Westmount Public School has been involved
with this organization for many years and hundreds of students have
benefitted both physically and mentally from this program.
Check out their website: www.runforlife.ca
This training helps in preparing students for Track and Field, as well as,
increases their fitness levels. In addition, our runners will be able to
participate in the Run for Life celebration on Friday June 7th at Galt
Collegiate.
All students from Grade 3-6 are invited to join. In order to run, students
MUST wear appropriate running clothing. This includes; proper running
shoes, sport socks, athletic shorts or track pants and a t-shirt. Students are
also encouraged to bring a water bottle and wear a hat. We run rain or shine
so runners must be prepared for all different types of weather.
Like many sports, running is an activity that becomes easier with practice.
Therefore, attendance and commitment to the program are both very
important. Students are expected to be properly dressed, on-time,
demonstrate good behaviour both in-class and at running events and also be
dedicated to their studies. This program helps develop the whole child.
Mme McTavish and Mrs. MacDonald are looking forward to another great
season of exercise and fun!
Westmount Receives a Generous Grant from the Rotary Club of Kitchener!
THANK YOU to the Rotary Club of Kitchener Grand River for supporting Westmount P.S. with the school’s literacy
initiatives through their very generous grant of $2500. This money will be used to support and enhance literacy across the
curriculum and grades, including Science, Social Studies, Math, Home Reading and Language Arts. Westmount students and
families will benefit from the additional books (including dual language), resources and software materials to complement
curricula. The school will be recognized at the Rotary Club of Kitchener Grand River’s annual Recognition Celebration on
Tuesday May 28th at the Walper Terrace Hotel Ballroom.
EQAO Assessment
EQAO assessments:






provide a snapshot of your child’s achievement based on a six-hour test;
are given at the end of key stages in a child’s education;
are administered, scored and reported on in a consistent and objective manner;
assess only your child’s performance on a particular test;
have no subjective component that might affect your child’s score and
generate results that provide students, parents, teachers and the public with a “big picture” snapshot
of students’ learning at the time of the assessment.
When students write an EQAO test, they’re being measured on the same skills and answering the same
questions as every other student in the province.
The tests are scored “blindly,” meaning the scorer doesn’t know who a student is, which school a student
attends or where in Ontario a student resides. This ensures that the assessment results are objective and
not affected by any biases—unintentional or otherwise—on the part of the scorers.
