Ice Safety Tips
•Check ice conditions! Check ice conditions in
advance, to bring proper gear. Typically 4 inches of
good, hard ice is required to support an individual.
6 inches is required to support an ATV or snow
machine.
•Keep in mind that it is very common for ice depth to
be highly variable on a given reservoir and from one
reservoir to another.
•Snow can be heavy, as well as have an insulating
effect, so don’t assume snow covered ice is safe ice.
•Carry a 20-30 foot rope as a precaution in case
someone falls through the ice. Hand held ice picks
attached to rope and strung through the arms of a
jacket can be readily available and potentially helpful •Booming and cracking ice isn’t necessarily dangerous.
to an angler climbing out of a hole onto the ice.
It only means that the ice is expanding and contracting
as the temperature changes.
•It is against the law to cut holes in the ice greater than
10 inches in diameter—except when dip netting for
Cisco on Bear Lake. Holes in the ice can take time to
freeze over, or can become disguised by snow cover,
presenting hazards to unsuspecting anglers who can
fall through.
•Dress for the weather. Wear layers, and don’t forget
to drink lots of fluids. Beverages that contain alcohol
increase the onset of hypothermia.
Family Fishing Waters
(indicated by NOTE 6 in table above)
Family fishing waters provide
simplified rules and great fishing
opportunities for families and
first-time anglers.
