Elements, Mixtures, and Compounds Vocab List
Element---a substance made of only 1 type of atom. Pure substance that cannot
be broken down into any substance.
Mixture---combining 2 or more substances. Not chemically combined.
They are physically combined.
Compound—combining 2 or more elements in a chemical way. Makes new
substance with new properties or characteristics.
NAMING COMPOUNDS
Common name-- generic name given to a compound. Sometimes it is the
company name. (sugar, salt, bleach, tums, windex, tylenol)
Chemical name—name for a compound that includes the element names with
specific prefixes or suffixes. (Carbon Dioxide) ( Methane)
(Calcium Carbonate)
Molecular name---name of a compound written with element’s chemical
symbols with subscript.(H O) (CO ) (NaCl) (CH )(CaCO )
States of matter
Solid—state of matter with definite volume and definite shape
Liquid—state of matter with definite volume but not a definite shape. It takes
the shape of its container.
Gas—state of matter with no definite volume or no definite shape. Volume
changes with temperature and pressure. It takes the shape of its container.
