Our Tea Menu
Tea in the UK is enjoying an unprecedented revival!
Not only are people more aware of the many health benefits
associated with tea drinking, but they are also excited by the
variety of flavours and aromas available.
The cultivation of the tea plant (Camellia Sinensis) is as interesting
and complex as wine manufacture; and there are teas produced to suit all
occasions, palates and types of foods. Our most popular tea is, of course, the
traditional (and delicious) English Breakfast – but we hope you will take time to
read about the other teas on offer and maybe try something new!
We have grouped our tea list into a commonly used categorization depending on level
of oxidation (also known as fermentation). Black Tea is made from leaves that have
been fully oxidized – this changes the colour of leaves from green to brown and also
produces the deep rich and robust flavour. Oolong is a semi fermented tea where the
fermentation process is stopped before the leaves begin to change colour. Green Tea
is steamed, baked or pan fried to prevent oxidation and therefore the leaves remain
green. White Tea, like Green Tea, is also ‘unprocessed’, but is harvested before the
leaves are fully developed; the name derives from the fine silvery-white hairs on the
unopened buds of the tea plant. These buds and baby leaves are carefully gathered
and left to dry in the sun.
All our Assams, Ceylons and Darjeelings are Single Estate (which is a sign of purity)
although the particular Estate (or Garden) they come from may vary. They all have a
leaf grade which is denoted by initials after the name; if the part used is only the bud
and the two top leaves then the tea is described as Orange Pekoe – the grades then
rise to FTGFOP, or Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, the highest. Ceylons
use a truncated version of the same system.
The simple rule is that the more initials there are, the better the quality. The Assams
and Darjeelings we buy are very high grade leaf.
English Breakfast Tea for one £2.25
All Speciality Teas for one £2.55
Teas from our Premium Range Individually Priced
Our tea may vary according to availability so please ask!
English Breakfast Tea
£2.25
This is made up of a blend of teas from Assam (for its warm
malty body) and Sri Lanka (for its golden quality and
briskness). Traditionally taken with milk, this is the perfect
tea for breakfast. Firstly, the flavour and the high caffeine content
help start the day; secondly, tea helps emulsify fat, so it is ideal after
or with a meal. But, of course, it is great for any time of the day!
Speciality Teas
Black Tea £2.55
Earl Grey Blue Lady
A slight variation on the classic Earl Grey, this has a more pronounced bergamot
flavour, and small blue flowers have been added to the blend. Oil of bergamot is
extracted from the peel of the bergamot orange, a small pear shaped sour orange
which is cultivated today mostly in southern Italy. Earl Grey pairs well with cheese
sandwiches, or savouries and lemon cake.
Darjeeling FTGFOP
Tea from the Darjeeling area of north-east India is grown in the foothills of the
Himalayas; the combination of steep terrain, well-drained soil, extreme cold in winter
and intense heat in summer, good rainfall and clean mountain air produces tea of an
excellent ‘muscatel grape’ aroma that is often referred to as the ‘champagne’ of Indian
teas. Darjeeling tea goes well with cream cakes and scones!
Assam TGFOP
Assam is a vast and beautiful area of rolling hills and dense forest in Northern India. It
is a relatively low-lying area of tea production, but its high rainfall (up to 30 cm a day
in the rainy season) and extreme humidity provide excellent tea growing conditions.
Stronger and fuller bodied in flavour than Darjeeling teas, Assam is favoured by
those looking for a strong tea – and goes well with breads, pastries and preserves.
Ceylon BOP
Although Sri Lanka stopped being known as Ceylon some time ago, Ceylon is the
official and authorised trademark for Sri Lankan tea. This Broken Orange Pekoe
grade is strong, golden and smooth. This tea is perfect for those looking for the first
step on the road to exploring loose leaf teas and goes well with food.
Rose Congou
Congou teas all consist of carefully made, unbroken black leaf. This tea is blended
with dried pink rose petals to give a smooth, mellow aroma gently flavoured with
sweet roses.
Lapsang Souchong
Lapsang Souchong teas are a speciality of Fujian province in
China. The leaves are withered over cypress or pine wood
fires then pan-fried and rolled. They are then oxidised in
wooden barrels and hung in baskets over smoking pine wood
fires to dry. The result is intensely black leaves which make a dark
red liquour and a distinctive smoky flavour. It is the tea equivalent to
a smoky West Coast malt whisky! Lapsang is a good tea to accompany
salmon or turkey sandwiches.
Spicy Chai
A robust and full flavoured black tea blended with traditional Indian Masala spices
including cardamom, ginger, cloves, orange zest and black pepper. It is served with
hot milk and best enjoyed with sugar.
Mango Flavoured Tea
This fruity tea is a blend of black China tea, flower petals and natural flavourings.
Served with or without milk it makes an ideal afternoon drink.
Ginger Flavoured Tea
Pieces of ginger root have been blended with black China tea to provide a gentle but
interesting blend with a ginger ‘tingle’.
Vanilla Flavoured Tea
This black tea with vanilla is a very creamy and luxurious cup of tea – it has a delicious
natural sweetness and a great vanilla taste.
Lemon Flavoured Tea
Black China tea with natural lemon flavouring and lemon peel pieces. This is a clean,
crisp tea that is very popular. It can be served with either milk or a slice of lemon.
Oolong Tea
Finest Formosa Oolong
£2.55
Oolong tea originated in Taiwan (Formosa) and is known as a semi-fermented tea.
The leaves are crushed after picking to allow fermentation to start, then withered in
the sun or by pan firing to stop the process of oxidation. The result is a tea with a
sweet aromatic flavour which is very high in polyphenols (and low in caffeine) which
give the tea its antioxidant properties. This is a nice gentle tea for the afternoon.
Green Tea
£2.55
Sencha Lemon Sunrise
A fine Japanese Sencha tea, made from the first picking of
the leaves in spring. This is blended with lemon and lemon
grass to give a delicately sweet aroma and flavour of citrus that is
also reminiscent of freshly mown grass.
Bancha Green Tea
Bancha is also a Japanese green tea. It is made from the summer and autumn
picking of the leaves when the stalks and leaves of the plant are coarser. This
results in a stronger, less fragrant, more astringent flavour. The tea also has a high
fluoride content so is considered good for the health of the teeth.
Gunpowder
In the 18th and 19th centuries, tea clippers used to bring the UK’s supply of tea back
from the East. Tea was bulky but very light – and this Chinese tea was favoured by
exporters because the leaves are tightly rolled before drying, which gives it a high
density. The sailors thought the tea in pellet form looked like lead shot, and the
nickname ‘gunpowder’ became commonplace. This is a strong, robust green tea with
a lasting after-taste. It should be used sparingly as the leaves expand profusely - have
a look!
Jasmine Green Tea
This green tea is flavoured with jasmine flowers to give a pale amber liquor that is
light and fragrant. This is a lovely tea to have in the afternoon, as it has calming and
soothing properties.
Green menthos
Green gunpowder tea is blended with top grade American peppermint – the aromas
of which complement each other perfectly. This is a fabulous all-year-round drink,
combining the energizing flavour of the mint with the health properties of green tea.
White Tea
Pai-mu-tan (tea of life)
£2.55
From the Fujian province of China, this is tea in its most natural form – the leaves
are simply withered and dried in the sun. This tea gets its name from the fine silvery
white hairs on the unopened buds of the tea plant. The clear, pale infusion has a velvet
smooth, sweet and mild flavour with a hint of nuttiness. It is considered to be very
beneficial to health and is very cleansing after a meal.
Caffeine Free Tea £2.55
The drinks in this section are not really ‘teas’ but ‘infusions’
or ‘fruit tisanes’, because they are made from herbs, fruits or
the leaves of plants other than Camillia Sinsensis.
Camomile
Camomile has been used for centuries in Europe and Asia as a
natural way to aid relaxation and reduce stress. It is often served
with honey as a sweetener.
Peppermint
This is a light and refreshing drink that has long been used to help with digestion.
Kiwi and Strawberry
This is a lovely, fruity infusion containing dried strawberries, hibiscus, rosehips and
real kiwi pieces – and no artificial flavouring or additives.
Turkish Apple
The national drink of Turkey, this tisane – made with pieces of dried apple (but no
tea) - is fruity, tangy, and deliciously refreshing!
Honeybush
This is a wild plant that grows in Southern Africa. When cut and dried it has a sweet,
honey-like flavour that is widely enjoyed in South Africa. It is a light and gently
soothing infusion.
Rooibos Orange Ginger
This is an organic, Redbush tea which has had orange and ginger pieces added to it.
Not only is it naturally delicious, but it’s also very healthy, being caffeine and tannin
free.
Premium Tea
Ceylon Decaffeinated
£2.65
Rooibos Cinnamon Plum £2.65
This Ceylon Broken Orange Pekoe has been decaffeinated to enable caffeine sensitive
people to enjoy the flavour of real tea. This tea comes from Sri Lanka and is quite
strong and smooth. It is usually enjoyed with milk
This is made from the Rooibos (or Redbush) plant that also grows in Southern Africa
and is a naturally soothing drink which is sweet in taste. Cinnamon pieces and mallow
flowers have been added to make a tasty and refreshing brew that can be enjoyed all
year round.
Sencha and Ginseng £2.75
Nilgiri Thiashola £2.65
Pu Erh with Lime £2.65
Artisan or Blooming Teas £3.75
Mu Dan Tea Rose
£2.65
A combination of the delicious ‘grassiness’ of Japanese Sencha,
the citrus ‘zing’ of ginseng root and the natural sweetness of
passionflower. Not only is this a refreshing and energizing
brew, but the medicinal and rejuvenating powers of ginseng
have been known for centuries!
FTGFOP - Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe – these letters denote
tea of exceptionally high quality. It is grown in Southern india - in the Nilgiri
Hills (sometimes called the Blue hills as they are covered in a wild plant which only
flowers once every 7 years and when it does the hills are covered in Blue Blossoms.)
This tea is flavourful, bright and brisk – the perfect afternoon brew.
Puerh tea has been exclusive to China (Yunnan Province) for centuries, but it is
becoming more popular throughout the world because of its health benefits. Pu Erh
teas have a mature, earthy character and are said to be excellent for the digestion, as
well as helping to reduce cholesterol and aiding weight loss. This loose leaf Pu Erh has
an added citrus tang that makes it refreshing & invigorating.
During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) Chinese culture became fascinated by nature.
One offshoot of this interest was the development of Artisan teas (also known as
‘blooming’ or ‘treasure’ teas). They are made by carefully wrapping dried flowers
inside an outer layer of hand-sewn green tea leaves. The teas are served in a large wine
glass; as they slowly absorb water, the flower blossoms, filling the glass with colour,
perfume and beauty – this is tea as a work of art!
This tea rose is made of hand-picked green tea leaves, dried, pressed and sewn
together so that they look like petals. When the rose is brewed, the leaves open up
and look like a rose or peony. It’s very quaint – and the tea tastes good too! This tea
is served in a large wine glass.
