What is the How Hill Trust?
The How Hill Trust is a vibrant educational charity, established in 1984. It is based in the
landmark How Hill House, built in the Arts and Crafts style in 1904. The house commands
“the best view in the Broads” as it is located on a low hill overlooking beautiful gardens,
expansive marshes, historic windmills, the river Ant and mature woodlands. Barton Broad,
where Admiral Nelson reputedly learnt to sail, is a short boat trip away.
The Trust is renowned for its environmental education work with schoolchildren. Pupils stay
in the house virtually every academic week of the year and make full use of our unique
position in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. Activities include dyke dipping, orienteering,
thatching, boat trips, nature trails, environmental art, owl pellet dissection, weaving,
laboratory work, Toad Hole Cottage museum visit, food chain games, woodland study,
riddle trail, clay model making and many more. We are a totally independent charity.
All profits made from our courses and events support our education work.
Teachers: please contact Lizzy Ames, our Education Manager, to discuss
a visit – [email protected]

The Secret Garden
These hidden woodland gardens were established in the early 1920’s by the original owner
of How Hill House, Edward Thomas Boardman.
The azaleas and rhododendrons are especially spectacular during May and June, and in
October the autumn colours can be beautiful.
The secret gardens are now open every day and access is signposted via the wood at the
rear of How Hill House. A map and guide is available. Entry is free but donations to the
How Hill Trust charity are welcome.
If you would like to learn more about the history of the house and gardens, private tours
with the Trust Director and Head Gardener can be arranged.

50th Anniversary Appeal
How Hill is a fantastic place
which provides a unique
educational experience for
thousands of school children
each year. Since the centre
opened in 1966, many children’s
lifestyles have become increasingly
sedentary and screen-based
with limited time spent outside.
The Trust’s work offers children
opportunities to explore, enjoy and
understand natural environments
and wildlife - rain, mud and all.
These experiences are essential,
both for the children’s wellbeing
and to inspire the next generation
of conservationists.
The How Hill Trust is a small,
independent charity. The time
has come for repairs and
improvements to the house that
we simply cannot afford
by ourselves. We need £55,000
to renew the sedge ridge on the
thatched roof; like Buckingham
Palace our inefficient heating
system needs replacing (although
ours will cost £175,000) and
many other matters require
expenditure. Please visit
howhilltrust.org.uk/50appeal
for more details.
Join the Friends of How Hill
The Friends organise events
in and around How Hill to raise
funds for the How Hill Trust.
Throughout the year they put on
theatre events, lunches, dinners,
a craft fair, bridge day, charity
rides and more. They are an
independent charity with their
own committee, AGM and
newsletter, and they always
welcome new members.
Membership costs just £10
per year. Please contact Friends
Secretary Jeanne Flett on
01692 678560.
