NIDO’S NIGHT HELPS PONIES TAKE OPENER:
Behind a four-hit performance from Tomas Nido,
Binghamton won the series opener, 9-2, at Bowie
on Friday night. Nido finished the night 4-for-5
with four RBI and a home run. Four Rumble Ponies
collected multi-hit games, while the team garnered
14 totals hits. Donovan Hand tossed six innings of
one-run baseball to earn his second win of the
season.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Corey Oswalt toes
the rubber for the seventh time this season. The
righty last pitched on Saturday in a suspended
game against Akron. The six runs he allowed over
three innings will not count to his season stats
until the game is completed on July 17. In games
officially on his tab, the 23-year-old has allowed
just one earned run over his last 25.1 innings.
The 6th year pro has seen his ERA dip with each
start this season, now sitting at 2.04 - third in the
Eastern League. In addition, Oswalt’s 1.05 WHIP
ranks fifth in the league.
BOWIE STARTER: RHP Brandon Barker makes his
team-leading eighth start of the season, but has
only earned two decisions in 2017. On April 18,
Barker and the Baysox beat Richmond when the
right-hander tossed six shutout innings, while
striking out eight. Five days later, Barker was hit
with a loss at Harrisburg after pitching six frames,
allowing two earned runs. The 24-year old has
lasted six innings only three times, but has never
allowed more than four earned runs. Barker was
drafted in the 16th round by the Atlanta Braves in
2014, but was traded to the Orioles on May 23,
2016 in a deal that sent LHP Brian Matusz to the
Braves. This is Barker’s second Double-A season;
he posted a 12-10 mark with a 3.25 ERA in 25
starts last year.
LATE GAME LOCKDOWN: Friday’s win earned
Binghamton their 19th victory when leading after
five innings in 2017. The Ponies are the only team
in the Eastern League to remain undefeated with
an advantage after the fifth frame. Additionally, no
team has more wins than Binghamton in such
scenarios. Binghamton (16-0) is one of five teams
still undefeated with a lead after the eighth inning.
MAS NIDO: Rumble Ponies catcher Tomas Nido
became the second Binghamton bat to record a
four-hit game with his 4-for-5 performance on
Friday. Last season, Nido recorded just one four-hit
performance and it came on September 3rd, the
second-to-last game of the season.
UP NEXT: Binghamton and Bowie conclude their
three-game series on Sunday afternoon. Rumble
Ponies send RHP Casey Delgado to face Baysox
RHP John Mearns. First pitch from Prince George’s
Stadium is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
