FRANKE PARK NATURE TREK
The Franke Park Nature Trek is located in one of Fort Wayne’s
largest City Parks. It comprises over 500 acres of wooded, rolling
land in the northwest limits of the city. Of the total area, 80 acres
were a gift of J.B. Franke in 1921, and 54.5 acres were presented
to the city in 1952 by Fred B. Shoaff, President of the Board of
Park Commissioners. The remaining acreage was purchased by
the Park Board from 1929 to 1952.
Facilities in this park attract many thousand persons annually.
Having three pavilions, a children’s play ground, tennis courts, a
ball diamond, an archery range, horse shoe courts, picnic facilities, nature trails, a lake (no swimming), fishing, and a Children’s
Zoo, including a zoo railroad train, pony rides and a bridle path.
AFRICAN VELDT
The African Veldt Animal Building is at Franke Park. This
“super barn” was constructed by the Zoological Society at a cost
of about $75,000. It contains eleven stalls, each with an outside
exercise yard. Many of the animals to be exhibited on the veldt will
find shelter and warmth in this heated enclosure during the off
season.
Remember, all the African animals will be kept as adults with
the hope that they will propagate and the sale of the youngsters
will generate important zoo revenue in future years, in addition to
making a significant contribution to the conservation of the species.
The stalls vary in size from 10’ x 12’ to 20’ x 24’. The vary high
section is for giraffes and allows 20’ of clear span headroom. A
hay and storage loft covers the remaining area. All stalls have
electrically operated doors.
Strauss Associates are responsible for the excellent architecture and Borkholder Builders for the construction.
unit is on its Scout’s Honor to complete this requirement. We
suggest a litter bag for each patrol, making a contest for each
patrol. Please place litter in the trash barrels placed throughout
the park. LET’S MAKE FRANKE PARK A SCOUT CLEAN PARK.

All hikers that complete the trail are entitled to wear the
FRANKE PARK TREK PATCH as shown on the front cover. See
