Ben Simmons Winning an under 14 premiership with Nunawading Vikings Basketball Club. 2|Page UNIFORM EXCHANGE PROGRAM Several years ago the committee made the decision to move to reversible shirts and today half of our players have reversible and the other half have the older shirts. Obviously unless all players on a team have the new reversible shirts then nobody can use the reversible shirts in that team. The last committee made the decision to fund the completion of this project and take the older shirts out of circulation so that our teams can actually start to use the reversible shirts that were initially rolled out a couple of years ago. There are a number of benefits to our club and our teams in completing this uniform roll out. Firstly, the significant costs of maintaining and cleaning the black & white tops when Nunawading teams play each other are removed - as well as the logistics of making sure those tops are available for those games in sufficient quantities. But more importantly, when we play teams with similar colours such as Eltham or Balwyn we can reverse our tops and make it easier on our players to determine who they should be passing to. At the start of May this year we rolled out the program and asked people to order the shirts they required, free of charge. We notified them again at the end of May. We have followed up again with emails to coaches and team managers to ask them to ensure that every player in every team (EDJBA, MEBA & GEBC) will have a new shirt. We have orders in with the supplier for more than 500 shirts and we anticipate receiving these shirts on July 20th. If just one player does not have a reversible shirt, then the whole team cannot use the reversible shirts. Therefore, once this program is complete it will be mandatory that all NVBC players will be wearing new Uniforms on court from August 6th. 3|Page We will be in touch with team managers and coaches after the arrival of the new shirts to coordinate the swap of the old shirt for the new shirt. The old shirt must be provided to collect the new shirt as the intent is to take the old shirts out of circulation. STATE SELECTION FOR SUPER COOPER Emerging Under 14 sensation Cooper Ferdinando has solidified his reputation as a star of the future with selection to the School Sport Victoria (SSV) 12 and Under State Team. The Year 7 Student at Emmaus College is just one of 10 players selected from Victoria to take part in the School Sport Australia Australian Basketball Championships to be held at Terrigal, New South Wales from 6 to 12 August, 2016. Ferdinando joins fellow Vikings Jacob Epperson and Jack Roberts at the Championships who were selected into the SSV 18 and Under Boys team. Another Vike, Matt Day was also selected but withdrew to focus on his Year 12 studies. We caught up with Cooper late last week to discuss the selection. Blackburn Vikings: Congrats on being selected to the SSV 12 and Under team, is this a career highlight for you? Cooper Ferdinando: Definitely the biggest highlight so far. BV: What other career highlights would be in there? CF: Making the ones as a double bottom aged Under 12 and making the VC Reserve Grand Final against Knox last year. BV: What made you first start playing basketball? CF: I Started playing when I was 6 in NV domestic and progressed to rep basketball when I was 7. BV: What’s your favourite part about playing basketball? CF: Well I really like to win, but I like to get other people involved and make them better with my passing. 6|Page BV: Your team narrowly missed VC this season, how are you on track to win VJL1? CF: We have a few injuries at the moment, but we are still on top of the ladder so hopefully we can still win it! BV: Are you playing any other sports? CF: Yeah I also play footy for Surrey Park and was the league Best and Fairest in 2014. I also tried out for the SSV Football team too. BV: So making the team must been difficult, what is your workload like? CF: Every single day of the week of I have basketball or football and there are a couple of days I’m doing two sessions. I’m also coaching my sister’s Under 9s team! BV: So if you had the choice of playing of AFL or NBL what would be your preference? CF: I’m not sure but I am leaning towards Basketball. If I could play in the NBA or for Australia in the Olympics I wouldn’t have to think twice. BV: So is that your ultimate basketball goal? CF: Yes, I would love to play in the NBA or for Australia at the Olympics. BV: Do you want to thank anyone? CF: I want to thank my first rep coach Ross Borthwick who taught me how to play, and my best friend from Primary School, Ethan Reid who got me into playing, and of course my family. BV: Did you have any other idols? CF: I would say Kevin Durant, but not anymore! Probably Russell Westbrook and Ben Simmons because he is Australian and a local boy. 7|Page BV: What are you expectations for the carnival? CF: I want to win gold, that’s the main thing. Being from Victoria we have a strong team and will hopefully go close. BV: Thanks for your time Cooper we look forward to watching your progress not only at the Championships but over the next few years of your career! 8|Page GREAT NEWS STORY Hi John, a girl from my under 13 nv1 team, Jamie Messenger took full advantage of the change to the three point rule in last week’s game and made two from two, 3 point swishes. GREATER EASTERN BASKETBALL CONFERENCE (GEBC) This current winter season marked a first for Nunawading Vikings to participate in the Greater Eastern Basketball Conference (GEBC). The GEBC is the Saturday competition run by the Melbourne East Basketball Association (MEBA), home of the Nunawading Spectres. We have surveyed parents of players in this competition to measure what the experience has been like and the results have been confirmed that this was a good option for Nunawading Vikings to offer our players. For those players that have joined the Nunawading Spectres representative programmes they no longer have to leave the Nunawading Vikings to fulfil their domestic obligations when playing mid-week is not an option. But for the most part players joining the GEBC competition do so for convenience. The experience has been that most games have been locally held, with many teams having 80% of their games at Laburnum and the others at close by venues. The majority of games have been held within a constant window of several hours each week for each age group which has given families more control of their Saturdays. Families cite the convenience of local games and regular times as the primary draw cards for competing in GEBC. The overwhelming majority of parents told us that they have been very pleased with their decision to join the GEBC this season and encouraged us to offer GEBC to our members again for the upcoming summer season. 14 | P a g e We only had 4 teams in GEBC this season, but we’d like to see if we can get 15 teams in the summer season – summer is after all a bigger basketball season than winter, and with the pioneering efforts of our 4 initial teams we are hopeful this is not too ambitious a target. If you would like to know more about the GEBC then please contact our Secretary, Stephen Crampton LAST SUMMER SEASON RESULTS FROM EDJBA Some great results and good to have so many teams make it in to Grand Finals! We alternate our age groups from evens (Under 8's to Under 20's) to odds (Under 9's to Under 19's) for the following reasons: 1. FAIRNESS AND SPREADING OPPORTUNITIES There has been research that has demonstrated the considerable advantage of being born early in the year "top age" for elite playing levels such as state teams and VC teams in the VJBL competition. This advantage goes down the line to all Saturday Domestic levels as well. If we did not vary our cut-off dates for age, then you may go through your playing career either always being "top" age or always being "bottom" age. 17 | P a g e The maturity that comes with age is very important in determining on-court performance. When players have that maturity it gives them confidence which can carry over many seasons. In order to give all players the opportunity of being "top age" we vary our cut-off dates so that over a two season period every player has the opportunity of being both "top" and "bottom" age. When "top" age you are likely to have the reward of either playing in a higher grade than usual or being the stronger player in their team. When "bottom" age you usually have to battle harder to achieve your accustomed degree of success, ultimately providing you with determination and an understanding that you have to work hard to improve. 2. VARIETY IN COMPETITION If the cut-off date did not alter between Winter and Summer seasons, then there would be a lot of repetition between two consecutive seasons. While there is no doubt there will be some adjustment of teams with individual players coming in and out, overall the structures of the teams are likely to stay the same. This can result in the same teams continually playing against each other as they move through the competition. If this was to occur, the competition would become stale. 3. EXPANDING PLAYERS' ASSOCIATION WITH OTHER PLAYERS If the cut-off dates did not alter then players would play with the same core group of people strictly within their own age. By alternating the cut-off we are helping to expand a player's friendships especially with older or younger players who they may not have crossed paths with otherwise. 18 | P a g e Although alternating age cut-offs means that certain "custom" made teams will be split up, the EDJBA believes the benefits outlined far outweigh this situation. Clubs or teams playing a player or players under false names shall lose all premiership points for that game and shall be reported to the Committee for further action. 20 | P a g e ZONE RULING NO ZONE DEFENCE TO BE PLAYED IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE GAME FOR U12 AND YOUNGER AGE GROUPS. The only exception is when a team has no substitutions for the game or the mercy rule is in play. Definition of zone defence: Any defence played in the half court which does not incorporate normal man to man principles shall be considered a zone. Penalty for not adhering to this rule: first instance is a warning to offending coach. Following warning, if coach refuses to adhere to the rule a bench technical is to be awarded against the offending team. MERCY RULING NO MERCY RULE DURING GRADING AND FINALS GAMES What is a Mercy Rule? A Mercy Rule is defensive restriction, helping to promote sportsmanship in junior basketball. In simple terms, the defence is required to drop back to within the 3pt line, when under 8’s, 10’s & 12’s are 15 or more points in front and under 14 and higher are 20 points in front. FORMAL WORDING: This rule shall apply to all games except grading games and finals. It shall apply to all age groups whenever one team has a lead of 15 points or more for under 8’s, 10’s & 12’s and 20 points for under 14 and higher. The rule shall require the team in the lead to retreat behind the three point line, in defence, whenever the opposition gain possession, from an inbound or field play. It is strongly advised that the leading team plays a man to man defence inside the three point line, not a zone. 21 | P a g e The penalty for the infringement of the mercy rule shall be calling a violation on the offending team and returning the ball to the other team at the three point line extended, in the front court. Should any losing team seek to merely hold the ball outside the three point line with no effort at all to penetrate, the referees shall give three warnings and then allow the defence to press to the half-way line. The rule shall be enforced by the referees with the intervention of the person in charge of the venue if necessary ADVERTISING If you wish to advertise in “TIME OUT” please contact the NVBC Office on 9877 9859 or [email protected] for information.
