PRECIOUS STONE
After the amazing effort of Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire})
a half-hour earlier, the pressure was on Frankie Dettori
to steer White Moonstone (Dynaformer) to glory in the
G1 Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile and maintain the
momentum on Ascot's star-studded card. At 4-5,
Godolphin's charge was a confident choice and, although she had to dig in
to find more than had
been required in
Doncaster's G2 May Hill

was equal to the task to

ran as well as Doncaster--it was only two weeks since,
she was a bit fresh in the paddock and the turn of foot
wasn't as good--but her class pulled her through,"
Dettori offered. "Now we are going to put her away for
the winter, as she has a lot of filling out to do, and is
quite light-framed." Cont. p4

FEATURE PRESENTATION • G1 QEII S.
HIS MASTER'S VOICE
On a roll after wins in the Fillies' Mile and major handicap preceding the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. yesterday,
Frankie Dettori carried his momentum forward to steer
Poet's Voice (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to a nose victory over
the defending champion Rip Van Winkle (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) in a rousing renewal at his beloved Ascot. Starting at 9-2 as a result of sustained support despite
mixed messages from the formbook, Godolphin's
Aug. 28 G2 Celebration Mile winner picked up his
rider's positive vibes, and delivered a last-to-first surge
in the stretch to overhaul the Ballydoyle raider in the
final yards. "This is my church," Dettori said as he was
led back to a rapturous reception at the track at which
he rode his famed >magnificent seven' in 1996.

Unveiled over six furlongs at this venue July 23,
White Moonstone raced away from the remaining runners towards the stand's rail there, but showed a professionalism and quality that set her apart to record a
perfect opener. After extending her tally with comfort
in Newmarket's Aug. 7 G3 Sweet Solera S.--also won
by 2002 Fillies' Mile heroine Soviet Song (Ire) (Marju
{Ire})--she was sent to Doncaster to tread the footsteps
of Rainbow View (Dynaformer), who annexed the May
Hill en route to victory here two years ago. Like that
precocious talent, White Moonstone raced away with
that mile contest without any stress, and duly entered
this greater test with the ideal warm-up under her belt.
Switched off by a confident Dettori as Fork Handles
(GB) (Doyen {Ire}) provided the pace, she was asked to
quicken wide off the bend as Theyskens' Theory kicked
on past the long-time leader. Gathering in that rival
without recourse to the whip at the eighth pole, she
flashed her tail each time her rider applied two strokes,
but never flinched as Together drove into her advantage
late on. Click for the Racing Post chart or the free

So impressive when winning virtually on the bridle on
debut over a mile at Newmarket Aug. 13, Frankel was
allowed some rein by Tom Queally on his second start
in a seven-furlong Doncaster conditions event, and
reacted by storming to a 13-length win to start the
ante-post rumblings. Coming here just 15 days later,
the imposing bay bettered that eye-catching display to
prompt the bookmakers to shorten him to 2-1 for the
2011 2000 Guineas and 4-1 for the Derby. He was
anchored last of the five runners by Queally off the
steady early gallop, and produced a rarely seen middle
move to circle all rivals in a matter of strides racing
wide on the turn for home. Losing little energy with
that maneuver, he was quickly in command after his
rider took a leisurely look round at the quarter pole and
used hands and heels only to push him out to this
resounding success.
GII Pennsylvania Derby Morning Line (Tiznow) takes it
in a wild finish.
GII Super Derby Apart (Flatter) comes charging late to
make it two straight.
GII Gallant Bloom H. My Jen (Fusaichi Pegasus) pulls
off the upset.
AThey didn't go very fast, as I think they hoped he
wouldn't settle, but he relaxed very well and when
pulled out, went straight from second gear to
fifth--Tom [Queally] says he does that in his work at
home,@ Henry Cecil said. AHe has scope, too, and I've
brought him along gradually, as he's bred to be a
three-year-old.@ Despite that fact, Cecil refused to guarantee he=d make an appearance at Epsom come next
June. AHe has the right temperament to go on and
improve, but a lot can happen between now and the
Classics, and I'd question if he will get the Derby trip,
as the dam was very fast, and that side has come out a
lot in him even though he's by Galileo. His three-parts
brother Bullet Train (GB) (Sadler's Wells) doesn't stay
much further than a mile and a quarter, so he could be
a mile or mile-and-a-quarter horse, but he has a lot of
class. He could easily be a Guineas horse, and we have
to decide whether to go for the G1 Dewhurst S. [at
Newmarket Oct. 16] or the G1 Racing Post Trophy [at
Doncaster Oct. 23], and it depends how he does. I'd
rather go for the Dewhurst, as I can finish him off a bit
earlier." Click for the Racing Post chart or the free

Grand Rapport failed to land a blow when a wellbeaten seventh in last term=s GII Futurity S. at Belmont
in September and sixth in the GII Remsen S. at Aqueduct in November, but has really come into his own
since switching to grass. The chestnut got up by a
head in a Monmouth allowance in his sophomore debut
on the lawn July 16, then came within a nose of getting his picture taken in Saratoga=s GII National Museum
of Racing Hall of Fame S. most recently Aug. 13.
Slightly favored here, Grand Rapport saved ground in
sixth as Stormy Lord and Workin for Hops led through a
half mile in :49.66. The Earle Mack colorbearer began
to kick in after a couple of left-handers from Ramon
Dominguez in the stretch, and came charging late on
the outside to reel in Workin for Hops in the shadow of
the wire. Click for the brisnet.com chart or the

A progressive sort typical of her owner's breeding
operation, Shareen broke her maiden at Killarney
May 11, and went on to win a Leopardstown handicap
June 10 and the Ulster Oaks H. at Down Royal
June 20. Fifth in the Listed Hurry Harriett S. over this
course and distance Aug. 11, she was worried out of it
close home when second to Obama Rule (Ire) in the
G3 Dance Design S. at The Curragh last time Aug. 29,
and was always in the vanguard here. Pushed along on
the home turn, she was driven into a clear lead passing
the eighth pole and stuck on gamely to hold the customary late challenge of She's Our Mark. "We were
worried about the ground, but she is very, very tough
and consistent," trainer John Oxx told irishracing.com.
"That was the plan so I don't know what's in the future
for her, but it is great to win a group race with her."

Scalo returns to a mile and a half following his authoritative success in Deauville's G2 Prix Guillaume
d'Ornano over 10 furlongs Aug. 15. This trip did not
appear to be a problem when a staying-on ninth from
an uncompromising position in the G1 Deutsches Derby
at Hamburg July 18, and he bids to add to his previous
domestic successes in Frankfurt's G3 Fruhjahrspreis des
Bankhauses Metzler May 2 and Munich's G3 Bavarian
Classic May 24. Night Magic comes into this on the
back of a career-best win in the Sept. 5 G1 Grosser
Preis Von Baden, where Quijano was 1 3/4 lengths
back in second and Northern Glory, Allied Powers and
Wiener Walzer were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
She had previously won the G2 Grosser Preis der
Hauptstadtregion at Hoppegarten June 6 and finished
runner-up in the July 25 G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at
Munich. Wiener Walzer was disappointing in the
Grosser Preis Von Baden, but that was his second
below-par effort at that track, and last year's G1
Deutsches Derby and G1 Rheinland-Pokal hero had
previously shown when second in the G1 Deutschland
Preis at Hamburg July 17 that he retains ability.

J “TDN Rising Star” J Lady of the Desert
bounced back to her high-class best last time when
chasing home Markab (GB) (Green Desert) in the
Sept. 4 G1 Haydock Sprint Cup. That was her first run
over this trip since her two-year-old days when she was
winning the G3 Princess Margaret S. here and G2 Lowther S. at York and finishing third in Newmarket's
G1 Cheveley Park S. Owner Jaber Abdullah's Racing
Manager Bruce Raymond told PA Sport, "I know she's a
filly and it is always difficult to win these races with
them, but she is one of the better ones in the race and
she's fresher than most. We are very hopeful. She
wouldn't want too much rain. She's quite light on her
feet, so you'd think she'd want good ground. It's nice
for Jaber to have a daughter of his best mare, Queen's
Logic (Ire), to be as good as this. His breeding operation
is coming to fruition now. She'll be staying in training
next year when hopefully we'll have a good crack at all
the big sprints when she should be that bit stronger."
Last year's winner Sayif would be worthy of maximum
respect if he can rebound from two unplaced efforts
this term, most recently when dismally disappointing in
the June 19 Golden Jubilee at the Royal meeting and
has been switched from Peter Chapple-Hyam to Sir
Michael Stoute. Tony Nerses, racing manager to owners Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar, told PA Sport,
"He's going well with a new handler. He needed some
rest, he's had that and he's ready to go. He won the
race last year, and he's a good horse on his day. He's
been pleasing Sir Michael, and we are hopeful he will
regain his form. If he could do it again it would be
fantastic." He is joined by fellow Freemason Lodge
representative Kingsgate Native, and that 2007
Nunthorpe and 2008 Golden Jubilee hero showed a
glimpse of a return to form when fourth in the Haydock
Sprint Cup last time. Since annexing the G3 Prix du
Palais-Royal with authority over seven furlongs at
Longchamp June 5, Dalghar has looked a non-stayer
when fifth over a mile in the June 15 Queen Anne here
and when caught close home back over seven when
third in Goodwood's G2 Lennox S. July 27 and runner-up in the G3 Prix du Pin back at Longchamp on his
latest outing Sept. 5.

Supplemented this week, Casamento has a huge
amount in hand over these rivals based on his head
second to Pathfork (Distorted Humor) in the G1 National S. over seven furlongs at this trip Sept. 11. He
had the G1 Phoenix S. winner Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili
{GB}) languishing five lengths back in third, and a reproduction of that effort would ensure success here.
"He was staying on really well the last day, maybe lack
of experience might have caught him out," trainer Mick
Halford told PA Sport. "We didn't have any other entries for him after the National S. and he was in such
good form this race came at the right time. There's no
travelling involved either, and he worked so well the
other morning, we decided to let him go. It's been won
by some very good horses in the past. He deserves to
be favourite, it was a tremendous performance and this
looks a good opportunity. I was a bit apprehensive
about letting him run on good-to-firm on his debut, but
he's handled it and he went in soft last time. He'll
probably get further, but he doesn't lack for pace either
and I think he'll get better with racing, he's very exciting." Aidan O'Brien won this race six times in the last
decade and saddles a duo headed by Factum, who
followed a neck second to Mawaakef in a Killarney
maiden over an extended mile Aug. 20 with a win over
seven furlongs on Dundalk's Polytrack last time
Sept. 5. Music In the Rain represents Jim Bolger's
Coolcullen base and looked a colt with a bright future
when registering a two-length success in a mile Naas
maiden last time July 21.

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLINGS
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2010
Sept. 12 & 13 ! 7 p.m .
Sept. 14-26 !10:00 a.m.
WILKO COLT HEADS PENULTIMATE KEESEP
SESSION Hip 4296, a colt from the first crop by
GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile winner Wilko (Awesome
Again) out of Miss Attractive (Running Stag) brought a
final bid of $40,000 to top the penultimate day of
trading at the 14-session Keeneland September sale.
The January foal was bred and consigned by Frank
Stronach=s Adena Springs and purchased by Texasbased Preston Stables LLC. Preston Stables is owned
by Arthur and Stephanie Preston, who also race under
the stable name Oxbow Racing LLC. The Prestons
campaigned GISW Ermine (Exchange Rate), a $45,000
OBSAUG yearling who earned $880,134 and sold, in
foal to A.P. Indy, for $1.3 million at FTKNOV 2008.
Miss Attractive, the dam of hip 4296, was bred and
raced by Adena. The dark bay showed promise in three
starts, breaking her maiden by 11 1/2 lengths in her
career opener and adding an allowance score, both at
Woodbine, as a juvenile in 2005. She started just once
at three, running second in a Monmouth allowance test,
before joining the Adena broodmare band. Adena acquired Miss Attractive=s dam, Marquise Miss (Marquetry), in foal to Holy Bull, for $135,000 at Keeneland
November 2007. She has produced SW Miss Tizzy
(Cee=s Tizzy). The final session of Keeneland September
gets underway at 10 a.m. today. For complete results,

Round-Up
Godolphin Duo Swell Park Events...
Godolphin yesterday supplemented Ragsah (Ire)
(Shamardal) and Al Aasifh (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) to
Friday's G1 Cheveley Park S. and G1 Shadwell Stud
Middle Park S. respectively. The former, who is a
half-sister to Dubai Millennium (GB) and was runner-up
in last Saturday's G3 Firth of Clyde S. at Ayr, makes
for a potential field of 15 for the fillies' contest while
the addition of the July 16 Listed Rose Bowl S. winner
Al Aasifh and also the July 25 G2 Prix Robert Papin
winner Irish Field (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) swelled the Middle
Park to 14. Richard Hannon is set to saddle Highclere
Thoroughbred Racing's July 7 G2 Cherry Hinton S.
scorer Memory (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in the
Cheveley Park, which could also feature Michael Tabor,
Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier's Aug. 29
G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Misty For Me (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}). In the Middle Park, David Simcock looks set to
unleash Khalifa Dasmal's Aug. 22 G1 Prix Morny winner Dream Ahead (Diktat {GB}) and he said of him,
"Dream Ahead worked over five-and-a-half furlongs on
the Peat Moss gallop and we were delighted with him.
That will be his last serious piece of work before the
Middle Park S., although we will look to give him a
breeze next Monday or Tuesday. We are very happy
with how his preparations are going. The Middle Park is
going to be a better race than the Morny, no question
about that. But we'd like to think that hopefully he has
improved a little bit. What will be massively in his favour is if there is significant rainfall, and the forecast
suggests an unsettled picture." Others in the mix to
oppose him are Julie Wood's June 15 G2 Coventry S.
winner Strong Suit (Rahy) and John Fretwell's Sept. 18
G2 Mill Reef S. scorer Temple Meads (GB) (Avonbridge
{GB}).

MYTHICAL TRUTH (c, 2, Yes It=s True--Misty Light Air,

It was getting late in the day at OBS March and Leah
Gyarmati and her owner Jeff Treadway, who got
started in the business several
years ago as part of a partnership but has begun to purchase
horses on his own, were looking
like they might leave the sale
empty-handed. But Gyarmati
wouldn=t depart without taking
another look at a grey Yes It=s
True colt that had caught her
eye.
AThere were some things going
on with the horse=s x-rays, so he
ended up being a buy-back,@ reLeah Gyarmati
called Gyarmati. ABut, we really
cvfhorseracingpartnership.com
liked the way he looked, and at
the end of the day we hadn=t gotten anything so I said
>let=s go back and check out that horse= and then we
bought him privately.@
AHe=s a beautiful horse. He=s very, very impressivelooking and he moves really well and I thought he
worked really well for the sale (1/8 in 21.3). The only
reason he was a buy-back was because he had some
issues, but we decided that if we paid the right price
he=d still be worth it,@ said the Queens native.
Mythical Truth hasn=t quite put it all together yet, but
the flashes of brilliance he has shown give the impression that Treadway and Gyarmati might have gotten a
pretty good bargain.
The grey=s debut came against a salty group of juveniles at the Spa July 24, which included Wine Police
(Speightstown), who earned J “TDN Rising Star” J
status for his 7 3/4-length romp in that event before
running third of four in the GI Hopeful S.; and Soldat
(War Front), who broke his maiden impressively next
out in the GIII With Anticipation S. on the grass Sep. 3.

Mythical Truth dashed out of the gate to attend a
pace of :22.22 and :45.50 with that duo before fading
to fifth, beaten 20 1/4 lengths (video). Gyarmati admits
that she was expecting a better finish, but offered up
several factors that could have contributed to the relatively disappointing performance.
AFirst of all, it was a very tough race,@ she said AHe
ran great, but I think he was hustled off of his feet a
little bit. He broke third and if he would have just sat
there and waited to run, he would have been right
there. We probably wouldn=t have beaten Wine Police,
but I think he=s second or third if he just sits chilly
instead of dueling. He also came back pretty dehydrated. It was a hot day and he didn=t handle the heat
so well.
AI=ve never had a horse with the thumps before, but it
seemed like he came back with something like the
thumps, so I took him off Lasix [for his second start] in
case that was a factor.@
Mythical Truth=s second trip at Belmont Sep. 18 was
even more eventful, and he overcame extreme adversity
in a way that few horses ever do. He also left bettors
scrambling for tickets they had ripped up or tossed
away when it looked like the grey had no chance to hit
the board.
The colt tried to wheel at the start, spotting the field
an insurmountable 17-length head start, but he regained his composure and settled back into stride,
overcoming his disadvantageous break without ever
really being asked for run, somehow managing to secure the show spot, less than 10 1/4 lengths behind
good-looking winner Justin Phillip (First Samurai)
(video).
AHe=s never done anything like that before,@ said
Gyarmati of her charge=s gate antics. AHe=s all business,
always does the right thing. I don=t know why he did
that. The horse inside of him broke a little slow and he
had to wait a long time--there were some horses to his
outside that were acting up and not wanting to go in
the gate, but I have no idea [why he did that]. He=s also
a >no handle= in the gate. He=s very good in the gate by
himself, but he likes to play if you get in there with
him. Maybe between all those things that=s what did it.
She added, AI thought if Edgar didn=t just totally give
up on him I thought he could get up there for something, but I didn=t think he=d get up for third. I was just
hoping, >please, just do something good!= He galloped
out so hard after that, he went another three-eighths of
a mile after the race.@
Those who are curious to see what Mythical Truth
can do with a clean break will have to be patient, however.
AHe has a couple of issues coming out of it, so I think
what we=re going to do is stop on him for a little bit. It
might have been partially because of that little U-turn
he made that he=s got some little things going on with
his legs,@ revealed Gyarmati. AI know he=s a really nice
horse and I=m not going to test it by pushing him right
now. We=ll give him the time, do the right things and
we=ll have a nice three-year-old.@

Conditioner Seth Benzel, who went out on his own in
2008 after working as an assistant for Todd Pletcher
and Bill Mott, enjoyed a break out Saratoga meet this
year. The upstate New York native
sent out 10 winners from 32 starts
at the Spa, good for a lofty 31-percent win rate. He also got his first
Grade II win with Dynaslew
(Dynaformer) in the Ballston Spa H.
One of Benzel=s more interesting
prospects moving forward after
Saratoga, however, is not one of
the horses that found the winner=s
circle.
Mister Pippit, a chestnut son of
Tapit from the female family of
Ogygian and Honour and Glory,
turned in a solid second-place deSeth Benzel
but going 1 1/16 miles on the sod

in the last race of the meet on
Sept. 6, and looks like a colt with a bright future.
Benzel, who picked out the horse as a yearling for
Jim Pippo=s Whitehall Stable partnership at Fasig-Tipton
July, recalled, AHe was kind of a scopey horse with a
very nice walk, intelligent-looking head and just seemed
to have a lot of energy. Those sales can tend to be
tiresome on the horses because they=re brought out so
much and they go back-and-forth, but he seemed to be
a horse that just thrived during the whole sale and didn=t let anything tamper with his high energy level. Also,
Tapit has done some great things early on, so we were
happy to get him.@
Benzel did not originally have the turf in mind for
Mister Pippit, but discovered the juvenile=s affinity for
grass during morning works.
AWe found that he preferred the turf through training.
We were hoping that--as with all horses--he would be
able to run on the dirt, but as we started to get closer
to race time, you could see an immediate difference
from the way he was covering ground on the dirt versus the turf,@ explained Benzel.
One of those training sessions--a five-furlong drill in
1:01.70 over Saratoga=s Oklahoma Training Track grass
course Aug. 20--came in company with sophomore
Souper Spectacular (Giant=s Causeway), a $1.15 million
half-brother to Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}), who broke
his maiden impressively in his first turf try Sep. 4.

On how Benzel pairs his horses in the morning, he
explained, AIt=s partially timing. It also depends on what
I=m looking to achieve--either a certain time or a certain
kind of effort. At that particular stage I wanted a good
work from both horses, I thought both were ready to
do that and I thought
they could give each
other ample competition
to get done what we
wanted to get done. Fortunately for us it paid off
with both horses.@
Benzel was pleasantly
surprised with Mister
Pippit=s debut, however,
Mister Pippit
he thought that he would
Serita

still need a race before
being at his best. The colt
was well out of it early, but finished with a rush on the
rail to best all but one, loose-on-the-lead Shug
McGaughey trainee Voodoo Storm (Storm Cat), a son
of MGISW Voodoo Dancer (Kingmambo) who won by 1
1/4 lengths. The speed-favoring turf bias that was
prevalent all meet made Mister Pippit=s against-the-grain
run that much more impressive (video).
ADown the backside I was very confident because he
looked like he was going along so easily, but he was
one of those horses in the morning that didn=t necessarily impress you,@ Benzel reflected. AIt doesn=t seem like
anything has changed. I don=t think he gets geared up
for the morning workouts like he does for the races. He
goes over there and kind of puts his >game face= on. I
thought we were in good shape by the time we saddled
him in the paddock because he just seemed to handle
the experience so well and seemed to be on his toes
and he just reacted to the limelight in a positive way.@
The insight Benzel gained about his charge from that
first run has left the conditioner excited and hopeful
about what=s to come.
Horse Whisperer

Clare O=Connor, Forbes Magazine
AFor him to run like that right off the bat means we=ve
got an awful lot of extra headway to make with him. I
think he=ll really bounce out of that race well and take a
step forward off of that effort,@ he commented.
Mister Pippit exited his debut in excellent shape, and
Benzel is pointing him to another 8 1/2-furlong grass
event at Belmont Oct. 2.

DARK COVE (c, 3, Medaglia d=Oro--Crystal Cove, by

seventh at Gulfstream in February and, after a break,
running sixth at Monmouth July 4. The bay was
dropped in for a $16,000 tag in the mud at Saratoga
Aug. 16 and failed to hit the board once again, but was
claimed by his current connections, who had a surface
switch in mind. Dark Cove tried turf for the first time
versus $25,000 maiden claimers at the Spa 13 days
later, scoring by a neck at 9-1 odds. He was 15-1 to go
back-to-back on the spinach. Taken in hand from his
outside post, the sophomore was at the back of the
field for six furlongs, and had a lot of work to do as
they swung into the stretch. Making his run through
the middle of the field, he started to pick off horses
despite racing on his wrong lead after straightening for
home, then exploded when finally switching to his right
lead in the final yards and swooped past Pretty Boy
Freud (Freud) in the very last strides to win by a head.

broke his maiden at Belmont in his career opener

the gates opened in the July 25 GII Sanford S., running
sixth. Finding trouble at the start in the Aug. 16
GII Saratoga Special S. as well, he was bumped hard,
but recovered to go for the early lead. The bay was
collared by the talented Kantharos (Lion Heart) at

+A STORY OF REVENGE (f, 2, Tale of the Cat--Meguial
{Arg} {SW & MG1SP-Arg, MSP-US}, by Roy) a halfsister to last year=s impressive GI Wood Memorial S.
winner I Want Revenge (Stephen Got Even), GISW,
$876,000, was offered at Barretts March by NexStar
on behalf of breeder of David Lanzman, but RNA=d at
$975,000. Armed with a good series of works at Fair
Hill for trainer Mike Trombetta--who sports a formidable
26-percent record with firsters--she was the 9-5 choice,
and did not disappoint her backers. The favorite broke
like a shot from her rail post, and held a half-length
advantage over Switching Gears (Tapit) through splits
of :22.82 and :46.33. The latter seemed to have every
opportunity to go by in the stretch, but A Story of
Revenge kept digging in on the inside, and hit the wire
a head in front of her rival before galloping out strongly.

A STORY OF REVENGE (Tale of the Cat)
There was no more-coveted offering at the Barretts
March Sale this past winter than hip 6, David
Lanzman=s Tale of the Cat
half-sister to GISW I Want
Revenge (Stephen Got Even).
The bay with the long white
blaze down her face, who had
breezed an eighth of a mile in
:10.2 ahead of the sale, stood
intently by as bidding climbed
past $900,000. But interest
A Story of Revenge breezing in
stalled out at $975,000, just
:10 2/5 at Fairplex
shy of Lanzman=s $1-million

reserve, and the filly was
headed back home.
Lanzman bred and raced I Want Revenge, but sold a
majority interest to IEAH Stables after he won the
GIII Gotham S. The colt went on to win the GI Wood
Memorial S., and was the morning-line chalk for the
GI Kentucky Derby, but had to be scratched the morning of the race. There ensued a dispute over the terms
of the partnership, with both sides filing lawsuits, but
ultimately IEAH bought out Lanzman=s share.
A Story of Revenge--the Alast connection to I Want
Revenge,@ as the owner put it--was ultimately turned
over to Mike Trombetta, and began working with regularity in early July over the gallops at Fair Hill. The
daughter of Meguial (Arg) (Roy) really began to pick up
the pace over the last handful of weeks, turning in a
pair of strong drills over five-eighths of a mile before
heading to Monmouth Park for her final breeze.
Sent out for a half-mile tightener from the gate Sept.
19, she just missed the bullet while outworking some
102 other horses, stopping the timer in :47 3/5.
Unfortunately for Trombetta, his filly drew the
dreaded inside stall for her debut.
AIt=s always a bad post for a first-time starter,@ the
conditioner commented. AIt seems that all the horses
that I like draw the one hole.@
Trombetta, who strikes with just over one of every
four of his debuters, knew his filly had a world of talent, but wasn=t exactly sure that Saturday would be the
day.
AI was always concerned that she might not be at her
best sprinting,@ he offered. AShe always acted like a filly
that wants two turns. I think the owner was very understanding that it wasn=t a have-to-win kind of day
today. As long as she got a good first run and showed
us some promise, we would have all been happy.@
And that she did. Away without incident from the
one hole, she took pressure from her outside every step
of the six furlongs,
but dug in determinedly in the final
100 yards and held
on for the victory.
AWe=ll reward her
for that and give her
plenty of time before we start her
back, because she
A Story of Revenge (inside) Equi-Photo
was under the gun
from the get-go, but still got it done,@ Trombetta explained. AI=d like to see her have the benefit of four to
six weeks before I run her again.@
Given his hunch that A Story of Revenge will relish a
route of ground in the future, Trombetta is inclined to
stretch her out next time. But how far is as-yet undetermined.
AGenerally, I like to give her two sprints before I
stretch them out, but I think this filly will appreciate the
added distance,@ Trombetta offered. AI don=t know if it
will be two turns right away, but I think she=ll go on.@
The trainer, who saddled Kentucky Derby favorite
Sweetnorthernsaint to a seventh-place finish in 2006,
believes the sky is the limit.
AWhat I like about her is that we didn=t put a ton of
pressure on her getting her ready for this race,@ he
stated. AShe came into it and was able to get it done
when she was vulnerable, and that means a lot to me.@

Victorious in last October's Listed Garnet S. at Naas
when handled by John Oxx, Aspectoflove raced for her
new connections in Dubai over the winter, taking second in the G3 Cape Verdi Feb. 5 and the G3 Balanchine
Feb. 25, both at Meydan. She marked her European
return with a fourth in the Listed Conqueror S. at Goodwood May 1, and went on to finish fifth in the
G3 Princess Elizabeth S. at Epsom June 5. Rested since
a seventh-place finish in the G2 Windsor Forest S. at
the Royal meeting here June 16, the eventual winner
raced keenly within sight of the leaders in midfield
through the early strides. Asked to close at the quarter
pole, she overpowered Sajjhaa under a Ted Durcan
drive close home. "She ran over the winter and at Royal
Ascot and, after her last run, everybody realized that
she needed a holiday," said Durcan. "They worked hard
and freshened her up at home. She rocked up here
today with ease in the ground, and the race has gone
smoothly. It was a head-to-head, and Sajjhaa was always just holding me, but in the last six strides it was a
matter of heads and it went my way." Trainer Saeed
bin Suroor added, "She came from behind strongly to
finish second twice in Dubai, but I found that in the
morning, when she works in front, she looks brilliant. I
told [jockey] Ted [Durcan] to sit in behind the lead and
relax her in the race. We'll look for a group race now."

Having bagged the June 16 G3 Jersey S. at the Royal
meet, Rainfall ran a commendable third in the July 7
G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket before slipping to fifth in
the G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville Aug. 1. She was a
close, albeit disappointing, eighth in the G2 Park S. at
Doncaster last time Sept. 11, and capped a fine afternoon for Frankie Dettori by providing him with a fourth
win on the seven-race card. Held up and in touch until
coming under pressure at the two pole, the bay seized
control at the distance and was ridden out to comfortably dominate. "I thought she would run better than
she did at Doncaster," trainer Mark Johnston told PA
Sport. "It has been a step down in class to try to get
her confidence back." Video, courtesy attheraces.com.
Previously trained by Kevin Ryan, Redford made his
debut for David >Dandy' Nicholls at Newmarket Aug. 7,
when he finished ninth in an ordinary handicap before
finishing a promising third in a similar event at Chester
Aug. 21. He finally showed the ability that had been
hinted at throughout his career by weaving through the
field to lift the highly valuable Ayr Gold Cup H. one
week ago and, like last week, Frankie Dettori settled
him towards the rear of the stands= side group. Travelling conspicuously well at the two-furlong marker, he
made rapid progress to take over 150 yards from home,
and one backhander saw the partnership notch a valuable handicap double in fine style. "I followed the right
horse and the split came at the right time," said Dettori.
"I managed to get behind [jockey] Seb Sanders [on
Imperial Guest] and he opened the race up for me.
When I pressed the button, he went. You have to say
well done to [trainer] Dandy [Nicholls], because to win
two handicaps like this in two weeks is remarkable. It's
like asking Usain Bolt to run 9.8 [seconds for 100 meters] two weeks in a row. It's almost impossible."

SLIGHT INCREASE IN MILAN
Despite a low-key second session which boasted a
top price of just i38,000, SGA=s September Yearling
Sale ended with a rise in average yesterday. That figure
of i21,576 represented an increase of 16 percent on
last year=s, with the median of i13,000 slipping by
13 percent. There remained a foreign contingent among
the buyers during the second session, with Racing
Factory active from Germany alongside Con Marnane,
who purchased the topper, hip 298. She is a daughter
of the first-season sire sensation Iffraaj (GB), who is a
half-sister to the listed-placed Going For Gold (Ity) (Gold
Away {Ire}). That eclipsed the i36,000 paid by
Allevamento dei Sette for hip 257, a son of Dubai Destination whose dam is a sister to the 2000 G3 Gallinule
S. winner and G1 Irish Derby runner-up Glyndebourne
(Ire) (Sadler's Wells), the same family as the i105,000
Authorized (Ire) yearling sold on Friday. Antonio Peraino
snapped up Razza del Sole=s hip 249, a colt named
Quam Qui Maxime (GB) from the first crop of Three
Valleys for i32,000. Allevamento Le Gi=s hip 187, an
Orpen half-sister to the Listed-placed Private Dancer (Fr)
(Green Tune) from the extended family of the 1995
G1 Racing Post Trophy winner Beauchamp King (GB)
(Nishapour {Fr}), was knocked down to Antonino Bosco
for i30,000. Complete results can be found on

HONG KONG H
SACRED KINGDOM SET FOR RETURN
It has been over six months since world champion
turf sprinter Sacred Kingdom (Aus) (Encosta de Lago
{Aus}) suffered a near-fatal bout with colic on the
tarmac at Chep Lap Kok International Airport as he was
about to depart for Japan.
Nursed back into health by
trainer Ricky Yiu, the two-time
G1 Hong Kong Sprint hero
makes a much-anticipated return to the races Friday at Sha
Tin when he races in the
Listed Sha Tin Trophy over
the straight 1000 meters. It
will be his first start since he
won the Chairman=s Sprint
Sacred Kingdom and jockey Prize Feb. 21. Sacred Kingdom
announced his readiness for
Brett Prebble HKJC photo
the engagement yesterday
morning, coming home a strong second to fellow
MG1SW Able One (NZ) (Cape Cross {Ire}) in a Saturday
barrier trial over the Sha Tin Trophy course and distance. "He looks as healthy as he was when he was
blitzing them last season," jockey Brett Prebble told
South China Morning Post. "His action is great, the
barrier trial will take that fresh edge off him a touch and
I couldn't be happier with how he is shaping up." Friday=s race is the first of what will likely be two lead-up
races prior to his attempt to land a third Hong Kong
Sprint Dec. 12.
