Story page The ivory keys By Leela Guha Introduction In the 15th century, a rich merchant gave his daughters a gift. He gave the oldest a town house, the middle child a ship and the youngest, Eliza, three ivory keys. He said to Eliza: “These ivory keys unlock something very special. When you are thirteen I will tell what they unlock.” But Eliza’s father died before he could tell her. The keys were passed down from generations to generation, until the 18th century when the whole family was killed in the great plague. The house survived through the fire of London and was rebuilt in 2010. Would anyone ever solve the mystery of the ivory keys? 2015 I trotted up the dusty track, the jingle of the bit in the pony’s mouth lolling me to sleep. I turn onto a narrow path as a house looms up in front of me. The kitchen extension looked nice enough, a pleasant red brick unit with large windows, but the rest of the house was cold and dark. So, I thought. This is it. My new home. As I reach out to the large oak front door, a cloud of dust envelops me and for a moment I cannot see anything. I proceed down the passage and head for the narrow flight of stairs. I feel like the spirit of the house does not want me, like eyes are watching me resentfully from dark corners. I stiffen. I can feel a hand on my shoulder, but cannot see anyone. A voice cuts the silence like a scythe cutting diamond….. “Well, Eliza. You look exactly like your great grandmother.” A shiver runs down my spine. There is absolutely no-one there! Gwennie whinnied from the garden, and gave me a glad excuse to run outside. As I lay there, panting, I came to a conclusion. The voice I had heard must have been the voice of a ghost! It was not until mum got home that I dared to venture into the house again. My room was to be in the attic, two rickety ladders climb away. As I sat down on the big, old bed, I noticed a small wooden chest balanced on a rafter. Struggling to keep my balance, I stood on the bed post and pulled the chest down. The latch was stiff and I could not shift it. Now this was a mystery. Biting my knuckles, I grabbed my pocket knife and started to prise the chest open. After half an hour of long, hard work, the chest was finally forced open! My heart pounding, I gingerly reached into the box and pulled out a sheet of papyrus. It read: Last will and testament of Sisphanus. Whoever finds this will must find thewreck of the hippotosa, off the English coast. The ivory keys you will find in this chest unlocks something special on the wreck. I reached into the chest again. In my hand was a pair of ivory keys! Smooth, tarnished, and weathered with age, the keys were somewhat beautiful. Without thinking, I fitted the keys into the chest. Obviously, they did not fit, but they definitely opened a key in my mind. Boremouth! We’d been there last summer, and I remember diving down to a wreck under the sea there. I cannot remember what the name of the ship was, but it could have been hoppetosa! I had to get to Boremouth, and fast! But how? My mind was still buzzing with ideas when I sat down to supper with mum and dad. And then, of course, there was the question of the ghost. Or was it a ghost? There was nothing I could be certain of. As I settled down to sleep, I came to a conclusion. I would run away to Boremouth. I’d do it all tomorrow night, the sooner the better. My parents wouldn’t be worried, not if I’d spent my 10 years with them in earnest. Now, I thought, I need a note. I don’t want to give away my secret, but I can’t lie. And so, by the light of my faulty torch, I set to work. After around 2 hours of biting my pencil, my note was finished. Mum and Dad, I was summoned by my teacher on an urgent trip to Boremouth. I will be back soon. All the best, Eliza xxx I was ready to go. I’d saddled up Gwennie, packed a bag in secret and got my purse. Now all I had to do was wait…..
