What is the brain?

The brain is the heaviest organ in your body

It has 3 main parts - the cerebellum, the cerebrum
(has two parts the left and right cerebral
hemispheres) and the brain stem

Different parts of the
brain are in charge of
different things
Brain Research
•Brain
development is term being used to describe new
research into the importance of a child’s earliest
experiences
•Science
tells us that the right kind of experiences in the
early years can actually help our brains grow
Brain Development

Most neuroscientists believe that at birth
the human brain has all the neurons it will
ever have. Some connections, those that
control such automatic functions as
breathing and heart rate are in place at
birth, but most of the individual’s circuitry
result from experiences that greet the
newborn and continue throughout his or
her life.
Brain Growth

Strong evidence that there is a link between
brain activity and brain growth

Holding, cuddling, touching and talking affect
how your child’s brain develops

Nurturing your child’s brain development
doesn’t require money, fancy toys or special
equipment
5 ways to support your child’s brain
development
Talk with your child
 Read with your child every day
 Sing children’s songs or nursery rhymes
 Feed your child well
 Provide a stable and loving environment

Role of Brain
in Developmental Disorders

In past 10 years scientists have used magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) to show not just brain
structure – what the brain looks like- but also
brain function – how the brain looks works

Universally accepted among scientists that
differences in how the brain functions are root
cause of common behavioural and learning
problems like dyslexia and autism/Asperger’s
Disorder


Remember
•We
are all individuals and
•One size does not fit all
•We are all life-long learners
