Year 6 Homework Date Set: Thursday 15 January

English
Our targets this half term include
using a range of similes and
personification in our writing.
Similes compare two unlike
things using the words like, than,
as and as if e.g. the oven was as
hot as a volcano.
Personification is where the
writer gives human
characteristics to animals,
abstract concepts or inanimate
objects e.g. the sun smiled down
at me, wrapping me in her warm
embrace.
For your homework, we would
like you to show how you’re
getting better at using similes
and personification.
You might:
 Highlight all the similes or
personification in a piece of
text (from a book, song or
poem)
 Write your own passage
using similes and
personification
 Practise writing some
sentence examples using
similes or personification
Times Tables
Practise your times tables regularly – make sure you know
the multiplication and division facts for each times table.
You will be given 5 seconds to answer each ‘normal’
question and 10 seconds for each ‘derived’ question (e.g.
50 x 3; 2.4 ÷ 6) on our weekly Friday test.
Fri 23rd Jan: 11x tables including derived facts
Fri 30th Jan: 8x tables including derived facts
Remember to keep practising all times tables: they are
vital for our fraction and division work.
Year 6 Homework
Date Set: Thursday 15th January
Date Due: Friday 30th January
Maths
In our Maths work recently, we have been looking at
multiples, factors, square numbers and prime numbers.
For this homework, we would like you to show us
what you have learnt and how you remember the
difference between each concept.
You could:
 Practise some examples of each
 Write definitions of each to accompany an
example
 Conduct an investigation into e.g. square
numbers or prime numbers (e.g. is the
difference between prime numbers always 1, 2,
3 or 4?)
 Some useful phrases you might wish to include
are: “If I know…then I know…”; “I know…”;
“…because…”
Reading
Don’t forget to take your reading record home and read to an
adult at least 3 times each week. You don’t want to miss out
on your reading reward!
Spellings
Adults: please listen to your child read aloud and ask
questions to check their understanding of the pages read.
Then fill out and sign their comments box in their reading
record – thanks!
We set weekly spellings – look at your bank of
spelling games which contains fun ways in which
to learn your spellings. Show in your learning
log which activities you’ve done – we’d like to
see you try one activity each week.
Well done to those of you who regularly get extra play and
raffle tickets for all that reading. It’s making a difference.
Remember: merits are awarded and raffle prizes
to be won.
