You could tell by the painted vans that it was a children’s magic convention and was excellently organised by Jeremy of Practical Magic with big inputs from Kimmo, Pat Fallon and Gary Dunn. Terry Herbert lectured and his work and inspiration to a generation of Children’s Magicians was rightfully celebrated. There was also a US link up with Silly Billy in New York!! A fun mixture of lectures, dealers, food and just hanging out together!! Jeremy is now planning to repeat the dose in 2014. 6 In the hand - may meeting I am afraid that it is a long time since I wrote the notes to the May meeting and they are difficult to understand even for me!! allowed Roy to suffle the cards and the cards were then dealt with each card being turned face up. He stopped when he came to the first picture card. Simon then accurately predicted the next picture cards which were dealt. The cards were shuffled again by Roy and the feat repeated!! (I think this was said to be from an effect by Dr Rein in 1947 using Zenner cards) opened with a swizzling wand - folloed by a chosen card spun in the fingers. (Think this is called Chicago Web or Red Hot Mamma?). He then performed his version of the Symphony of the Rings using an assistant. started with the spooky turn over eye-glasses in the spectators hand. (Invisible loop). He then performed his Morcombe and Wise trick which is a signed card is torn and restored only to find the restored card (like Andre Prevue! In M&W) was not necissarily in the right order. The final reveal of a chosen card used the card chain - first card says Look in my pocket - this card says - Look on the table - this card then says Look in my mouth! - Where the chosen card is visible!! then performed the Roy Walton Cascade with surprising turn overs and then impossible ending! I cannot find who else performed that evening - sorry... 7 Jan logermann lecture Wednesday 12th June 2013 will be remembered as one of the best lectures we have had at DMC. Fortunately some visitors also joined us for the evening. Jan Logermann is a FISM Grand Prix Card winner and although the evening focused on a range of effects which mere mortals can also achieve it was clear Jan’s skills and flourishes which were interspersed int the leture almost as asides. Jan introduced himself with Moyne moyne - a Germanic Hello!! He then started on his laid back approach opening his Carlsberg Light can - accompanied with a “bright flash” Delite. After emptying the contents into his glass and quaffing some, he explained that all the effects he was sharing this evening are effects he performs regularly. He then dented the empty can ald left on the side with the glass from which he occasionally took a drink. where He then opened with a card effect he calls he had pre-show asked someone to think of a card (not known to the rest of us). In performance he then ask this person what card they are thinking of and after shuffling(!) the deck, using the noise from a sound box, causes the deck to open with top half bowing one way and the bottom half the other. From the gap he extracts a Joker saying that the person’s card has turned into the Joker. The assistant is then asKed to look through the whole pack for their card but it is not there! From this point Jan moved into his - it originated from a David Williamson effect. He chose a person from the audience. Need to learn to palm 4 cards. Get 4 Queens on the top of the deck - first of all offer the pack to the assistant face up pretending he will choose a card. Use this opportunity to get a break under the top 4 cards. When turning pack down and bringing hands together always take the cards to the palm not the palm to the cards. Achieve this with the ring finger (remember for Germans this is on the right hand!!) Inserted into the break and the 4 cards raised into the palm. Assitant then is given the rest of the pack and asked to go down through the pack and give me 3 cards from the pack. After the second card is put onto the hand then the palmed cards are secretly added. The last card frm the assistant is then placed on top. This means you have 7 cards in the hand. Do an Elmsley Count. (Push off 1, then the block of 5 (adding the one back to the original hand) then counting on 3 and 4). Do the count pulling the cards downwards to hide the 5 card block you are counting. 8 Now count two cards into the right hand and separate the top card in the left hand - show as two cards in each hand. (Actually a block of 4 on the bottom in the left hand fixed with the middle finger). Give the assistant one card and show the 3 cards. Now do the Elmsley again counting 4 cards!! (First surprise). Can do the Ascanio Spread if you want to again show the 4 cards. Then to same move with two in each hand giving one to the assistant!! Again do the Elmsley and Ascanio and then for the last time give one card to the assistant (3rd time). Now do an Elmsley counting the 4 cards as 3. Tent vanish You say “You gave me 3 cards and there are now (slide the 4th card into view under the other hand’s cover) 4!! “ Again put a card to the assistant. Now do an Elmsley counting 3 as 4. Now say “ I am going to do this again and again until you applaud!”. Put one more on the table - you have now 2. Ask audience how many card do they think you have......often they say 4. (If you have put a 4 clubs at the third position down from the top at the beginning you can now say yes 4 cards but there are actually only one. Show the double as a single card using the diagonal corners hold. The assistant now gives you 2 cards again and you do a one hand Ascanio spread of the 4 as 3. Locking the 2 on the bottom as one with the pinkie. Now you show the value of the cards. Put the two block of cards on the top and hence the top card is a card they have not seen. Glimpse that top card. Give the assistant the 4 cards saying - “now 3 cards for you” and pick up the whole deck. Mis-call the top card of the deck as the glimpsed card. Apparently put this top card on the table - (but using the thumb as you turn the left hand pull it back onto the top of the deck using the 3rd finger as a pivot, as you apparently cover the card on the table with the right hand. (Rub-a-dub vanish). (Like a retension vanish). Jan often does this on his knee rather than the table - apparently fixing the card on the knee. So the card has apparently vanished from the magician’s hand to appear in the spectator’s. Even highlighted as they see that the card which has appeared is the one you named. At this moment Jan palms a further about 20 cards!! Take the 4 cards off the assistant to explain the miracle. Add the palmed cards and immediately take off the top card to give back to the assistant. Now fan out the “lots of cards” in sets of about 5 seemingly lots of cards are appearing. Jan holds on to the top 3 cards of the palming so flourising these individually at the end of the production!! ( People are now quite convinced you have one huderd cards with all those which have been added since the start of the trick. Now pick up all the cards from the table - pushing them into shape - he then does the Gerry Andrews move which pumps up the volume of the cards. Bow the cards with finger and thumb at the short opposite ends of the pack, allowing air between, and grab the centre of the pack by the sides of the pack. (Thumb and middle finger.) Do not show horizontally but at an angle. Show against the empty box and it won’t fit. It looks as if you have 100 cards!! Now do the “tent vanish” at the same time as you allow the air to disappear from the pack. 9 Magical gesture for the vanish. (Good time if you want to use smoke!!)Pretending to put the invisible cards on the assistant’s hand. Now pretend to squeeze the rest of the cards into the box. Go to the pockets for the invisible card box for the assistant to put their cards in - a great opportunity for you to switch packs - which Jan does for his “memorised” deck which is given to the assistant. (If working with children tell them to put the invisible cards under their pillow at bedtime) Hopefully the parents will then add a real pack for the child to find in the morning!! The memorised deck is then used later in the show!. Jan then shared his which as with some other tricks had a situation where the start and end of the effect was separated by other effects. Borrowed Finger Ring - put in the glass on stage and left for a while. (Actually the ring was switched as it was collected) and gives him 3 chances to win the ring back. Go to the back row to take a ring - duplicate finger ring in right hand. Pick up ring off hand - your fingers shield the duplicate from the person from whom you borrowed it. On stage is a gift bag with a Lion Bar sticking out. This is a feke and a load tube to a small bag of Haribo sweets in a large Haribo pack. These have both been treated with rubber cement to seal when the tube comes out. The gift bag is given to someon to look after. Now other effects are continued with. In fact he went back to the pack he had switched and did producing the thought of card which is now in the pack. again this time actually Later the ring was vanished into a paper - press into paper to make impression etc. Get a member of audience to apparently feel the ring. Warm it up then - torn up. (Old but effective vanish) Supposed to end up in the ring box in the bag however in this box is one wrong ring and a sweet. If the sweet is in the ring box then perhaps the ring is in the sweets. All of this reveal can be done by the assistant. Finally to end the half he picked up the empty bent Carlsberg and went in to the Healed and Sealed effect!! The can loses its dent as it is blown into. The “hole” on the top of the can becomes resealed and Jan then opened the can and poured out the refilled contents!!! We were all fooled!!! (Well I was at least....) No one spotted the switch - he showed it was important to keep taking things from the case he had on a chair and at an opportune time 10 when two assistants were returning to their seats and he was clearing the rest of the sweets he did the switch!! When we returned from the break Jan shared how Anders Moden (who originated Healed and Sealed) had heard about Jan doing the effect and therefore sat in the front row on an occasion to watch for the switch!! When then Jan picked up the bent can Anders Moden said No way!!! I missed the switch!! one card in the card box. Taking risks but. Having in the Jan opened the second half with his interval asked someone to think of a card but not found it he asks the same person to name a card they were thinking of. Ususally they do name the card from previously. Jan then opened the pack took out the card. However it was not the card names - the card then visibly changed into a second not thought of card and finally into the named card. effect. In essence a £10 note was borrowed. The Jan then shared his very effective owner was told he could win it back if he could read out and then recall the serial number. The serial number was noted by someone ( and a the original donor was asked to remember the number - usually fails - as they only remember a part of the number they are allowed to tear off the corner and keep. The £10 is now changed into a £20 The person is given the £20 to confirm it is real - check it against the serial number to see if it theirs - clearly it is not and therefore it must be the performer’s . A bottle of cheap white wine is then offered as a prize instead only for a £10 note to appear inside this apparently unsealed bottle. The bottle is then uncorked the assistant is asked how he could get the wine and his note out!! Before he drinks it the bottle of wine is emptied then the bottle is put into a plastic bag - a hammer and safety gloves produced. The bottle smashed and with long tweezers the assistant retrieves the note - washes any class shards off in the wine and then confirms it is the original note with the serial numbers matching. The details of this effect were available in Jan’s excellent notes and DVD. An excellent evening was had by all!! Jan said his sound boxes came from a German dealer. 11 Thanks to Roy Gable We have always felt the Ken Savage Close Up Cup lacked stature!! Now it has its own plinth with space to record the winners. We have Roy Gable to thank for enhancing this cup. Thanks Roy. The first to adorn the plinth is Zak Stone. Show for Club Funds We are also very grateful to some members who received a cheque for £150 for the Club for a Fund Raising event at Churston Ferrers Grammar School on Friday 17th May. The performers were Bob Collyer, Ozzy and Barry Crompton and they did some close up during the dinner and then a stage show 12
