THE LAMPLIGHTER
Volume 25, Issue 3
April 2017
Jay Bennett and Ellen Thompson
This spring we have the privilege of welcoming two new staff
members to Ardmore UMC. In March, we welcomed Jay Bennett as
our Facilities Manager. Jay was raised in the Midwest but grew up
to become a Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic in Ocala, Florida, having
been inspired by the faithful work of firefighters in the period after
September 11, 2001. He moved to the Triad with his wife, Joanna,
and daughter Alexandra, age 7, when his wife became Director of
Patient Experience at Forsyth Medical Center. Jay comes to us from
the staff of Wesley Memorial UMC in High Point, and will be with us
approximately 28 hours per week. He is also pursuing a degree in
Emergency Management online from Western Carolina University.
In April, we will welcome Ellen Thompson as our new Director of
Christian Education. Ellen comes to us from Christ United Methodist
Church in Charlotte, where she has been on staff since 2002, serving
various roles and most recently as Director of Discipleship. Ellen also
has experience with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte and
served with them as a Match Specialist. She also has experience
with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the Public Library of
Charlotte-Mecklenburg County. Ellen is a graduate of Appalachian
State University, holds a Graduate Certificate in Family Life and
Parent Education from North Carolina State University, and is
concluding classwork this spring for a Master’s Degree in Practical
Theology and Pastoral Care/Counseling at Pfeiffer University. Ellen is
the mother of four young adult children, and we look forward to
welcoming her to her new role in children’s ministries and adult
spiritual formation here at Ardmore!

Welcome to Our New Staff Members
3
Dear Friends,
I can honestly say I have grown accustomed
to saying, “Welcome to Christ.” On April 3, after fifty
some years as a member of Christ UMC in Charlotte,
the familiar phrase or the comfortable habit will
change to “Welcome to Ardmore.” I can’t wait!
The change allows me to love and be loved in different ways.
I am certain love occurs in relationships. So, I
am prepared to tell you a little about me to get this
story started. I hope you will ask me a few questions
and start filling in the blanks as we get to know one
another. I am a mother of four children ages 20 to
30 years old. My son is the oldest and the other
three children are girls. We love spending our spontaneous time together outdoors. Our relationship is
a top priority on my list of things to do.
Pfeiffer University and my pursuit of a Masters
of Practical Theology in Pastoral Care grabs most of
my extra time. It is becoming a bitter sweet relationship. I am enthusiastically close to finishing the
degree. At the same time, I will miss the opportunities for Christian education and fellowship with my
classmates and professors.
I am certain the educational and faith building discipleship relationships we are preparing to
share, in a community of all ages, will honor God’s
love for us. My desire is to
find a place of relationship
with you and share it with
the Ardmore community.
See you Monday!
In His Image,
Ellen Thompson
Director of Christian
Education
Hello Ardmore!
I am happy to be here as the new Facilities Manager.
I moved to North Carolina from Florida approximately 3 years ago. Prior to moving to North Carolina I was a
career firefighter/paramedic. My wife Joanna works at Novant Health here in Winston Salem. We have a 7
year old daughter named Alexandra who is currently in 1st grade. My free time mostly consists of my daughter’s activities such as soccer, dance, and anything outdoor related. When I get a chance I enjoy baseball
and following the Chicago Cubs.
Looking forward to working with you,
Jay Bennett

PREPARING FOR EASTER
Much like Advent and Christmas, the seasons of Lent and Easter
require a lot of special preparation by the various music ensembles in our church. With the children, we take time to learn why
the seasons and special high, holy days are so important. The
Sanctuary Choir prepares extra pieces for Holy Week. The
Ardmore Bells help us prolong the Easter celebration with special
music for the second Sunday of Easter. And we hope you that you
have taken time to prepare for the joy and wonder of Easter, as
well: through reflection and prayer during the Lenten season or
perhaps by joining us for the Wednesday night hymn studies entitled Music, Theology, and Passion. -Dreama Lovitt, Music Director/
Organist
THE SANCTUARY CHOIR We have special music planned for Palm
Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Sunday. We are happy to
have a few extra singers joining us for Easter Sunday, in particular.
And you can join us, too, for the Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus at the
end of the 10:30am service.
PRESCHOOL CHOIR We are learning the second verse of “Jesus’
Hands Were Kind Hands” (Take my hands, Lord Jesus, let them
work for you…) and… we are learning how to skip! Skipping
rhythms are in many children’s songs and we can often best recognize this rhythm through movement– skipping! As always, we
compare this to other rhythms and motions, in this case marching!
One of our skipping songs: Let the children come to me. One of
our marching songs: Jesus Loves Me.
qqqq
vs
q eq e
And, as we learn about Palm Sunday, we are also learning the
refrain of ‘All Glory, Laud, and Honor’.
CHILDREN’S CHOIR We are hard at work, preparing for our Palm
Sunday anthem Look Who’s Coming, which we will sing with trumpet! As we learn about Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, we are also
singing Hymn No. 280 “All Glory, Laud, and Honor”. We are learning to sing out of the hymnal (learning to be “Hymn Masters” as I
like to call it)! Even as we prepare to make Palm Sunday extra special, we are beginning to learn our final anthem of the season:
What, Then, Will God Do With Me? So, we are contemplating how
God might use us as we grow.
THE ARDMORE BELLS Ding-a-ling! Every Monday, I find myself telling
someone, “Last night in Bell Choir…” :) We work hard (because,
let’s be honest, ringing handbells isn’t always easy), but there is
always a lot of laughter involved. This Winter and Spring, we’ve
been brushing up on some basic ringing skills, along with adding
to our toolkit (triplets, mallets, swings, martellatos, and more!). We
have some lovely pieces yet to ring in our 2016-17 season! We are
particularly enjoying preparing our Variations on Gaudeamus
Pariter and Sent Forth By God’s Blessing, which we will ring on Sunday, April 23rd.
We mourn the loss of Lydia Brinker, who sang in the Sanctuary
Choir for many years and who helped with the Preschool Choir
and Children’s Choir for years when her son was younger.
Lydia had to take a break from choir during her recent battle
with cancer, but was always eager to return. We are so thankful
that she managed to make it to a few rehearsals earlier this year.
It was wonderful having her with us again,
even if the time was all too brief.
Lydia, you are and will be greatly missed.

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood Contemporary Music guy.
So, in case you didn't know...
I passed the audition! What does that mean? It means that my contract has been extended six months, so
you're stuck with me for a little while longer. I hope you're as happy about this as I am. I've really been enjoying my time in Rozzelle Chapel and the band is beginning to come together in a major way. We had a great
Worship Team "Retreat" last weekend, during which we began fashioning a covenant. The takeaway is that
this whole thing we're doing is not about us or for us. It's for God, plain and simple. And God deserves our best,
wouldn't you agree? That said, if you ever see us coasting through the 11:15 service, it's your duty to call us out
on it. Fair enough? Lastly, I continue to get comments to the effect of "you guys are going to need a bigger
stage." Wouldn't that be great!? We are certainly not about limiting anyone's desire to serve, musically speaking, so please let me know if you'd like to join us! See you Sunday!

Youth Ministry at Ardmore
Weekly Youth Night
Every Sunday from 4:30pm-6:00pm youth in grades 6-12 gather for time together. Meet at the side door of the
parking lot for snack at 4:30pm. After snack, we all go to the youth room for time together in God's word. At
5:55pm we close in prayer and all go to the side parking lot to be picked up. For youth who go to scouts immediately following, a leader will escort them to the scout building. All youth are welcome! If you have any
questions contact Joe Hout at [email protected]
During March, they have spent time talking about being a tree like in Psalm 1, the example of Christ's humility
in Philippians 2, a lesson on "What is the Bible?"
from the Bible Project series, and a conversation
about Social Media and using it for the glory of
God (1 Cor. 10:31). A big thank you to Joette
Unks for coordinating host parents for snack.
Thank you to Sarah Patten, David and Blake
Ware, Cindy Bullock, Milton Kern, and Joette
Unks for hosting in the past weeks!
The Compassion Experience
Sunday, April 9, 3:00 - 6:00 pm
Ever wonder what life is really like in other parts of
the world? What if you could experience it for yourself? The Compassion Experience will bring you as
close to another country and culture as you can get
without a passport. This interactive, immersive display allows you to step into the life of a child who
has suffered under the crippling weight of poverty.
But the journey does not end there.
In the span of 20 minutes, you will travel with that
child from hardship to hope. And in the midst of
hope, you will see that child's story transformed
through the support of Compassion and the child's
life-giving relationship with a sponsor. Ardmore UMC
youth with have the opportunity to experience this
life-changing event!
Winston-Salem Interfaith Tour
Sunday, April 30, 1:30 - 6:00 pm
Winston-Salem’s interfaith tour will observe its 10th
anniversary in April with visits to Annoor Islamic Center, the Church of Latter Day Saints meeting house
and Temple Emanuel on Sunday afternoon, April 30.
After the tour, we will gather with all the groups to
enjoy a pizza dinner. An important opportunity to
get to know our neighbors, as well as to have important conversations about what we believe as
United Methodists and why we believe it. All youth,
parents, and friends are invited to join for this afternoon together. Meet at church parking lot at
1:30pm and return at 6:00pm.
Senior Moments
I think it is safe to say, “Happy Spring!” The flowers
and trees are blooming and the weather is nice…
most of the time.
It is a busy time at Ardmore as we prepare for
Easter. The Lenten activities on Wednesday evenings have been great. Learning about the hymns
we sing is very interesting, especially for those of us
who don’t have a musical background. Many
thanks to Dreama Lovitt, Pastor Bev, and Pastor Joe
for their work on this Lenten activity.
As always, I have enjoyed visiting and calling my
Ardmore friends who aren’t able to participate in
church activities as they would like. It is so interesting to sit and talk about Ardmore in years past when
they were active and their children were growing
up. I have learned so much from these special
friends. Thank you, seniors, for making my day on
many days. Remember to let me know if you want
to visit with me or if you’d like to call or write to some
of the seniors. I will be happy to give you contact
information.
Our March Young at Heart program was very nice.
It was good to have Lisa Wishon with us. She and
her friends, Rex and Donna Cranfill, were very enjoyable musicians. It’s nice to have friends who are
willing to entertain for you. Susan Meny came by
6
from The Shepherd’s Center to tell us more about
their services. She apologized for missing our February gathering. I appreciate Della Scott for helping
share information about their programs in Susan’s
absence. Thanks to the others who also shared
some of their experiences at the Shepherd’s Center.
Our April Young at Heart program will be Tuesday,
April 25, 2017, at 11:45 am in Bob Martin Hall. Special
guest, Steve Perkins, a retired police officer will be
with us to share his “Life from a Policeman’s Point of
View.” Come and hear Officer Perkins and invite a
friend. Lunch will be $ 8.00/person. Reservations are
required by Wednesday, April 19.
As I write this article, it has begun to rain. Aren’t we
supposed to have showers and rainbows in April?
That reminds me of a quote I recently read: “The
way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you got to put
up with the rain.” (Dolly Parton) Enjoy the spring and
the rest of Lent and have a very happy time with
family and friends during the Easter weekend. Easter
is a very special time that we remember Christ and
his love for all of us. Easter Blessings!

Outreach Opportunity
Our Father’s Table Food Pantry is exploring the possibility of expanding our ministry to include delivery to seniors and disabled people
who are homebound and living within the Ardmore community. If you
know someone in our congregation or in the neighborhood needing a
bag of groceries and a hot meal delivered to them monthly, contact
Eva Jane Felts (336) 971-3851/[email protected] or Mary Jo Brewer (336)

Just some of the many volunteers that assist at Our Father’s Table Food Pantry,
sharing God’s love and Ardmore UMC fellowship with the community.
In light of the numerous recent natural disasters in the southeastern United
States, (Hurricane Matthew, wildfires in Tennessee and Western North Carolina, floods in West Virginia and South Carolina, and tornadoes in Georgia,
Alabama, and Mississippi), we’ve received a request from the chair of our
WNCC Committee on Relief to assemble and collect UMCOR Health Kits
and Bedding Kits.
All churches across our conference are encouraged to participate in this
disaster response drive by preparing UMCOR Health Kits or UMCOR Bedding Kits as an act of mercy and
devotion during the Season of Lent.
Lists describing the contents needed to compile these kits, along with instructions, are located in the
attendance pew pads. Please...take a list. And during this time of reflecting on our gifted unconditional love,
may we in response give the same.
Please bring completed kits or items needed for individual kits to the Missions Closet located beside the
Through-the-Week School Office on the first floor, by Sunday, April 30. Shelves are designated for receiving
your gifts of these much needed HEALTH and BEDDING kits.
Thank you in advance for your response.
The United Methodist Men Deliver
More than Pine Needles
10
‘Alright men, form a line!’....’We gotta get this trailer unloaded’...’Ok, this is going to be a BIG order!’...Did you
get a biscuit yet? Yeah, I’ve had 3!’....’Careful, this bale’s a little loose’...’Watch it, son, a truck is coming
through’...’Ok boys, we need all hands on deck!’
Each year, the Ardmore United Methodist Men’s group hold their pine needle sale, and each year we are
thrilled to see that the support grows more than the last. From those that ordered the pine needles, to those
that lined up the pick-up trucks for delivery, from those that prepared the breakfast in the morning to those
that made call after call to sell bale by bale; our 2017 drive was no different. We had another well-oiled machine and got to work to have a very successful year which means we can put that money to good use as
stewards of Jesus Christ.
By the numbers
Bales of pine needles ordered: 3,080
Bales of pine needles delivered over two weekends: 3,070
Total orders: 169
Broken bales: 10 -- donated to the church to spread
Also, our previous record of how quickly we unloaded a trailer of more than 1,500 bales of pine needles was
shattered this year when Milton Kern unloaded the last bale after 1 hr. and 50 mins. That may not seem like
much until you open the doors of a full trailer!
Our Methodist Men's group is blessed with strong leaders who care for Ardmore United Methodist Church, the
Ardmore community, and beyond. What’s even more special, and a trait of any good leader, is their commitment to shape new leaders. This year we saw a noticeable increase in our scouts and younger folks come
out to lend a hand and it made a huge difference! Some of these young men have come out in previous
years, but the difference here is that they are growing up and stepping into leadership roles. Some that once
came out 2-3 years ago are not kids anymore, but young men that are learning how to accept responsibility
and become leaders themselves.
A very special thank you to all those that participated in the pine needle sale, both helping with sales and
deliveries and through support through orders. It is very much appreciated!
Ardmore United Methodist Men
I am certain that there is nothing better
