General Information
To help your child to be organised you may wish to use this checklist of
items required in school.
Water bottles will be refilled in school
Indoor and outdoor PE kit will be needed throughout the week –
Children will need a navy t-shirt with school logo, navy shorts, pumps
or trainers and a navy tracksuit (for outdoor P.E.)
We have PE timetabled for a Wednesday and Friday, however we advise
that PE kit is brought to school on a Monday morning and taken home on a
Friday so that it is in school in case we need it.
We will swim on Monday afternoon in the Autumn Term.
Learning logs will be sent home every three weeks. The children will have two
weeks to complete a research based project, together with related spellings.
Maths
Maths lessons take place on a daily basis and follow the National
Curriculum The Curriculum is divided into six strand areas as follows:
Number and place value
Addition and Subtraction
Multiplication and Division
Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
Measurement
Geometry and Shape
Statistics
Each strand has identified objectives that the children work towards throughout the year. It is essential
that you practise the following areas weekly with your child:
• All addition and subtraction facts for each number to 100, e.g. 46+54=100.
• Sums and differences of multiples of 10 and number pairs that total 1000, e.g. 600200=400, 200+100=300, 600+400=1000.
• Multiplication and division facts for all the times tables up to 12 x 12.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
1. Mr Chen’s phone cost £264 for 12 months. He pays the same amount each
month. How much does he pay?
2. A bucket has a capacity of 4 litres. Fred turns the tap on. 200ml of water go
into the bucket every second. How many seconds does it take to fill up the
bucket?
3. Sanjay drinks 3/10 of his milkshake. What percentage is left?
English
English lessons take place daily and encompass all aspects of English, ranging
from Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing, spelling and handwriting.
Within Writing lessons, we teach specific grammar related objectives, often
through an engaging hook for their writing.
(Eg. Use of fronted adverbials for when in a recount for a Lighthouse Keeper)
We are trying to promote the whole process that a writer takes – from
planning and gathering ideas, to drafting, editing and improving and
producing a final piece.
Grammar, punctuation and spelling tests.
Reading
When teaching reading in Year 5, our main focus is on
comprehension skills.
We teach reading as part of English lessons. In addition to this,
your child will choose a ‘homereader’ book which they should
read at home, independently and with an adult. They will
have the opportunity to change this on a regular basis. As well
as English lessons and home readers, children will also have the
chance to visit the school library and have the opportunity to
take a library book home.
It is still essential that you hear your child read every day!

These include addition and subtraction facts, number bonds,
timestables and related division facts, as well as other useful
mental methods which support your child’s learning in Maths.

These words are taken from the National Curriculum
spelling lists. They also include suggested words from the rules
taught in class.
Your child will also get topic related spellings as part of their
Learning Log homework.
