Through s torytelling, s cience, songs , dance, games , and lots of great activities ~ we will learn ab out the flowers and plant life, fish, the nati ve animals, beautiful birds, exotic and endangered animals , traditions and cus toms , food, clothing, liter ature, numbers and phrases… so much to do! Each week has a theme, but lots of Hawaiian experiences and books will be a part of our day! We can’t wait for summer! (Ha waii , I lo ve yo u ! ) * Week 1 * June 5 – June 9 The kumu’s (t eachers) at Adobe Montessori School w elcome their new and continuing friends with a traditional Hawaiian greeting of leis and present them with their Hawaiian name! We’ll search the world over to locate the Hawaiian Islands, just like Captain Cook ~ who discovered the “Sandwich Islands,” as the Hawaiian isles were once called! Let’s explore the islands, archipelagos and the mysteries of a bubbling volcano! We’ll study the amazing hidden treasures the Hawaiian Islands hold for us. We’ll learn the parts of a volcano, build our own archipelagos, and have some “volcanic fun” with science experiments. We’ll have to take cover as our own Kaho’olawe volcano erupts! IT’S SURE TO BE A BLAAAAST! Story of the week: “Baby Honu’s Incredible Journey” by Tammy Yee Friday Movie: Lilo & Stitch Mo ana Mo tion (O c ean Mo ti o n ) * Week 2 * June 12 – June 16 Let’s catch the waves and sail out to sea! The ocean is an underwater adventure all its own. Sharks, whales, seahorses, starfish, jellyfish, otters, sea turtles, crabs… ocean life galore! There is so much to discover in this vast kingdom! We’ll be singing seashore tongue twisters, painting sand dollar necklaces, and making sea shell picture frames. Shell matching, great ocean stories, listening to music of the sea, and balancing on a “surf” board!! (Arizona style ~ dudes!) Don’t forget your sunscreen! Sun safety and water safety is SO important ~ whether in a Hawaiian paradise or in our steaming Arizona desert. We will learn about keeping ourselves protected from the sun and how to be super safe around water. SURF’S UP!! WHAT A GROOVIN’ WEEK! We will feel like true Hawaiian kamali’i (children) as we play traditional games, finger plays, and learn Hawaiian children’s stories. We will learn to dance the Hula and how to speak using the art of the “nohea” Hawaiian hand language. We will act as true kama’ainas (natives) when we make our own grass skirts, flower leis, “ipus” (drums), and dance the Huki Lau all week long! IT’S GOING TO BE A ROY AL LAH AI NA LUA WEEK!! Story of the Week: “What if Elephants Wore Hula Skirts at the Honolulu Zoo” by Joy Au Friday Movie: The Little Mermaid To o ty F rui ty * Week 4 * June 26 – June 30 Go mad for mangoes, pluck a papaya, go bananas, pick a juicy sweet pineapple, get a guava, and find the star in the carambola. Flavorful, yummy sweet, nutritious, exotic island fruit. From tasting games and smell matching, to the skill of picking the best fruit to eat, we’ll traipse all over the islands and learn where they grow. We’ll have fun with fruit counting and make fruity headbands with pineapple stamping. Let’s taste coconuts, mangoes, papayas, pineapples and sugar cane and make banana boats! We’ll even make our own fruity pizzas (yummy & healthy too!!) On Friday we’ll shake our pat ooties to “Toot y Fruit y~All~Rudy!” A WHOMP B ATA LO OP A A WHOMP BAM BOOM!! (H appy B ir thday Ame ri ca! ) * Week 5 * July 3 – July 7 A big Hip-Hip-Hooray as we kick off our 4th of July week ~ Hawaiian style! We’ll celebrate both our nation’s independence and the day that Hawaii officially became the 50th stat e. American flags, Hawaiian flags, musical marching bands, and pat riotic songs will be part of the fun of America’s Birthday Week! We’ll make 4th of July windsocks with stars and stripes plus more fun arts and crafts! We’ll make a Hawaiian State Book and learn the state bird, flower, tree, state seal, the names of the eight islands – plus, the official flower of each island! For the grand finale on Thursday, we will celebrate with watermelon, angel food cake, blueberries and cool whip ~ Red, White and Blue Galore! Let’s compare objects that change textures when they get wet, discover what objects sink and what objects float, and compare rainwater to saltwater. Let’s listen to the sounds of a rain stick – and then make our own rain stick! And what is the most beautiful sight after a good rain? A rainbow!! Rainbow art projects, color mixing, and play dough fun! Our grand finale will be a special Friday surprise with some chillin’ cool snow cones and a Hawaiian pizza party! ALOH A‘OE!
