Planet J Periodic Table
The periodic table is one of the most useful tools used by chemists. The periodic law is believed to be
universal so that it should hold true not only on Earth but also throughout the universe, including the
newly discovered planet…Planet J. (For the sake of this activity we are going to agree that there is
intelligent life on Planet J.)
The intelligent life on Planet J has made contact with scientists on Earth; Planet J’s languages have been
translated, and scientific information has been exchanged. The planet is composed of the same
elements as Earth. However, the inhabitants of the planet have different names and symbols for them.
Strangely, but luckily, there are no transition or synthetic elements on Planet J.
The data:
1. Alkali metals include Chum (Ch), Kuxor (Ku), Fekugh (Fk), Nekor (Nk), Phazow (Pw) and Zhiz (Zh).
Phazow (Pw) is the heaviest of all of the atoms in the group and is radioactive. Kuxor (Ku) is the least
reactive of the Alkali metals. Chum (Ch), Fekugh (Fk) and Phazow (Pw) are highly reactive and will
burst into flames when exposed to Zezor (Ze). Chum (Ch) is the lightest element of the three.
Phazow’s (Pw) neighboring element to the right is Rixiph (Rx). Rixiph (Rx) is also a heavy, radioactive
element.
2. The Halogen gases include Bexor (Bx), Jukuph (Jk), Kilhuor (Ki), Theyig (Tg) and Uzhior (Uz)
Of the Halogen gases, Kilhuor (Ki) has the highest electronegativity and Theyig (Tg) has the largest
atomic radius of the group. Bexor (Bx) is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid at ordinary
temperatures.
3. The Noble gases include Julhor (J), Pazhor (Pz), Qofor (Qo), Qukor (Q), Warg (Wg) and Yeyor (Yy).
Of the Noble gases, Pazhor (Pz) has the greatest atomic mass. Julhor (J) is the most abundant of the
Noble gases. Qukor (Q) is the lightest of the Noble gases.
4. Cufor (Cf), Kilhuor (Ki), Kuxor (Ku), Maguj (Mj), Shixoy (Sh), Yeyor (Yy), Zezor (Ze) and Zhoror (Z) are all
in the same period. Kuxor (Ku) and Maguj (Mj) are metals that form cations, +1 and +2 respectively.
Cufor (Cf) is a metalloid with the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p1.
5. Aheuor (Ah), Junuq (Jq), Razhex (R), Rozhor (Ro) and Shixoy (Sh) all belong to the same mixed group.
Shixoy (Sh) and Aheuor (Ah) are both nonmetals, Razhex (R) and Rozhor (Ro) are both metalloids, and
Junuq (Jq) is a metal. Between Razhex (R) and Rozhor (Ro), Rozhor (Ro) has a smaller value on the
electronegativity scale.
6. Vulhoq (V), Gatit (G), Zhiz (Zh) and Nekor (Nk) are all essential to the human diet. Gatit (G) is
important in maintaining health bones and teeth. Vulhoq (V) is key in muscle function and
metabolism. Nekor (Nk) and Zhiz (Zh) help with nerve impulse. Zhiz (Zh) has valence electrons in a
fourth energy level and Nekor (Nk) does not.
7. Iguor (Ig), Lhejor (Lj), Qush (Qu) Yilor (Yi) and Zhoror (Z) are also members of a mixed group. Zhoror
(Z) is a nonmetal. Iguor (Ig) and Yilor (Yi) are both metalloids. Qush (Qu) and Lhejor (Lj) are both
metals. Qush (Qu) and Lhejor (Lj) when mixed together form an alloy called pewter. Lhejor (Lj) is the
heaviest. Zhoror (Z) bonds to form so many different compounds that is has a branch of chemistryOrganic Chemistry-devoted to studying it and its compounds. Iguor (Ig) is the 2nd most abundant
element on in planet Earth’s crust.
8. Lhator (Lh) has 3 natural occurring isotopes: protium, deuterium and tritium and it the element with
the smallest atomic radius.
9. Yilor (Yi) is in the same period as Fuxor (Fx), Phocor (Ph) and Razhex (R). Phocor (Ph) has six valence
electrons. Like Phocor (Ph), Uyior (Uy) and Chepuq (Cp) have 6 valence electrons. Uyior (Uy) has the
highest electron affinity of the three.
10. Cezhex (Cx) and Zezor (Ze) are in the same family. Zezor (Ze) has two common allotropes: Ze2 and
Ze3. Cezhex (Cx) is the most metallic of the 16 elements.
11. Maguj (Mj) and Zsezor (Zs) are in the same family. Maguj (Mj) is the lightest member of Group 2.
Zsezor (Zs) provides the bright crimson red color in beautiful fireworks displays.
12. Jawodor (Ja) and Thivuor (Tv) and in the same family as Aghuor (A) and Fuxor (Fx). Thivuor has the
largest atomic radius of all elements in the family. Aghuor (A) by location should be a metalloid, but
is a metal with a +3 oxidation. Aghuor (A) is the most abundant metal and Fuxor (Fx) is used in some
thermometers because it remains a liquid over a wide range of temperatures.
13. Fekugh (Fk) and Axeor (Ax) are in the same period as Thivuor (Tv). Fekugh (Fk) has the lowest
ionization energy of the three elements.
14. Aheuor (Ah) has 3 allotropes: red aheuor, white aheuor and black aheuor.
15. Cufor (Cf) is the only metalloid in group 13.
16. Phazow (Pw) has the lowest electronegativity of all of the elements.
17. Wareg (Wg) and Jukuph (Jk) are in the same period.
