Syllabus: Medical Terminology
Course Overview:
Students will gain knowledge of medical terminology, vocabulary and abbreviations used in
health-related careers. Students will practice formation, analysis and reconstruction of terms.
There is an emphasis on spelling, definition and pronunciation. The class is an introduction to
operative, diagnostic, therapeutic and symptomatic terminology of all body systems related to
health careers. Students interested in the health care field are invited to participate in Health
Occupation Students of America (HOSA) Club which sponsors community service projects and
members are able to compete at the state and national events.

Behavior/Attendance Policy:
You are responsible for any work missed due to absences. Participation/Activities missed due to
unexcused absence may not be made up and will count as a zero (they are excluded from grade
if absence is excused). Points will be deducted for late work (exception – one day per day of
absence allowed if excused). Once the assignment has been returned to classmates, only halfcredit is possible for late work. Retakes on tests or assignments are averaged with original
grade. Extra credit is not offered to replace missing or low grades, only to expand learning
beyond the planned classroom experiences.
