Bilbao
Bilbao is located in the Iberian Peninsula, in its eastern Atlantic watershed -latitude: 43º
15’ 42” N, longitude: 2º 55’ 43”
43 W-, 19 meters above sea level, and it covers an area of
41.6 square kilometers.. Its impressive transportation infrastructure connects it to the rest of
Europe by air, land and sea.
Bilbao is the core of a metropolitan area with more than one million inhabitants.
inh
Since its
foundation, more
ore than 700 years ago, it has been the fundamental factor and the main
socio-economic
economic axis around which
w
the Biscay region has set its modernization process in
motion.
From Bordeaux to A Coruña, Bilbao’s
Bilbao hegemony is undisputable.
utable. No other city has better
reasons to be the economic, financial, cultural and tourist capital of the region.
PINTXO ROUTES:
People from Bilbao, like the rest of the Basque people, cherish two passions: food and
friendship. They nurture them at the same time otherwise they lose some of their allure. All
of this is conducive to the fact that the Villa understands snacking as an informal
i
gettogether without prior arrangement. In other words, there are groups of friends who do
not need to arrange to meet because they know that at a certain time every day of the
year; they will come across someone having a pintxo in the bar they regularly
reg
go to.
Each area has its clientele and each person from Bilbao

has his/her friends. This is the way it is. However, for the visitor, Bilbao offers an excellent
opportunity to savour the pintxo food culture to the full in seven different areas.
BILBAO NIGHTLIFE:
The character of the locals in Bilbao is so cheerful and open that it shows in the
atmosphere. So don’t miss the nightlife of this city. For starters, you can enjoy the typical
streets to go for a drink in Ledesma, Casco Viejo or Ensanche.
The street cafés, some with spectacular views, are a great alternative. Of course, you’ll
find cosy bars, some with a bohemian or indie touch, to have a beer. As the evening
goes on, the modern pubs where you can enjoy a drink will fill up with people.
The night, which is at its wildest at weekends, goes on. The coolest places to hang out
and their sophisticated nightclubs await you with open doors. In Bilbao, you will certainly
find an evening to your taste.
FAMOUS CHARACTERS
Sculpture, busts, commemorative plates, streets, documents, poems… recall the men
and women of Bilbao who have left their mark on the city in fields as diverse as literature,
music, sports… or who have contributed to the development and improvement of the
city.
Two names are linked to the origins of Bilbao. The first is of Don Diego Lopez de Haro, the
founder of Bilbao and after whom the main street of the city, the Gran Via, is named and
whose sculpture can be seen in the Plaza Circular square. The second is that of his
niece, María Díaz de Haro. One of the longest streets in Bilbao’s Ensanche is named after
her; the city’s other founder (her uncle, Don Diego, laid claim over her rights). That iconic
district is also home to the Alameda Mazarredo, dedicated to Admiral José de
Mazarredo Salazar, considered to be the best tactician of the 18th century.
As regards charitable works, Casilda de Iturrízar, known as the Widow Epalza after the
death of her husband, deservedly had the largest and most central park in the city
named after her. A street and a monument also remember this illustrious lady of Bilbao
who used her huge fortune to support hospital, charity and cultural works.
Miguel de Unamuno is one of the great names of the history of Bilbao. Considered to be
one of the leading figures of Spanish literature, he was born in the Casco Viejo, where a
square and a bust pay tribute to him. The anniversary of the birth of this intellectual
belonging to the Generation of 1898 is celebrated on 29 September.

The origin of the current museum is in the first Fine Arts Museum, founded in 1908 and
opened in 1914 and the Modern Art Museum, opened in 1924. Both institutions and their
collections were united in 1945, the year that the old building was constructed. In 1970
the modern building was added, and in 2001, a major reform finally gave the museum its
current appearance, expanding the exhibition space for the works of art by 1000 square
meters.
The collection of the Fine Arts Museum, which opened
in 1914, brings together over seven thousand works of
art, including paintings, sculptures, works on paper and
applied arts, with an outstanding heritage spanning
from the twelfth century to the present. It contains
important examples of ancient, modern and
contemporary painting and has a special interest in the
Spanish school of art and in Basque artists, by whom it
has a large collection of works.

The Ría de Bilbao Maritime Museum was opened in 2003.
Designed by the architect Juan Francisco Paz, the museum is
located under the Euskalduna Bridge. The building, with a surface area of 7,000 square
meters, is built using stone, steel and wood, materials that recall the ones used in
shipbuilding. The lobby is the pivotal point of the whole inner space, as it provides
access to the exhibition area, the store, coffee shop, workshops and media library. The
outside area of the museum is the old dry docks of the former Astilleros Euskalduna
shipbuilders, and has a surface area of 20,000 square meters.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT NEAR BILBAO
Portugalete:
BISCAY BRIDGE
Metro stop: Areeta / Portugalete
The Biscay Bridge was inaugurated on 28 July 1893, becoming the first transporter bridge
in the world built of metal. The design was the work of Alberto Palacio y Elissague, also
known for his part in the construction of the Crystal Palace in the Retiro Park in Madrid.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006, the Biscay Bridge is a structure made
up of four iron towers 61 meters high, linked by a cross beam 160 feet in length, located
45 meters above the sea. The transport of vehicles and passengers is carried out by a
hanging carriage or gondola, which is suspended from a 36 wheel trolley that is 25
meters long and travels along the rails of the horizontal section.
Recently, the Biscay Bridge, known to locals as the Puente Colgante and a link between
Portugalete and Getxo, abandoned the black colour that characterized its stylized iron
body, and was painted “Somorrostro Vein Red”, a tone that recalls the mining past of

the area and that will gradually age to resemble other iconic pieces of architecture such
as the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao.
To learn about this unusual bridge, there are visits that allow you to go up onto the
anchorage block, down to the terraces, to climb back into the elevator to go up along
the pedestrian walkway 45 meters above the river (the views from there are amazing)
and finally to use the transporter carriage to get to the other side. The complete tour,
with audio guide in four languages (Basque, French, English and Spanish), costs 9 Euros; if
it is a guided tour for a group, 45 Euros.

PUERTO VIEJO - GETXO
The setting of the picturesque Puerto Viejo, the Old Port of Algorta, a beautiful small
maritime enclave in the municipality of Getxo,
located barely half an hour from Bilbao by metro, is
truly unforgettable. It will steal your heart with its
small white cottages clustered together in steep
streets where bars “of a bygone age” still exist. A
very popular and lively place, where great cuisine,
with fish and shellfish as star items on the menu,
provides one of its highlights. Groups of friends
gather outdoors to enjoy a drink and taste exquisite

views over El Abra Bay.
You will fall in love with you the charm of the Puerto Viejo and you will feel transported
back to the era when skilled Algorta sailors helped vessels heading to Bilbao to sail in and
out of the estuary. The Puerto Viejo forms part of the monumental ensemble classified as
a Cultural Asset by the Basque Government Department for Culture.
The best way to reach the Puerto Viejo is by metro. Take Metro Bilbao line 1, going to
Larrabasterra or Plentzia, and get off at Algorta station. This pretty little spot is just a short,
easy stroll from the station.
SANTURTZI
Santurtzi proudly conserves its past as a major fishing port on the Bay of Biscay. Although
there are no longer so many boats, it still maintains an important fleet.
The monument to the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of the town and of fishermen,
watches over all vessels from the harbor. Its seafaring tradition can also be felt in the
building of the Fishermen’s Guild and on the beautiful Queen Victoria promenade,
which runs alongside the River Abra.
And, of course, in the atmosphere in its restaurants. We recommend that you try its
famous sardines, the authentic hallmarks of this town. Santurtzi is reached in half an hour
and you can travel by metro or train, as well as by car or bus. But the best option it is on
foot from Portugalete.

BY SEA-FERRY
The Port of Bilbao, one of the most important transport and logistics centers on the

ferry moors 20 minutes from the city centre, at the dock in Zierbena (quay A3). Twice a
week it transports people and vehicles to and from the city of Portsmouth in the United
Kingdom. The crossing takes 24 hours, or 32 if you choose the option with a stopover in
the French port of Roscoff.
