Volume XVII, No. 9 September 2013 Library Card Sign-Up Month: Sign Up & Drive The Carol Stream Library is celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month in September. Drive over and sign-up, renew, or refer a friend and be entered into a drawing for weekly drivingrelated prizes: gas cards, drive-thru restaurants, oil changes, car washes, driving ranges and more! Feel like you’re spinning your wheels? Your Library card gives you access to thousands of books, movies, and CDs to engage your mind. At a roadblock? Use your library card to check out downloadable eBooks and audiobooks for your commute. Navigate our website for access to all of our eResources. Kids driving you crazy? The Library has lots of programs and materials to entertain them too. Cards are issued to Carol Stream residents at no charge upon presentation of a signed application and two forms of identification. One must be a photo I.D. and one must supply both the name and current address of the applicant. A parent or legal guardian must sign a child’s application and supply the required verification of residency in person. Already have a Library card? If you refer a friend or renew your card, you will be eligible for prizes too. So drive to the Library and get your card today! An Evening with the Illinois Poet Laureate Thursday, September 19, 7:00 p.m. Author reception, 6:00-6:30 p.m. Registration is requested. Come meet Illinois Poet Laureate Kevin Stein. Stein will read from his new book, Wrestling Li Po for the Remote and answer questions from the audience. Before the reading, the Friends of the Library will host a reception for the poet. Come early for a chance to meet Stein in a more casual setting. Refreshments will be served. Stein has published six full-length poetry collections, two poetry chapbooks, three scholarly books, two poetry anthologies, and numerous poems and essays published in journals as well as anthologies. In December 2003, the Governor of Illinois named Stein Illinois Poet Laureate, filling the position previously held by Howard Austin, Carl Sandburg, and Gwendolyn Brooks. Preschool Story Programs Registration required Fall begins a new monthly format for our popular story-time programs. Sessions will now be offered three weeks of the month, nine months of the year. This means more flexibility for families and more fun for everyone! Each program will feature stories and activities geared to specific age groups and offer opportunities for caregiver/child interaction, an important component of early literacy development. Roald Dahl After-Hours Celebration Friday, September 13, 6:00–7:00 p.m. For grades 3-6. Registration required. A wise man once said, “Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” Come to a special after-hours party to celebrate that man, Roald Dahl. We will celebrate his stories and characters including Willy Wonka, Matilda, and the BFG. There will be lots of games, activities and some Dahl-icious refreshments. Tales for Twos & Threes The Library is the perfect place to spend time together! Bring the family in for an afternoon of good old fun! Set up a game of chess or checkers. How to Create a Podcast Tuesday, September 10, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Registration is required. New to Podcasting? Margaret Larkin of the Radiogirl podcast will help you get started. Learn how to record, edit and publish your podcast online. Larkin will conduct a sample podcast and explain the necessary equipment and software. You won’t need a computer or any equipment—just come, learn, and have fun! Teen Self-defense Workshop Saturday, September 7, 1:00-1:45 p.m. For ages 11-18. Registration is required. In this free workshop, teens will learn self-defense techniques from the Superstar Karate instructional staff. Comfortable clothing is recommended. Attendees will need to have a parent sign a permission slip provided by Superstar Karate. Space is limited. How to Go to College without Going Broke Tuesday, September 17, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Registration is required. For many families, the rising costs of tuition can make an already large expense frightening. Fortunately, you don’t have to tackle this daunting challenge alone. Cliff Morgan of U.S. College Planning will help you find ways to make paying for college more affordable. Morgan will show you ways to reduce the overall cost of a college education, including maximizing your need-based financial aid eligibility, targeting the right colleges for merit-based financial aid, and exploring tax-savings opportunities. The presentation will also help you understand the financial aid system. Several options — including scholarships, grants, and student loans — are available to families of all income levels. Start planning now before you begin filling out financial aid forms. Teen Advisory Board For ages 13-18 Are you interested in planning events for teens at the Library? Are you looking for a place to volunteer your time? Join the Teen Advisory Board! New members are welcome at meetings and may fill out an application and find out more about the Teen Advisory Board. Time spent volunteering for the board counts toward National Honor Society hours. Check the program calendar on the Library website for more details and an application. Refreshments are provided at meetings. English Conversation Practice Tuesdays, 10:00–11:30 a.m. All ESL (English as a second language) learners are invited to drop in to practice conversational English. No sign-up or preparation is necessary. Come when you can. This is an ongoing program offered in partnership with Literacy DuPage. E-Mail 101 Wednesday, September 18, 2:00-3:30 p.m. or Monday, September 30, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Registration opens on Tuesday, September 3, and is available only to Carol Stream Library cardholders over the age of 18. In this class, patrons will sign up for their own e-mail accounts and learn about how to send messages and maintain their inboxes. Library Property Survey The Board of Library Trustees of the Village of Carol Stream seeks the input of Carol Stream residents regarding future use of the Library-owned property located at 2N540 Kuhn Road. Residents 18 years of age and older are encouraged to take a short online survey available on our website and Facebook page. Your name, address and phone number are required to complete the survey. A written form of the survey is also available in the Library. Survey participants will be entered in a drawing for a $100 Amazon gift certificate.
