PULLMAN, WASHINGTON
By I. M. Ingham,
Extension Agronomist
Phosphorus is undoubtedly a limiting factor in the production of legumes on most western Washington farms. Analyses
of legume hays from phosphated fields show a significantly
higher percentage of phosphorus in many cases than hay from
unphosphated fields. Phosphate fertilizers encourage and increase the percentage of legume plants in pasture and hay
fields. Phosphorus is the factor which most influences growth
of the skeleton of an animal.
"A plentiful supply of available phosphorus in the soil
stimulates early development of an extensive root system and
tends to hasten plant maturity. Phosphorus has an important
function in the reproductive organs of the plant. Forage crops
produced on soils deficient in available phosphorus may cause
nutritional disorders in livestock."*
Phosphate fertilizer is available to farmers under the
Agricultural Adjustment Agency program. Superphosphate is
available. Order now, and the cost will be deducted from
subsequent soil building payments. To receive this benefit
the superphosphate must be applied to the fields before
November 1, 1943.
REMEMBER!
* You have a responsibility to put your farm in the fight,
producing a capacity in line with war needs.
* Begin now to make plans for 1944 production.
* In many cases phosphates increase the yield of legumes as much as 25 per cent.

agent, or the AAA county. committee.
