Reading:
 Make inferences about the varied features of literary nonfiction
 Analyze how literary essays interweave personal examples and ideas with factual information
to present a perspective on a situation or event
 Use a dictionary or a glossary to determine or confirm the meaning of words
 Understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of
poetry and provide evidence from text to support his/her understanding. Students are
expected to analyze the effects of diction and imagery
Writing:
 Write an interpretive response to a literary text that extends beyond a summary and literary
analysis
 Use and understand the function of restrictive and nonrestrictive clauses

Activities
Lesson 4B.1 (2 days): From I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings and “Caged Bird”
 Quick write activity: Have students free write about a mentor they have
known.
o Discussion activity: In small groups, create word webs over the
qualities of a mentor. Reference page 254 of the Holt McDougal
Literature textbook.

Vocabulary activity: Have students create a chart on a sheet of notebook
paper with three columns labeled “Know Well,” “Think I Know,” and “Don’t
Know.” Project the I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings vocabulary (worksheet)
and have students place the words in the three columns.
o Have students work in pairs and use dictionaries to determine or
confirm the definition of the vocabulary words.
o Have students complete Concept Map (worksheet) over 5 of the
words

(Optional) Visit thinkcentral.com either as a class or individually using the
keyword HML9-255 and visit the time line, author’s bookshelf, and notable
quotes for Maya Angelou. After, take the “Name Game” quiz as a class or
individually.

