C ................... ................... ................... ................... One of the most valuable life-saving techniques is CPR. But, what is CPR? CPR stands for cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Cardio means “of the heart” and pulmonary means “of the lungs”. Resuscitation is a medical term that means “to revive” – or to bring back to life. CPR can help a person who has stopped breathing and whose heart may have stopped beating to remain alive. Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, and nurses are all trained to do CPR. However, there are also many other people who know how to administer CPR, such as lifeguards, teachers, childcare workers, and maybe even your own parents. But, what happens during CPR? The person giving CPR – the rescuer – will breathe for someone who is not breathing on his/her own. This is called artificial respiration or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The rescuer first tilts the victim’s head back to open the airway to the lungs. Then, he/she pinches the victim’s nose and puts his/her mouth over the victim’s open mouth, and blows, forcing air into the lungs. In between these breaths, the rescuer will probably use both hands, one placed over the other, to press on the person’s chest several times in a row. These chest compressions move blood out of the heart that has stopped beating. CPR is a life-saving technique that can be learned by anybody. Many people choose to learn CPR so that they know what to do in an emergency situation, even if they don’t handle emergencies on a daily basis. CPR can help save lives. Do you know CPR?
