The houses and streets in nearly all our large
villages and cities are lighted with gas, which is
made from coal. In some places oil lamps are
still used, while in others the streets at night are
quite dark, being without gas or oil lamps.
The streets of our cities are paved with stones.
Coaches, carts, and wagons pass along the streets;
and on each side of the street is a foot-path paved
with small stones, bricks, or large flat stones, on
which the people walk.
