Honorary Degree Recipients
Dr. Jeanne Donlevy Arnold, Nursing Alum, Trustee, and Noted Philanthropist
Distinguished healthcare administrator and dedicated philanthropist, Dr. Jeanne Donlevy
Arnold ’83 of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, is a member of the Saint Joseph’s Board of Trustees.
As Chair of the Campaign to Create The Center for Nursing Innovation at Saint Joseph’s,
Dr. Arnold is leading the effort to raise $3.5 million, following a $1.5 million challenge grant
from the Harold Alfond Foundation. The new Center will address the severe nursing shortage
nationwide. Dr. Arnold earned her BS in professional arts from Saint Joseph’s innovative
program that enabled RNs from around the country to earn their bachelor’s degrees while
remaining in the workforce. A retired Senior Vice President of Good Samaritan Health
Systems in Pennsylvania, Dr. Arnold has been lauded as a longtime supporter of many
local, regional, and national organizations, receiving honorary doctorates from Pennsylvania
College of Health Sciences and Lebanon Valley College. She and her husband, Edward
H. Arnold, provided significant support to Pennsylvania State University and the Hershey
Children’s Hospital, where they were honored as 2009 Philanthropists of the Year.
Ron L. Phillips, Community Development Practitioner, Founder and Retired President
and CEO of Coastal Enterprises, Inc. (CEI)
Ron L. Phillips of Waldoboro, Maine, is a national leader in financial investment and
legislative initiatives that create economic opportunity for people and places at the margins of
the economy. Armed with a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary and
with completion of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program, Mr. Phillips’
career focused on international economic development, fair labor practices, global disparity
of wealth, and the challenges associated with inaccessibility of capital. When he relocated
to Maine, with his wife Suzanne, he addressed Maine’s social problems with new practices
aimed at equitable resource distribution. A prolific author, he has been recognized extensively,
including his appointment to the CDFI Fund Advisory Council of the US Treasury and his
receipt of the Ned Gramlich Award for Responsible Finance, his industry’s highest honor. As
Co-chair of Saint Joseph’s Mission-Aligned Business Advisory Council, Phillips’ expertise is
guiding the College’s strategic and sustainable economic development initiatives.
Kerry Weber, Catholic Author, Journalist, and Social Justice Advocate
Kerry Weber of New York City is the author of Mercy in the City: How to Feed the Hungry, Give
Drink to the Thirsty, Visit the Imprisoned, and Keep Your Day Job, which received a 2015 Christopher
Award, as well as awards from the Catholic Press Association and the Association of Catholic
Publishers. She serves as an executive editor of America magazine and as a co-host on America
This Week, a weekly radio program on SiriusXM 129, The Catholic Channel. In 2013,
Weber reported from Rwanda as a recipient of Catholic Relief Services’ Egan Journalism
Fellowship recognizing excellence in the Catholic media. A graduate of Providence College
and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Weber has previously worked
as an editor for Catholic Digest, as a reporter for the Catholic Communications Corps of the
Diocese of Springfield, and as a special education teacher on the Navajo Indian Reservation
in Arizona. Weber currently serves on the board of the Ignatian Solidarity Network, a
national social justice education and advocacy organization.

History
OF SAINT JOSEPH’S COLLEGE
From the time the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Portland, Maine, in 1873, they
dreamed of applying the educational goals of Sister Catherine McAuley, who
founded their order in Dublin, Ireland, in 1831. After working toward this goal,
the Portland Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas
founded Saint Joseph’s College in 1912 on the grounds of the Sisters of Mercy
Motherhouse in the Deering district of Portland. It was chartered by the Maine
Legislature in 1915. In 1949, the name of the College was changed, briefly, from
Saint Joseph’s College to The College of Our Lady of Mercy. When the Sisters
purchased the Verrill Estate and moved the College to Standish in 1956, they
reinstated the original name of Saint Joseph’s. Less than fifteen years later, in 1970,
Saint Joseph’s became a co-educational institution. Then, in 1976, the College
became a pioneer in distance education programs.
With more than a century of history, Saint Joseph’s College remains as Maine’s
only Catholic, liberal arts college, situated on the 474-acre campus on the shore of
Sebago Lake in Standish, Maine, where students and staff enjoy views of Mount
Washington and the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. The College
offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for men and women of all faiths and
ages through campus and online educational programming.
