Utility uniforms (BDUs, ABUs, ACUs MCCUUs, etc.) with long sleeves rolled down or jeans will be
used for the Obstacle Course to ensure safety. Sweat pants are not authorized. Gloves are also
required during the log run portion and optional, but advised during the O’ Course portion. Dixie
JROTC can provide gloves if you do not bring any. You will need to bring gloves if your team has
cadets with XL or XSM hands. This course is a teamwork event over a one-mile course that
includes crawling, running and other agility challenges.
(1) Any attempt by an instructor or cadet to stop the score sheet runner to review a score sheet will result
in disqualification. Noise making devices such as whistles and horns ARE NOT allowed. Any team or
observer using sound making devices will be disqualified from that event.
(2) The registration table will open at 0830. A Commanders’ Call will be held at 0900 hours and all teams
are requested to have a representative present. The competition will begin at 0945 hours and will conclude
at approximately 1500 hours with the presentation of awards.
(3) There will be a 30 minute lunch break from 1130-1200. We are having Jimmy John’s cater the lunch. It
will include an 8 inch sub sandwich, chips and an apple. Dixie will provide a free bottle of water. Cost is
$5.25. Dixie will also have a concession stand to buy snacks and cold drinks.
(4) There will be several water stations available with 5 gallon coolers. Please make sure your cadets bring
refillable water bottles. Water can also be purchased at the concession stand. Dixie will also have an aid
station with a certified EMT for injuries, emergencies, etc.
Team Registration: Please register early if you plan to attend. No school will be entered into the
competition until the Registration Form and all entry fees are received. This meet will be held regardless of
weather (although some obstacles may be closed during downpours.)
Please direct all inquiries to SMSgt Morgan Hager at 435-634-4338, 435-669-5294 (cell) or email
[email protected]. We look forward to the high level of competition expected from this
Obstacle Course Challenge. Please do not hesitate to call or email if we can be of assistance.
The cutoff for entering is Friday 3 October 2016. Your entry form must accompany your registration and
payment. *** Please note the cancellation policy. Prior to Friday 3 October, 2016, a school/team may
withdraw and receive a full refund. After Monday, 3 October 2016, NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN. The
obstacle course cost us thousands in fundraising dollars, and we are certain you will enjoy this unique
opportunity to challenge your cadets.
CHALLENGE TEAMS (i.e. Obstacle Course, Caterpillar Traverse, and Tractor Tire Flip) WILL
CONSIST OF 4 MEMBERS AND TUG O WAR TEAMS WILL CONSIST OF 10 MEMBERS. All other
events are individual, including the option for an individual to accomplish the Obstacle Course/Run
separately from a team (without the log used in team competition).
Please indicate the events you wish to enter and return the registration form by Friday 3 October 2016,
with the entry fee payable to: DHS JROTC, 350 East 700 South, St. George, Utah 84770.
Log Run/ Obstacle Course
A 4-person team will start the Obstacle Course by running with a 6.5’ log for a 1 Mile track run. Failure to
hold the log for the entire run will result in disqualification for that event. Switching shoulders is allowed for
comfort. Log must rest on shoulders or arms for the entire time and runners must be in a single file line.
After the third lap on the track, teams will drop the log in the designated location (basically, where you
picked up the log – DO NOT DROP IT ON THE TRACK OR ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD!). Then, jog as a
team in single file to the East gate of the Obstacle Course, and proceed with each obstacle in order. Your
time is recorded as the last member of your team runs through the gate where you entered (East Gate).
Teams must stay together! No individual member is allowed to proceed to the next obstacle until his/her
entire team has negotiated the current obstacle.
The Obstacle Course Physical Release Form (see last page of SOP) must also be filled out by each
participant and turned in by the day of the challenge. If the Release Form is not filled out, the
person taking part in that team will not be allowed to compete, which will result in disqualification
unless a registered substitute can take over. Any substitution will incur a penalty of 1 minute
added time to the team’s total completion of the course.
Caterpillar Traverse
Four person teams will have 5 minutes to go from one end of the designated activity spot, to the other
using boundary hoops with all team members ankles taped or tied together (one person to another and so
on). All members of the team must remain tied together throughout the activity. Moving or touching of the
boundary hoops will result in a penalty and the entire team starting over.
Tractor Tire Flip
Four person teams will flip a tractor tire 100 yards in the parking lot adjacent to the Obstacle course. All
team members must participate during the event. Judges will ensure that all team members are
participating. Teams will be disqualified if all members are not engaged in the event. Further instructions
will be given at Commander’s Call.
Tug O War
10-person tug-o-war teams will compete until one team remains standing. The process is single
elimination. Once your team is defeated, you are out. A trophy will only be going to the first place winners.
NO SECOND OR THIRD PLACE TROPHIES IN THIS EVENT.
Push-up Contest
Participants will be given one minute to do as many push-ups as possible. A person will be designated to
count the total number of push-ups the participant completed. There will be no female style push-ups
authorized. The proper form for a single pushup, known as a press up, is to have the body perfectly
straight, both legs extended as far behind as possible to rest on the tips of the toes and the palms should
be pressed on the ground beneath the shoulders. Performing a standard push-up involves dipping the
chest downward until it nearly touches the ground and the elbows are bent at least to a ninety degree
angle. The body is pressed upward (straight back) until the elbows are almost locked. Rest is allowed, but
must be accomplished in the up position. Anything less will not be considered a push-up and therefore not
counted. Push-ups will not be included in the schedule. Participants will complete them in between the
other big events.
Drill Down
The Drill Down will be unarmed and conducted in accordance with AFI 36-2203, Personnel Drill and
Ceremonies. NO FAKE COMMANDS WILL BE GIVEN. Anyone not following the standards proscribed in
the regulation will find him/herself quickly disqualified.
List of all possible commands given during the Drill Down phase:
Right Face, Right Flank, Left Face, Left Flank, About Face, Column Left,
Column Right, Present Arms, Order Arms, Forward March, Eyes Right, Parade
Rest, Halt, Attention, Dress Right Dress, Ready Front, To The Rear March,
Change Step March, Hand Salute
A more detailed description of the events, including photographs and diagrams, will be given during the
Commanders’ Call at 0900 in Lecture Hall 100, DHS. It is required that each team captain attends this
meeting. The captain is the spokesperson, and all questions should be funneled through him/her. If the
meeting is not attended the team will be immediately disqualified unless proper reason is given upon
arrival.
JROTC classrooms will be designated dressing rooms. Please be considerate of school property! Refer to
the following pages for locations and maps of each event.
More specific instructions and safety information will be provided at the
Commanders’ Call the morning of the event.
Obstacles are organized into two columns of equal length (about 275’). Upon reaching the West end of the course,
teams will make a left‐hand turn to finish the 2nd half of the course, and will exit the same East gate they entered
to begin the course. A brief description of each obstacle is provided later in this SOP.
