Mrs. Lichtenberg’s Pitter Patter Reading: This week in reading we began learning about visualizing: creating a mental image based on what you hear happening in the poem or story. We practiced drawing the picture we made in our minds while listening to a poem called “The Balloon Man,” as well as the story In the Tall, Tall, Grass. We also listened to poems about school and discussed our mental images. In the afternoon we began A to Z Mysteries: The Lucky Lottery. Writing: This week we learned how to write a paragraph. We discussed the importance of a topic sentence, supporting our thinking with three details, and a conclusion or “wrap it up” sentence. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we practiced writing a paragraph where the students had to choose one food that they could eat on Thanksgiving instead of turkey. Then, they brainstormed three reasons why that would be a good choice. Finally, we wrote our ideas on a graphic organizer, which then helped us write a paragraph. The students then made turkeys out of construction paper that held up their paragraph. We also read Who Will Carve the Turkey This Thanksgiving, and the students chose an animal that they thought would be great at carving a turkey, maybe a shark because of its’ sharp teeth, or a tiger because of its’ sharp claws. However, they wrote following the prompt, “A ________ would be a good choice, but…” and were asked to tell why that animal they chose wouldn’t really work as a turkey carver. An example would be “A tiger would be a good choice, but it might eat the rest of the food too!” Math: This week in math we discussed measurement. We discussed standard units of measurement: centimeters, inches, feet, etc. These are units of measurement that are the same wherever you go. Nonstandard units of measurement are first graders, hands, pencils, etc. These are forms of measurement that can change depending on who or what you are using. If we measure how long something is in first graders, then measure the same object in adults, the length will be different because the size of a first grader and an adult are different. In class we measured a variety of objects using paper clip chains and cubes. Finally, we had a blast creating “measurement monsters!” Each student created their own monster using construction paper, then we used paperclips to measure different parts of the monster’s body. These are hanging in the hallway for all to see! I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend! I will see your sweet child on Monday!
