ВЕРЕСЕНЬ
Неліля, 4-ого
(Third Sunday after Pentecost)
“Seeing is believing” is the way that statement usually goes. However, in meditating prayerfully on the many
messages to be derived from the Scriptures and Lives of the Saints on this Third Sunday after Pentecost on June
21, 2015, I was struck by the realization that the opposite is a much better statement regarding what we see –
or, better, seem to see.
St. Matthew, in today’s Gospel, gives us Jesus’ words thus: “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your
eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.
If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” (6:22-23).
Note that our Lord is identifying the human being with his/her body – we are much more than an animated
body, but our body is certainly an indispensable part of our identity. We interact with the people and the world
around us chiefly by means of our body – of which the heart and the mind, the seat of emotions and thought
are part. How very much that interaction depends upon our perspective – the view that we have of people and
things as well as of ourselves!! How critical it is that that perspective be one that is as close as possible to the
way things really are – which may be quite different from the way we perceive them to be.
We are continually receiving humongous amounts of information. It is natural and normal that our minds filter
out most of it as unnecessary and even disruptive. But – and it is a most important “but” – that filter is set up
according to certain decisions that we make, consciously or automatically – without pondering them.
Today (June 21, 2015) the Church calendar (the Julian calendar, remember, is 13 days behind the Gregorian, so
June 21 on the civic calendar is June 8 on the Church/Julian calendar), commemorates the Hieromartyrs Tigrius
and Eutropius. A curious name – Tigrius. It seems to derive from “tiger”. A good many of us, who were in school
in the 60’s, remember memorizing William Blake’s Poem “The Tyger” (from his collection “Songs of
Experience”). It may be that Blake wrote this poem in response to painful questions arising from the death of
his brother Robert. The poem consists primarily of questions, the central one being: “Did He who made the
Lamb make thee?” Blake does not expect a simple answer – he wants to ponder the question. He wants to
deal with the paradoxes in this world, a most important exercise for everyone. An exercise which can deepen
our awareness of the goodness and love of the Creator Who makes us in His image – and that includes a most
crucial quality: the possibility of making real choices.
According to his Vita St. Tigrius was a Priest. He had been a slave and, as was not unusual in the case of male
slaves, a eunuch. Having obtained his freedom he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the Church and became
“a mild and kindly pastor”. (Not the sort of person we would associate with the name “tiger”). St. Eutropius was
a Reader – “pure, blameless and kind”. Notwithstanding these characteristics, the sort that would be most
desirable in good citizens, the high-ranking opponents of Archbishop John Chrysostom, exiled because of their
disapproval of his fearless call to a righteous and godly life, tortured and executed them as his supporters,
blaming them for a mysterious fire in the magnificent Cathedral of Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia).
The torturers’ vision was a dark one. They had made a choice: it was not to serve the eternal Source of all truth
and goodness, but rather to serve the quickly vanishing powers of worldly empire in which they vainly sought to
obtain lasting favourable status. In their view, the fire, which the populace that revered St. John saw as a
chastisement for his exile, had to be explained by blaming his supporters. They could not see the absurdity of
the charge: that one who was selfless in his dedication to the Holy One worshipped in that magnificent Temple
would inspire his followers to seek to destroy that Temple. But their vision was evil and their being was full of
darkness. Thus they put to death the Saviour’s Lambs – and eventually met the Tiger, the wrath of God. The
universe is not morally neutral. Its Creator, Source and Sustainer is God and His expectations of His creatures
are succinctly stated in the Ten Commandments and profoundly illustrated in the words and the life of Jesus of
Nazareth, our Lord, God and Saviour. Good brings good. Evil brings evil – that is the wrath of God, the Tiger.
Oh, how very important it is, dear brothers and sisters, that we make the right choice, the crucial one: to
believe, to follow and to serve (and to continually repent in humility of our frequent failures in serving) the
living God, fully revealed in the words and life of Jesus, and by the Holy Spirit Whom He has sent to live within
us, to make Him continually present within us and around us. As we pursue this choice, our vision will become
better and better! And thus we shall truly see! Thus, you see: Believing Is Seeing!
