Things to do before term starts: Familiarise yourself with the School of Engineering website ‐ particularly the ESO page and the ‘Level 1 Modules’ page http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/eng/eso/students/ http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/eng/eso/modules/year1 Clicking on the link to each module web page will allow you to access the “student resources” for each module, where you can find briefing sheets each week and lectures notes etc. 1. Join the engineering society (see flyer for details) 2. Join the Facebook group for your year group – Warwick Engineers 2013 Entry You do not need to buy any textbooks or safety equipment before coming to uni. It might be a good idea to look over A level maths notes and some physics topics (for example if you have done some mechanics or circuits before). But don’t panic – the course starts from basics. The main point of 1st year is to get everyone to the same level academically. You will be set 2 ‘briefing sheets’ to do each week (like homework) that will cover topics taught in lectures. You will not be given these briefing sheets; you have to find them online in student resources. Do not go to your tutorial saying, ‘I wasn’t given any work to do’. So long as you do the tutorial questions each week you should be fine academically. These will be gone over in tutor meetings weekly. The first 2 weeks: You will get your official timetable for the first 2 weeks in the first couple of days at uni, either online or in your pigeon hole. (Note – pigeon holes are located on the 2nd floor of engineering, along the corridor that starts outside F211. Pigeon holes are labelled with your name, and first year pigeon holes and the first ones you come to.) During these first 2 weeks you will have a reduced timetable, with lots of introductory lectures and labs. You will get given your timetable for the rest of the year at the end of week 2 (this will be available to you online). Lots will be going on at the beginning of term, including freshers fair, sports fair, free tasters of most societies and all the social events planned by the SU. In terms of academic events, the following shows some of what you should expect: ƒ Vice Chancellors Address – this is for all 1st years and takes place in Butterworth Hall at 9am on Monday 30th September ƒ Welcome to Engineering Talk – this is given by high profile members of staff within the school of engineering and serves to tell you all that you should expect of the coming year, from how to read your timetable to how to pass exams. Before this talk, you will be given a welcome pack by the school of engineering, and told how to register for optional modules, collect lab coats and books etc. So don’t panic if you feel you don’t really know what’s going on – this talk will explain everything! ƒ First Year Options Drop In Session – this is run by engineering society and will be on Monday 30th September from 2‐4pm in F106. This room is on the right as you walk into the school of engineering and we will tell you more about this event in our introduction talk. ƒ Engineering Society Introduction Talk – this will be held briefly in between 2 timetabled lectures, and aims to introduce you to some key members of the society, publicise our first socials and tell you a bit more about the first year options drop in session. ƒ Guest Speakers talking about what you can do with an engineering degree (timetabled) ƒ Introductory Lab Session ƒ First 2 Tutorials (these will continue to happen once a week) ƒ May start having first “labs” – these will be mainly computer based and will be teaching you how to use the software you will use throughout your degree, e.g. Solidworks, Electronics Workbench, Dymola ƒ Female engineers cocktail night in Leamington – meet on campus at 7pm ƒ Engineering Society Social – date of 1st social. This will be a friendly, very informal event. We hope that this has given you some guidance and forewarning about starting your time at Warwick. If you have any queries feel free to contact any members of the engineering society exec.
