Hubs
Our midweek Hub groups are one of the primary places in our church
community life where we learn to genuinely love, care and serve each
other. They are places where we seek to support, encourage and help
each other to work out our faith in the everyday situations and events of
life. They are places where we help each other grow as disciples of Jesus.
Below are the details of when Hubs meet and who leads them. If you
want to know more, don’t hesitate to talk to Bruce or any of the leaders:

Hospitality Month - Upcoming Event - JUNE
“We were new at church when hospitality
month took place last year. The Mekhail’s
family invited us to lunch at their home.
What a great time we had connecting with
them and others over delicious food. It’s very
heart-warming being new at church and to
be welcomed into their home.” - Tina
Hospitality month is coming! Over the 4 weeks in June, there will be
various options of things you could sign up for, and suggestions of
how we can practise hospitality. WATCH THIS SPACE.... more
information to follow in the next few weeks about this fun but
important focus that is key to us building community here at DCBC.
Cafe Wednesday - Revised opening date 24 May
It is with great excitement that we can announce
that Espresso Coffee and Hot Drinks will be
served at Cafe Wednesday.
In order to do this well we have delayed the
opening by two weeks allowing for the
installation of an Espresso machine and training.
It is not too late to be involved in this ministry
and we would still love to hear from you if you have a few hours free
on a Wednesday. Please contact Raewyn Booth, ph 027.486.1131.
Foodbank Coordinator Wanted
DCBC operates a small foodbank which is
available to assist people and families who are in
need of emergency food assistance from time to
time (primarily for people within the church and
our associated ministries).
Rose Tily has been the amazing Foodbank
Coordinator for the past few years and is now stepping down. We
want to say thank you to Rose for her tireless effort in making this
ministry really effective for those that need the additional assistance.
We are currently looking for someone to take up the Foodbank
Coordinator role. It does not involve a huge time commitment, but
does involve being available at times to prepare and take food parcels
to people and families when needed. If you have something like this
on your heart, or want to talk about how you could be involved, or
want further information on the role, then contact Mel McNatty, ph
454.6930 or email [email protected].
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he
may lift you up in due time.” —1 Peter 5:6
Today @ DCBC – Speaker is Tim Cooper
§ Communion will be served towards the end of the service.
§ Children’s Programmes: will be running throughout the service.
Children go directly to the children’s classrooms from 9:45am.
§ Intermediates: will be advised to go out to their programme
during the service.
§ Parents’ Room/Creche: a supervised creche is available for under
2yr olds in the Office Reception area. Parents are welcome to stay
with their children where they can view the service via a live video.
Newcomers’ Lunch — TODAY
If you are new to DCBC, we would love to get to
know you better. You are warmly invited to lunch
today where you will meet our leaders and find
out more about our church. It’s not too late,
please call Kate, ph 027.265.1730 if you would like
to attend.
Welcome into Church Membership
Congratulations to Lee, Cherie and Lily-Grace
Russell, Bryce and Kelly Adie on becoming
members of the church.
Church Members’ Meeting — TODAY 7pm Hanover Lounge
We held a really good church forum on 23 Apr,
where we discussed the way forward with our
space issues on Sunday mornings.
Coming out of the forum, there was a very real
sense that we should follow through with the
option of developing an overflow space for the
morning service rather than having two morning
services.
There was also a very real consensus that moving
forward with a modified form of Stage 2 of our church building (the
Foyer and Auditorium) was something that the Lord was calling us to
embark on.
We now need to officially confirm these things at a Church Members’
Meeting and vote on the steps required to action them.
We have walked forward in faith following and trusting the Lord and
seeing him miraculously provide for Stage 1 of our building; we are very
conscious that we must now walk in the same way for Stage 2.

IMAGO DEI: IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
The Bible tells us that we are created in the image and likeness of God
but what does this really mean? This Thursday, Jordan Jones will look
at what it means to be God's image-bearers and how that effects our
everyday lives.
Since Helen Geddes has stepped down in coleading the children’s area of our church, we
need to bring someone onto the team who
carries the children’s area in their heart. At the
church meeting, we plan to bring the name of
Jen Crump to be voted for a paid, 1 day per week
position. Jen, already co-leads in the children’s
area and comes highly recommended. We
believe that Jen will add to the life and
leadership of our church.
“My name is Jen Crump. My husband John and I have four young
boys, and we started attending DCBC almost 5 years ago.
I am originally from Vancouver, Canada. John and I lived in Tanzania,
East Africa, for 10 years before coming to live in Dunedin. I am trained
as a primary school teacher and I love working with children in church,
camp, and recreational settings. I am glad to be considered for a role
with the Pastoral Leadership Team and grateful for the wonderful
team of people that serve in the children ministries.”
Youth Group
DCBC's Youth Group has started after the school holidays and a
fantastic Easter Camp. This is the place to be if you are at high school

Youth Mission Discovery Trip - Cambodia & Malaysia
Calling all Yr12-13s. This is an exciting
opportunity to have your eyes opened to a
large portion of how our world live, and
gain an understanding of God's heart for
the poor. It is an opportunity to discover
what mission is about, and to begin to make
decisions about how to live life now in light
of so many living in poverty in our world.
This is a trip where we will be involved with
two of our church missionary couples: Kevin
and Leakhena in Cambodia, and Cheli and Mei in Malaysia. These guys
have much to offer. This is planned as a discipleship trip where, apart
from having a good time, you will be challenged in your walk with God.
If you want to know more details, talk to either Mike or Fi Simpson
027.688.3257, or Bruce Elder 021.127.8110
PS: There is some sponsorship available for this trip (on application)
Children’s Ministry
Kids programmes are all up and running for term 2.
Kids can be dropped off any time from 9:45am
onwards. After the service, you may collect your
children from Little Rockets and Little Orbit but please
do not collect your children from Orbit until 11.45am
unless it is absolutely necessary. We find that it is very difficult to run a
quality programme with the variation in service lengths that inevitably
occurs … so having a set end time is very important to us and the kids;
AND it also gives you the chance to talk to other adults and new people,
or have a coffee after the service without feeling like you have to rush
off. Intermediates start in the service, and then leave to their
programme just before the message begins.
For details on specific programme, please contact:
Intermediates - Yr 7 & 8
Caleb & Hilary Hickling
021.145.1926
Orbit - 6 yr olds to Yr 6
Kyra Jones
021.104.9052
Little Orbit - 4 & 5 yr olds
Frances Neill

Little Rockets - 2 & 3 yr olds
Pam Schofield
021.054.3075
Creche/Parent’s Room - < 2 yrs

Otherwise feel free to contact either of our Children’s Ministry
Co-leaders: Jen Crump 021.165.5912 or Kyra Jones 021.104.9052.
Need – Kevin and Leakhena
Kevin and Leakhena are our missionaries living in one of the poorer
villages in Cambodia. They have been saving for a vehicle; this is not a
luxury for them but something they very much need for themselves
and their ministry. They have the option on one at present but are
$2500US (app $3600NZ) short. Please pray for this need. Thank you.

There is a wonderful promise in our church mission statement - Isaiah

holding back in lengthening our cords, strengthening our stakes. As
we invest in doing this, not only physically but also spiritually in

Increasingly over the last few years, the Lord has been doing that;
sending some of our very best to serve him overseas. Over the next 4
weeks, we plan to profile each one of them in the newsletter and in
church on Sunday. As a church, we are committed to supporting and
encouraging these guys. Each of our missionaries have Home Support
Teams, or a Hub walking with them. We are also committed to
supporting them financially. A significant portion of that financial
support comes through our annual mission offering. This year, we are
bringing that offering on Sunday May 28th.

Each year, DCBC takes a month where we focus on mission, both
within our city and beyond our borders. Previously, we have produced
a Mission Journal with stories from our own people involved in
different forms of mission. This year, we are not planning a Mission
Month, but plan to keep highlighting mission throughout the year - a
mission year you might say. So sorry, no Mission Journal this year. Do
let us know if you miss it, we would appreciate your feedback!

The theme for this year is “Do not hold back" and we will highlight
specific mission focussed events as they come up during the year.
Over the next 4 weeks, we will highlight mission opportunities that are
available, Mission Apprenticeships, Mission Trips and other ways you
can grow your heart and prepare for mission in the desolate cities and
countries of our world - so watch out for those. Our prayer is that we
be a church that does not hold back in our mission call, and that as we
commit to growing disciples of Jesus here at DCBC, that the Lord will
send out many more of us to be his hands, feet and voice in our
broken and lost world. Join us in prayer for that.

DCBC offers a Ministry/Mission Apprenticeship every 2 years which is
designed for those who are serious about becoming more fruitful in
ministry and mission, and want to grow in this area. It involves
approximately 9 months commitment where you are challenged to
step out of your comfort zone to become more fruitful in serving and
sharing Jesus with those who do not know Him, particularly the
vulnerable. You will have the opportunity to learn and grow by being
actively involved in different ministry and mission opportunities, as
well as meeting regularly with fellow Apprentices to reflect and talk
through mission issues. You will also meet regularly with a mentor to
help you focus on ministry/mission issues and personal discipleship.
There will also be the opportunity to participate in a 2-3 week cross
cultural "mission" learning experience in a poorer community in
Cambodia (there will be a cost involved). If this is something you are
interested in, we want to hear from you. Contact Mel McNatty

After a year of dealing with that, and with sharing a communal
bathroom with 30 or more people, it was taking a toll. It's been a
lesson I needed to learn – that I can only contribute positively into
other people's lives if I'm taking care of myself, and that it's ok to need
good sleep and my own bathroom.

After several days of searching I found a new place – I have
experienced our Father's provision and care. I now have running water
in my house! I can't even begin to tell you how great it is to have that. I
get a kick out of hand washing clothes and dishes with such ease.

I now live very near to the small school that some of my team mates
run and teach at, so I have been helping out with morning lessons. We
recently received literacy training for a method that is being
implemented with pre-schoolers. It seems to be making a difference
especially in how engaged the kids are with the lessons - it's designed
to be fun and to hold their interest.

I'm really enjoying helping with it - and it's wonderful to have reached
a level of language where my presence there is actually helpful for the
other teachers, rather than adding an extra load to them. I also
continue with my weekly English club with five high school students.

I am currently back in New Zealand in Invercargill, because my Dad was
abruptly diagnosed with widespread cancer and is dying. I heard the
news, and was here three days later. Talk about a head spin! It's been a
big few weeks, on top of a big 18 months. But God's Spirit has been
closely with us. Each of us 8 kids got a chance to have important and
needed conversations with Dad. It's been a special family time, and a
chance to get to know each other better as adults.

Getting to know yourself has been a strong theme of the 18 months
I've spent in Indonesia. I thought I was going there to learn how to
love and serve “the poor” – so far at least it seems I'm there to learn
more about myself! How I tick, what drives me, what my needs are –
and to be challenged towards greater Christlikeness. Living closely
within a team must be a little like being newly married, I think!
