Heritage Week Mayo A week-long celebration of who we are and where we’ve come from, National Heritage Week is part of European Heritage Days programme of events. This is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union, in which over forty countries participate each year. The main aim of European Heritage Days is to promote awareness of our built, natural and cultural heritage and to promote Europe’s common cultural heritage. Here in Ireland we celebrate European Heritage Days with a full week of events throughout National Heritage Week. National Heritage Week is coordinated by The Heritage Council and its aim is to build awareness and education about our heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation. National Heritage Week is a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on not only our heritage but the work of the many volunteers who give their time to preserve and promote it. This booklet, produced by the Heritage Office of Mayo County Council, provides details of over 80 events taking place throughout the county to celebrate Heritage Week 2016. In addition to the events listed, the many heritage sites and centres in the county will be open during Heritage Week, so there should be something to appeal to everyone. The week will provide lots of opportunities to get out there and stroll through history this Heritage Week! Finally, sincere thanks to all the event organisers. Without all their hard work and commitment, Heritage Week in Mayo would not be possible. Heritage defines our sense of community, past and present, but more important is how it can contribute to shaping our shared future. Europe has unrivalled cultural heritage and history. In every historic building, in every stone wall, thatched roof or plasterwork ceiling lies a treasure and a human connection to place. European Heritage Days are a concrete example of how local communities can come together and celebrate heritage as a shared European value. More than 20 million visitors across Europe are expected to participate in the project in 2016. The Council of Europe launched the initiative in 1985, and in 1999 was joined by the European Union to create the joint action. European Heritage Days events take place in the 50 countries party to the European Cultural Convention.
