This bid is the logical next step from the current programme of activity and is closely aligned to the Strategic Economic Plan that we are submitting to Government in March. The focus on people entering employment and training will help to address a significant issue in the area and is one that affects many of the businesses we work with. The solutions included in the bid are important for South Yorkshire and we welcome their inclusion. It is vital that Government see this revenue bid alongside the SEP as the two are part of an overall focus that we have on investing in enabling infrastructure. We ask the Government recognises the longer term commitment that we are seeking through our SEP and the importance that we have placed on this type of activity as part of a balanced investment programme. We are looking forward to hear about the success of the bid and to continue working together, assisted by LSTF, to make the Sheffield City region a great place to work, live, visit and invest in. Our Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy sets out the importance for us as a Health and Wellbeing Board of a sustainable transport network in Sheffield and the wider region. Sheffield people have told us about the importance of healthy and connected communities, and our Strategy recognises the importance of the ‘wider determinants of health’ in building people’s health and wellbeing. We also have a dedicated work programme focussing on Food and Physical Activity, and support the Move More Plan to increase physical activity in the city. The Strategy also notes the importance of partners working together across organisational boundaries to actively look to improve health and wellbeing in Sheffield, including the involvement of areas that may not see health and wellbeing as being their direct business. Sheffield CCG is a strong supporter of the Long Term Sustainable Transport Fund bid for the region for the next financial year. We particularly value the inclusion of provision for support for the Move More challenge, as part of the Move More Plan. This Plan is a strategic plan for the next 5 years, to develop a culture of physical activity in our city, and the region around us. We see the key importance of this in improving health and wellbeing across the South Yorkshire region. The Move More challenge involves the use of movement sensors in a mass participation format. This will help us to gather accurate objective data on activity which will assist commissioners across the region in establishing a baseline of physical activity, and recognising the value of interventions that change these levels across time. The hypothesis is that it will also help in motivating and engaging the population in participation in physical activities. There is excellent synergy with the current 'Boost' schemes currently running in the region. Sheffield CCG supports the Move More Plan and will do all it can to ensure the success of these projects across the region. It is estimated that physical inactivity is costing Rotherham £22m a year (UKActive, 2014). This is a considerable burden on NHS and public sector resources. It is also damaging our economic agenda through working days lost. We recognise in Public Health that the cycling hub developments within the LSTF bid will significantly contribute to addressing this agenda and we will be working closely with the transport team to ensure it is linked into our local physical activity and public health structures. The focus on encouraging and supporting people to travel to employment and training will also help to address employment issues which contribute to the ill health of Rotherham communities. Employment is one of the foundation issues that effects health choices and opportunities, particularly in the more disadvantaged areas in Rotherham. We know that in the majority of cases being in work is good for peoples’ health and wellbeing. The solutions developed in the submission will support the delivery of our health and wellbeing strategy, across the 6 strategic themes; • Aspiration to expectations • Healthy Lifestyles • Long term conditions • Dependence to independence • Prevention and early intervention • Poverty I am happy to provide advisory support via the Public Health team in Rotherham Council to the LSTF leads, where appropriate to ensure this agenda fits with the Health and Wellbeing and Public Health agenda. British Cycling is formally working in partnership with all the South Yorkshire Local Authorities during 2014/15 to increase recreational cycling participation in the area. We are working closely with Council Sports Development teams, Transport Planning, Public Health Authorities and the County Sports Partnership to ensure a solid foundation and a joined up approach to cycling promotion in the area. We would like to continue with this successful partnership in future years as part of this bid. With the Olympic & Paralympic success of 2012, Tour de France successes of 2012 & 2013, we continue to successfully inspire further participation at grass-roots level. British Cycling will continue to work alongside Local Authority partners and PTE’s in the strategic planning for cycling in the area. Therefore, a sustained partnership during 2015/16 will capitalise on the momentum and inspiration we have already and will continue to create. Through our own research and insight from the DFT we know that over 70% of commuters were already recreational cyclists before they started to cycle to work, over 80% cycle to work to keep fit and that regular commuting sustains a regular cycling habit in general. Therefore our approach of mobilising a range of recreational cycling initiatives such as Mass Participation Events, Guided Rides and Social Cycling Groups is uniquely placed to increase and sustain cycling participation, commuting and a healthy local cycling economy. To deliver the partnership programmes British Cycling would match a £109,000 contribution from the South Yorkshire Local Authorities for 2015/16 with £207,000 (in kind). As such I can confirm, on behalf of British Cycling, our support to you in your application to the next phase of LSTF. This would enable more infrastructure development to provide even more opportunities and places for people to cycle and subsequently with our partnership work increase and inspire sustained cycling participation in the area. Through our extensive post 16 education programmes, many of the young people we work with come to us as NEETS or would fall into the NEET category without our engagement. The key point about the training we deliver is that it is part of an integrated plan developed by SYSRP to provide training for riders at all stages of their development. The IAM course is considered “advanced” training intended to hone skills, improve riding safety and prepare a rider to mentor and pass on their experience to others. Ken has really enjoyed his role as Travel Buddy and has a great sense of achievement from doing this role. This has given him a sense of responsibility and has increased his confidence. I have been meaning to ring your service for a few days… Parkwood Academy really values the support from the Travel Trainers. The work which both you and Kate have undertaken has had a positive impact upon the young people’s life’s. It has enabled our young people to access college independently and to be able to travel to school without the aid of their parents. This enabling intervention allows some of our most vulnerable students to access the same opportunities and our most able students. Please let me know if you need me to add anything else. Paul has greatly benefited from his experience supporting P as a travel buddy. This has also benefited P as he has been able to join a group that he would not otherwise have been able to attend. Paul has grown in confidence and has a real sense of work ethic through completing this. Thanks Steph From: C Rockliff Sent: 12 March 2014 10:21 To: Siddall Jill Subject: Re: Help Hi Jill, Independent travel and the various stages of training that work towards this, including Travelling Together, Get Going, Out and About summer school and road safety training, are extremely important areas of learning for the vast majority of students at Seven Hills. The ability to travel independently allows students to participate in areas of learning such as college and off-site work-related learning that would otherwise be very difficult for them to access. It also opens doors for their future education or working life and provides valuable life experiences in making decisions, self-organisation, social development and problem solving. We have consistently noted over the years that independent travel has also given a huge boost in confidence to our young people which has had a great impact on their progress in other curriculum areas as well as their general functioning and maturity. This has been echoed on many occasions by parents/carers who have commented on their children rapidly developing as individuals as a result of their new-found independence. I cannot over-state the importance of this strand of our students’ education and personal development, and as a school we are committed to keeping this as a key area of the provision we offer at Seven Hills.
