My Judo Success
My name is Victoria Mulgrave, I am part of Challenger, my form class is CLG. The
Youth Club is attached to Glengormley High School. It is on 4 nights a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. You can do lots of activities, football, Wii,
My name is Bethany Lewis. I am a member of Challenger. I’m in Mrs Kerr’s form
class, CLK. I started to have a love for judo at the age of 10. My uncle had been
doing judo from he was tiny. He is now the coach for Abbey Judo Club and he was
the one who talked me into starting the sport. After a few weeks of me starting
judo my dad decided he wanted to start too. Now my dad has progressed so much
he is now a coach with William Cully (my uncle). He wanted me and him to do
something together. I kept training until I got stronger and knew more techniques,
good enough so I could enter into competitions. I have competed in many
competitions. The picture you can see of me is me competing in one of the minor
competitions over here in Northern Ireland, at that competition I had three
fights and won all three and went home with a gorgeous gold medal. I have been to
many places over the world competing in massive competitions. Now I’m fighting
for Northern Ireland in the NI Squad. I wish to continue progressing what I’m
doing now.
Xbox, Pool, Ping-Pong, and lots more. You can also go to Glengormley Youth Club to
relax, there are sofa’s all around the Youth Club, and there is a TV room with a projected screen onto the front wall. We have a sleepover every year in the Youth
Club, they are called the ’12 hour stay awake’, there are a lot of activities, that go
on in the stay awakes, all the activities mentioned above and there are also activities like parachutes, Wii challenges, games of 2 touch and girls football. At 7 or 8
on the Saturday morning we have breakfast, tea or toast. The stay awakes are really great fun. I am a part of Challenger as I mentioned, and I was representing
them, I brought my friend with me, she is also a part of Challenger and was also
representing them. It was a fantastic experience even though I was very tired the
next day, I ate lots of sweets through the night, I also lay in the TV room and
watched movies for most of the night. It was good fun and I would do it all over
again.

lenger for the Sport Changes Life programme this was with a Portadown football player and a American basketball player . The teacher that organised it was
Pamela. Other people involved were 3rd, 4th,5th, and 6th year boys. My friend
Steven McDowell who is also a part of challenger took part with me, his form
class is CLG. I enjoyed everything about this. We played football and basketball
every week and we had to write what we what we wanted to do the week after.
We always picked football. At the end of it all we went bowling at the sports
has grown a lot from doing this programme I used to be afraid of meeting new
people but now I feel I have the confidence to make new friends wherever I go.
I also feel this will help me achieve better exam results
My first year in Glengormley High.
My name is Rebecca Brown and I am in year 8. I started Glengormley High in
2013. I am really enjoying High School because all the teachers are nice and
the pupils are all friendly. Some of my favourite subjects are Art, Science,
Performing Arts, Geography and History, I like these subjects because they
are very interesting. I have made lots of new friends throughout the year. I
took part in trips away and the open night which was really fun. For the open
night me and my friends did PE.

Me and my horse By
Sophie Galloway– CJC
I’ve always been interested in horses, ever since I could walk. The person who inspired me
to start horse riding would be my mum, I saw a picture of her galloping on the beach and I
would daydream for hours about it. When I was 7, my mum finally made my dream a reality.
I started going to weekly lessons at various different riding schools for 6 years plus riding
my friend’s horse every week for her. In January 2013, I got the amazing chance to loan
my friend’s horse, Skye. Skye was and still is my first horse. She is the best thing that’s
ever happened to me, she’s helped me through so much. I’ve been loaning Skye for nearly a
year and a half, but have been riding her for nearly 3 years. I ride and care for her 5 days
a week. Nothing beats galloping through a field. It has to be the best thing ever, over 8
years of horse riding, I have went to over 50 competitions and got over 40 rosettes. It’s
not ‘just a phase’ for me, it’s my life. Now like my mum I’ve had a chance to gallop on the
beach and hope to do it again.
My Hospital Experience
My first year in Glengormley High.
My name is Catherine Ferguson and I am in year 8. I started school in 2013 and I am
still enjoying it now. My favourite subjects are Art, Performing arts, History, H.E
and PE. All the teachers are nice and the pupils are really friendly. I have made lots
of new friends, I enjoyed helping out with the PE on the open night. I also enjoyed
raising charity funds for Mrs Kerr’s London marathon for breast cancer. I did a
sponsored silence to raise money for breast cancer. I took part in trips away too.
The difference in high school and primary school is great, there are bigger age
groups in form classes, you get to move about a lot more where as in primary school
you stayed in the one room for all lessons that we wouldn’t do in primary school like
science, TD, French, Performing Arts and mostly Geography that I love. There are
also more people to get to know and become friends with. The uniform is different
too, in primary school we wore a polo shirt and a jumper, now we wear a blazer.
My name is Sophie Kidd and the group I am in is CEC, today I want to share an experience
that affected me, friends and family and also school, I was feeling sick a couple of days
before we broke off for Easter.
During the Easter holidays things were starting to get worse, I became weaker, whiter
and really badly ill, it’s never nice to feel sick, is it?, whether it’s the cold, flu or a stomach bug. What I had was much worse. My mum figured that I might have a kidney infection as she looked up the symptoms online.
It was on a Tuesday night when my mum and dad had decided to take me to hospital. They
had to there was nothing else they could do, I hadn’t eaten for three days which was bad
but then I soon wasn’t able to keep water down. I became dehydrated. Nobody could help
me or make the pain go away.
My mum had helped me out of the car as I couldn’t even stand, she put my arm around her
neck and helped me walk in, I felt embarrassed at the way I looked and how sick I was.
People kept staring at me. My name got called out and I was brought into a room. I was
short of breath and my mouth was really dry. My head was pounding; I just wanted to
feel better.
I was sitting in Antrim Hospital in so much pain, waiting for a doctor. The doctor had soon
seen me and I was took to a side room and my blood was took and he put me on a drip. I
stayed in that side room for a week and could feel myself getting better but the pain and
sickness I experienced was terrible.
I soon got better but still remained weak; I missed out on getting all my coursework done.
I got back to school, completed all work and kept healthy.
I hope I never experience this again. My mum was correct I did have a kidney infection
after all.

My start to GCSE’s
World Book day
My name is Hannah spencer I am in CPM.
Thursday 6th March 2014
This time last year I was choosing my GCSE subjects. The subjects I chose where
Technology + design, Graphic Products and Performing arts. Subject teachers and
other pupils helped me with my decision, I went to an open night and there where
pupils there telling me about each individual subject, explaining how much coursework would be involved and how the exams are, I picked these subjects because I
enjoyed them from 1st to 3rd year and I thought I could do well and get a good
grade by the end of 5th year, I don’t regret any of the subjects I chose. I enjoy all
of them. There is a lot of coursework involved in all of the subjects that I chose
but I just work hard and get it all done.
In Mrs Thompson’s class Gillian Scott, Luka Valiukaite and Agne Rozminaite
dressed up for World Book Day. Gillian came first for her fantastic Robin
Hood costume and was awarded a voucher for the Abbeycentre.

Runs the London Marathon
Children In Need
CLK Interview with Mrs Kerr
On the 13th April our very own PE teacher Mrs Kerr completed the London Marathon in 4 hours and 49 minutes. In doing so she raised £6,500 for the charity ‘Against
Breast Cancer’. Now the dust has settled on her big race, members of her form class
chatted to her about the biggest challenge of her life so far.
What inspired you to run the London Marathon 2014?
I have always enjoyed running and have participated in many 10k runs. I watched the
London Marathon on TV last year and was crying my eyes out at all the inspirational
stories of people taking part. There were people undergoing treatment for cancer,
people with one leg, people on crutches and even a man running with a fridge on his
back! So I thought “if they can do it, so can I”. I wanted to do something for charity
that would make a difference to people’s lives. Being a PE teacher I also wanted to
become a role model for our pupils to hopefully inspire some of them someday to
undertake a similar challenge themselves.

Rebecca Brown
CMN
What was the hardest part?
The marathon itself wasn’t the hardest part, it was actually really enjoyable. The
hardest thing was fitting in all the training around school work and my own hockey
training. I started off only being able to run about 4 miles and over the course of six
months built up to 18 miles. I was literally running anytime I had any spare time, including 5.30am before school and 11.00pm in the evenings! I had to make sacrifices
with my social life and even ran to a restaurant one evening when I was going out for
dinner. At 18 miles I really hurt my knee and was unable to complete the last 5
weeks of my training programme as planned. This increased my nerves for the big
day but thankfully I was able to run the full 26.2 miles.
Why did you choose the charity ‘Against Breast Cancer’?
It’s a charity close to my heart as my mum was treated for breast cancer over 20
years ago. I in 8 women will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime and every
year 250 men in the UK will be diagnosed. That is 47,000 people in the UK a year!
It’s something that will impact all of us at some stage of our lives and ‘Against Breast
Cancer’ is seeking to find a vaccine that will lead to a future free from breast cancer.
How much money did you raise in total?
£6,500. The charity were absolutely overwhelmed as it’s the largest amount a single
person has ever raised for them. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of all the pupils, staff and parents at GHS. I was so proud of the way you all supported me and thank you all from the bottom of my heart. We had lots of sponsored silences, marathon cycles, bun sales, a tuck shop, bonus ball competition, raffles, a youth centre sleepover, a Parent’s and Friend’s association quiz, and many other brilliant fundraising events. Our school has a strong tradition of raising funds for
charity and we really excelled on this occasion.
What advice would you give anyone wanting to take up a similar challenge?
Never underestimate yourself and remember that you can achieve anything that you
put your mind to.
What’s your next challenge?
I’m going to keep up the running, but think I’ll stick to the 10ks and half marathons
for a while. I’ll pass the marathon baton over to another teacher; I hear Miss Dowds
might be keen!
I go twice a week during registration to meet Mrs Winters to read
books.
I am reading a book called Animal Ark. It helps me to be more confident
and I am not as shy in lessons.
ALTON TOWERS ICT TRIP
ECO Club
By Tyler Gray—CMN
I went on the ICT trip with the school to Alton Towers in April. The trip lasted 4 days, we
left on Thursday and came back on Monday. We were on the boat for 2 and a half hours
then was on the bus for 5 hours, every 2 hours on the bus we had to stop for a break.
The teachers that where there was Miss Livingstone, Miss Furphy¸ Mrs Melton and Mr
Donavan.
The day that we went to Alton towers it was really good. All the rides were good but I
thought the smiler was the best, Alton towers was a really big place but it was worth it to
walk around it all.
The next day we went to Cadbury world it was just a big chocolate factory/museum. The
museum part showed you how the chocolate was first invented. I thought Cadbury world
was really good because we learnt how to make chocolate and we were showed how it was
invented.
We went to the science museum for 2 hours. I thought the museum was alright because it
showed you how thing work and how they were made.
Over all I think the ICT trip was really good and I would love to go back again. By Amy

Sports Day
On the 4th of June 2014 Glengormley High hosted its annual sports day for years
8,9,10 and 11, this was my first sports day even though I am in year 10.
Basically what happens is you will pick your events in P.E and do them on sports day. I
chose Discus and shot put but you only get 3 choices, and on the day you will compete
for your PLG (Endurance, Challenger, Voyager, Discovery and Apollo this is your colour
on you tie I am in challenger (the best obviously) but we came third this year.
st
I think if I had of done sports day in years 8 and 9 I would have performed better so
definitely try sports day in year 8.
On the other hand sports day is quite fun because when you not competing or when you
have finished your events you can sit and talk to your friends or family and maybe buy
a burger out of the chippy van that comes every year.
Che Haddock. CJC
What is your job title?
‘Head of careers ‘
rd
Then when you’re competing you get a medal for yourself 1 , 2nd and 3 I didn’t get a
medal unfortunately I just didn’t perform, even though I practised and was the best
in P.E. at discus my nerves got to me because I really wanted to do well for my house.

My Hopes and Dreams
My name is Nicole Ellison, aged 15. I am a member of Challenger in

I started modelling a few year’s back. I have done a variety of catwalk show’s also photo shoot’s. I have done promotion for Akita Rescue NI, when doing modelling you meet new people and develop strong
relationships with them. Modelling can take place anywhere and anytime.
When modelling I get to wear a different variety of clothing to suit
the shoot and the theme. Its very fun getting to wear all different
cool clothes.
I would like my career in modelling to grow so I can be a full time
model. It’s the only job I would want to do!
My family are very proud of what I do and who I want to be. I would
like my modelling career to flourish as I would like to become well
known as a model
