Many others find their forever homes within a few weeks or a month or two. But there are some cats that for one reason or another remain at St. Francis for a year or longer, patiently waiting for their chance to have their own families again. These cats can be young or old, friendly or shy, and any size, sex or color. There is no single reason why some cats continue to be overlooked by adopters. Featured in this newsletter are 5 beautiful cats that have lived at St. Francis for a year or longer. They range in age from 3 years to 13 years old and have lived at St. Francis from 1 to 5 years. All of these cats have one thing in common: if given the chance, with love and patience, they would all make wonderful companions. They also have one more thing in common: they will live at St. Francis until the day comes that they find their forever homes--no matter how long it takes. Your donations help rescue hundreds of cats and kittens each year, plus have a positive impact on thousands of cats in our community. Read on to discover how your contributions affect the lives of so many cats. You helped Lilac become a guardian angel to the family that adopted her! Rescued from the side of the road where she was left in a carrier under the hot Florida sun, Lilac had no idea that she would quickly be transformed from somebody’s discarded trash into an adopter’s lifesaving treasure. Two weeks after she was adopted from St. Francis Animal Rescue, Lilac saved her new adopter’s life for the first time by alerting his wife that his oxygen machine had stopped working in the middle of the night. In the eight months that Lilac has lived with her new family, she has saved her person’s life on several more occasions. Lilac is truly an angel in cat’s clothing! Your generous donations help us provide abandoned and unwanted cats with new loving homes. Not every adopted cat will have the opportunity to save someone’s life like Lilac did, but every cat will fulfill its destiny of providing unconditional love to its new family. Your ongoing support is needed for us to continue our mission of saving innocent cats’ lives. Thank you for rescuing over 300 adoptable cats & kittens this year. Your contributions allowed us to find homes for over 300 cats and kittens this year. Without you, the medical costs alone would be insurmountable. Every cat that enters our shelter receives at least $300 worth of medical care prior to being adopted. They are all spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and leukemia tested in addition to being treated for any parasites and injuries or illnesses. We strive to ensure that our cats are in the best of health when they leave St. Francis with their new forever families. Patsy was a kitten suffering from severe dental disease. Without treatment, she would have suffered a lifetime of pain. Several hundred dollars of dental care were required before Patsy was healthy enough to be adopted. The funds to treat Patsy were donated specifically to her care by concerned supporters of St. Francis Animal Rescue. You allow St. Francis to be a refuge for unadoptable cats. Not all cats will be adopted to new families. St. Francis is a no-kill shelter, and we currently care for 100 permanent resident cats. These cats have medical, physical or behavioral limitations that prevent them from acclimating to a family home. St. Francis is their home, and we provide them with everything they need including high quality food and the best veterinarian care available. Our cats are allowed to live out their lives for as long as they are able to enjoy life. This degree of care comes at a steep price—especially as our cats become seniors and succumb to many of the infirmities of old age (St. Francis pays over $65,000 in yearly veterinary expenses). Your donations give these cats the best quality of life possible. Brody arrived at our shelter in 1997 and, at 17 years old, is the oldest permanent resident here at St. Francis. He is a beloved member of our St. Francis family and serves as a testament to the high quality of care we give our cats. Brody may not have a couch or a fireplace to curl up near, but he has a place to call home and our St. Francis family loves him dearly. You help prevent the births of thousands of unwanted kittens. Because of your support, we have been able to spay and neuter over 1500 cats this year! In addition to providing spay and neuter services for cats that are brought to our shelter, we are now partners with a veterinarian who has organized a team of dedicated volunteers to provide a free spay and neuter clinic one morning every month for feral and stray cats in our community. Over 100 cats are spayed/ neutered during each monthly clinic! Thank you for helping hundreds of cats stay out of shelters. Your donations have allowed us to offer cat food free of charge to families who are suffering from economic hardship. Without this assistance, many more cats would either be surrendered to shelters or released outside to fend for themselves. We are also able to offer cat food to caregivers of feral cat colonies. These selfless people help keep these community cats healthy and fed—often at their own expense. We are proud of what we have accomplished with your generous donations to St. Francis Animal Rescue. Please send the largest contribution you can. Your investment will help continue to fulfill our mission of rescuing abandoned cats. Together we can answer the call of cats in need. The cats of St. Francis Animal Rescue and the cats in our community need your support. Please send your gift today. Long-Term Adoptables These beautiful kitties have been patiently waiting for their chances to have families of their very own. Some of them are older and some are shy but all of them would make wonderful companions if given the chance. I have my own library hidden from the humans. At night, I read to our unschooled plebeian masses of felines. I also write, and here’s my latest treatise: Fleas, what good are they? They are living creatures so they must have been put upon this earth for some good reason, but we cats can’t figure it out. We put up with them, though, because it’s the way it’s always been. That is, until we came to good old St. Francis where fleas are not tolerated. There comes a day every month or so when we are descended upon to rid us of this scourge. Our ears perk up when we see several volunteers congregating in our area with vials in hand. The silent meow quickly alerts countless felines that we are about to be tampered with, something most of us on the permanent resident side avoid at all costs since some of us are feral or don’t like to be held. Don’t touch us unless we allow it! That is our rule. Off we go, hissing, growling and running fast and furious to avoid this entourage of well-meaning but scary humans bent on squeezing liquid on the backs of our necks and then putting a dot of white-out on one of our ears to show that we have been violated beyond belief. I tell you, it takes a good week before some of us will have anything to do with humans again. It’s just a good thing that we cannot anticipate this invasion before it happens. At least we are only freaked out for one day. But then, something good happens. We quit scratching. Ah, the enjoyment of not having to stop what we are doing (which is usually sleeping or eating) to try to bite that flea in half. I’m telling you, we can get in some really strange positions trying to obliterate these little invaders of our peace. Grooming once again becomes pleasurable instead of a chore, and we can sleep countless hours without jumping up to hunt down those biting little parasites. So, in weighing the pluses and minuses of enduring one day of “the dreaded vial,” or putting up with those nasty little mites, we all have to admit that even though we fight it (as any selfrespecting cat would do), we become a relaxed shelter of cats for several weeks, until these little wingless, leaping annoyances reappear. With all the scientific breakthroughs these humans claim to have found, why can’t fleas be annihilated for good? Note: Freckles is up for in-house adoption at St. Francis. He has an intellectual overview of activities on the permanent resident side of the shelter. Although he never interacts with humans, believing them to be inferior to his great brain power, he would like to have a parent of his own to write to. If you would like to adopt Freckles, or even a less erudite cat, see the In-House Adoption sheet in the newsletter. You will get three letters a year and a holiday card with a picture from your cat. Abalone Abalone is the sweetest 4 year old brown and white tabby that you will ever meet. Her only wish for the New Year is to find someone to love and give her a home. Abalone has severe food allergies which limit her ability to be around other animals where she would have access to their food. Sadly, since St. Francis is a cageless shelter, Abalone is forced to spend most of her day in a room by herself. Abalone thrives on attention and is terribly lonely in her current living situation. If you are looking for a kitty to share your heart and home, and you have no other cats or dogs, please consider visiting Abalone. You are sure to fall in love and you won’t want to leave the shelter without her! Foster Homes Needed for our Adult Cats If you aren’t ready for the challenge of fostering young kittens, but have love in your heart and room in your house to spare, consider fostering an adult cat. When cats come into our shelter, they are Sandi extremely stressed. Most of them adapt to their new living situation, but some of them have a more difficult time. Their stressed behavior at the shelter does not necessarily show their true temperaments. We would love to give these cats short vacations in foster homes so that we can learn how they might behave in home settings. Knowing their true personalities would help us assure potential adopters that cats who might not seem too friendly at the shelter would be loving pets after they left and were once again in home environments. We also have adult cats with special needs that would do so much better in a home with extra care and attention. Love and patience is all that is required from you; we will supply the cat and everything required for its care. Sandi and Baby Girl are just two of the adult cats with special needs who l are looking for foster ir Baby G homes. Please call the shelter at 492-6200 if you want to be part of our Homeward Bound team. Help us ensure that all of our adoptable cats have good chances for new, loving homes! St. Francis Remembers the Late Ed Lyman I had the pleasure of getting to know Ed Lyman as a result of his involvement with St. Francis. Ed was a man small in stature but a giant with all he accomplished in his 100 years. He gave repeatedly of himself to both people and animals. His affiliation with St. Francis began several years ago when his daughter, Jane, volunteered at the shelter. Ed would come with her to visit the kitties. After Jane died Ed moved from Sarasota to Venice. He asked St. Francis if we could use a “few things” that didn't fit in his new apartment to sell at our Thrift Store. His “few things” filled up an entire unit across the hall! While we sorted and packed Ed’s donations, he shared stories of his life. He was a great story teller and full of jokes. A few months later Ed came to the shelter in search of a companion to ease his loneliness. He left with a beautiful brown tabby named Kelly, and he promised to find someone to care for her if anything happened to him. Ed called me often to tell me that Kelly was the best cat he had ever had, and he often stopped by the shelter with donations for the other cats. Shortly before Ed died, he gave St. Francis a large deluxe van painted with pictures of cute kitties and the St. Francis logo. I'm sure he was remembering those many trips we made to the Thrift Store with his donations several years earlier. Ed kept his promise to find a new owner for Kelly if anything should happen to him…but his replacement had passed away before him! Needless to say I took Kelly to my home and instantly fell in love with this sweet, loving cat. It wasn't until attending Ed's memorial service that I learned of the many amazing things this humble, charitable and loving man had accomplished--his illustrious war time service in the US Army, his involvement with the Nuremberg Trials, and his service with the U.S. Veteran's Administration to name just a few. His list of accomplishments was impressive and equaled the deeds of two or three men combined. Ed’s dedication to his fellow man continued to the day he died. He was still very active volunteering at the Venice hospital, the All Faiths Food bank, and he was an avid writer and member of a local writers club. After Ed's memorial service one of his friends approached me and asked if she could have Kelly. After talking to her I was convinced she would offer Kelly the perfect home. As much as I loved Kelly, I'm getting up in years and have enough SFAR special kitties to keep me company. So with tears in my eyes I said goodbye to this precious cat. She will always hold a special spot in my heart as will the memories of Ed Lyman. So when you see our van around Venice, let it remind you not only of us but of the great man who cared and helped make our community a better place to live. Bertie Erickson Adoption Coordinator Search “St. Francis Animal Rescue” Dear Cordelia... My people mentioned that they will be taking me to the VET for an annual check-up. Should I put up a giant fuss and hide under the middle of the king sized bed or just go along with the plan? Love, Li’l Houdini Dear Li’l Houdini, Although it would be tremendously amusing to watch your people crawl around on the floor as you race from one side of the bed to the other, it would be wisest for you to go along with their plans. If you want to remain in tip top shape, like me, you should get an annual checkup. The vet is better trained than your people to discover any problems. My friend Jupiter, who is only four years old, went to the vet and discovered that he has hip dysplasia. He now receives daily medicine mixed into his canned food. If he hadn’t gone to the vet, he would have soon been in terrible pain. Plus good old Jupiter, who used to eat just boring dry kibble, now gets his choice of yummy canned food every night. He is very pleased. If you are a young adult, the vet will probably just examine you. It is very acceptable to hiss at N.J. N.J. is a playful, older Hemingway kitten looking for a home of her very own. N.J. has a neurological condition called cerebellar hypoplasia which most closely resembles cerebral palsy in children. Her movements are a little jerky, and she has some balance issues and often wobbles when she walks. N.J.’s condition will not worsen and she will have a normal lifespan. N.J. needs someone who will look past her awkward movements and love this spunky, adorable kitten with her big front feet and even bigger heart. Stop by St. Francis and let this little girl melt her way into your heart and home. Cordelia appropriate times, like when they take your temperature, but try very hard not to bite or scratch. Most vets are nice people and only want to help you stay healthy. If you are an older cat the vet will most likely want to draw some blood. Drawing blood is not like drawing a picture with a crayon; it hurts a bit but must be done. Try to be brave. The vet will tell your people how well you behaved, and with luck your people will take notice of your great courage and give you extra treats and attention when you get home. So, Li’l Houdini, enjoy the under the bed antics but then let your people take you to the vet. It is best for you. Thank you for all your hard work! Thank you to Ark Animal Hospital, especially Dr. Chetica Maus, DVM, for donating their unused medications to St. Francis. We truly appreciate the kindness and generosity! Ark Animal Hospital is located at 2000 South Tamiami Trail in Venice. The cats were so excited when they received a surprise Christmas gift (actually 2 gifts) from a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous. The gifts - two 32” flat screen televisions with DVD players!! Along with the TVs came great videos of creatures and critters for the cats to watch. Many of the cats have really enjoyed watching the shows, and a few are now officially couch potatoes! Stop by sometime during adoption hours to see just how much the cats love these generous gifts! VENICE CHRISTMAS PARADE On Saturday, December 1st, 2012, SFAR participated in Venice's Annual Downtown Christmas parade. This year we decorated our new van that was donated by the late Ed Lyman. We were thrilled with all of the approving cheers that we received from the spectators as we moved through the parade. What a great way to start the holiday season! Message From Our Shelter Manager I would like to thank everybody for welcoming me into the St. Francis family. This is a very exciting transition for me, enabling me to pursue my love of animals. For most of my adult life I have worked in the non-profit field and volunteered for various organizations - YMCA, New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue, ARPH (Aussie Rescue and Placement Helpline), Manatee County Humane Society, and I am an active leader and volunteer coordinator for the Florida 4H Dog Project. St. Francis has become an important part in my family’s lives, and we all embrace it fully. I have many ideas that I am working to bring to fruition with the assistance of the Board of Directors and those who have been dedicated to St. Francis for many years. Thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers. Each and every person who touches St. Francis is a valuable asset to the shelter and our kitties: from the counselors who help find them homes, to the friends who clean up after them, the trappers and feeders who help the feral and community cats and the socializers who help them all feel loved. With the assistance of our volunteers, we can all find St. Francis kitties their new ‘fur’ever homes and ensure cats in our community do not go hungry. For those looking for a way to help, we are always in need of dedicated adoption counselors for the shelter and staff for the thrift store. If you don’t have much time to spare, our community food bank is always in need of replenishing. The food bank helps to feed cats in our community and enables families in financial need to feed their cats and keep them in their homes while they work hard to recover from economic crisis. Sincerely, Jan Chapman Shelter Manager IN-HOUSE ADOPTION FORM There are about 150 resident cats who will never be adopted into a home, but would love to have someone to call their own.
